Lost in Minecraft

So I was searching for wood one fine day in Minecraft when night fell, and I found myself overrun by skeletons and spiders. In my panic, I ended up running really far away from what was already a new area for me. Added to the fact that it was nighttime and raining, you can imagine that I got quite lost. Well, I don't want to be lost, and my home just so happens to be a very tall lighthouse on the beach, so does anyone know how I can find my way back to it?

Start a temporary dwelling, and make an iron pickaxe. Find redstone, I think you'll need 4 or 5, and make a compass. Though it may take a while, that will lead you back to spawn one way or another.

Good idea. I brought along my diamond pickaxe (that's why I can't just die), so I'll use that. I didn't really know what compasses did until now.

You can't. But if you get lost again, you can use F3 to show you your coordinates. Your spawn is directly above the origin.
