Lost in Minecraft

I've been playing MineCraft Alpha for a while now. There are only two creations I vividly recall, first being a MASSIVE Atlantis we (me and my pals) built before water flow was updated. Nothin' but glass, it was quite a sight. Then we realized we forgot torches and had to fight to get Atlantis back.

Second is our current server, we built quite a decent sized town over several natural rivers. After some thought, we extended the rivers and the town, and during that found a cave. We entered, and the thing was so insanely large that it took three solid days of exploring to empty it of as many minerals as we could reach. We didn't want to build chests for it all, so I built a MASSIVE vault underneath the town with a secret entrance only two servergoers know of.

Over 150 Iron blocks (crafted with 9 ingots) reside in said vault. About 70 Diamond blocks (9 diamonds) are also in deeper.

Needless to say, I got far more than just $15 of fun out of this game.

And a waterfall-tree.

It was an awesome base.
I got lost exploring and so ruined it all.

I am curious, but this is the only thing that has truly impressed me. An entire planet which can be viewed from offworld, and it can even be entered. It's hollow so the inside is more fun than the outside. Pretty inspiration video.

what's the difference between the free and paid versions?

Free version aka Creative Mode you have an unlimited amount of a dozen different types of block and the world in front of you. You can build anything but that's it.

In Alpha aka Survival Mode you start with nothing and you only get blocks by mining them, which you can craft tools for. Oh and there's monsters. I suggest looking at one of the gazillion YouTube videos on How To Survive Your First Night. I only explained the most basic difference.

But I have the free versions and I start with nothing and have to mine things, kill monsters etc.
I don't have the infinite block mode though.

Minecraft is spreading through out the world like wild fire and with good reason, I myself have never been more addicted to a game.

I can't wait for the Halloween update, I recently broke through a wall with lava behind so I lost all of the iron (first deposit I had found this world) I had on me. Kinda taking a break lol.

Don't quite get all the popularity it's getting.
I played the free version, killed some time, kind of fun. But it's not the best 'Do whatever you want game' I've seen.

That's because you played the free version.

Creative is just building stuff.
But survival is survival! You have health, there are enemies, you have to craft your weapons and tools, you have to dig for you minerals, you have to survive! The survival mode blows creative mode out of the water. Creative gets boring after a bit, survival hasn't even come close to getting boring. It's awesome.

Well compare that to Garrysmod. There's a shit ton more than just creative/freebuild.
There's a damn good survival in that game too. You have to survive as well. You also have to craft weapons, build structures, you can join other players tribes, war against each other, fight enemies. Anything. It's awesome too.

And then there's all the other game types as well. Trouble in Terrorist Town, Hide and Seek, Pirate battles, Fort Wars, build-a-ship, roleplay, and a shit ton more.

I'm not saying Minecraft isn't awesome. But for $5 less, you can get so much more of that type of content, better graphics, more in-depth, just a better playing experience in general.
Which is why I just don't get all the popularity.

Because it's simple.
It's like Lego, really.

I don't have to rotate anything in 3D, or try and fit things together. I just build it. Plus the game-world is random (As opposed to a set, limited map) and massive every time. As in, to scale, 8 times the size of earth. Then add in the exploration and discovery, as well as the crafting system.

They aren't the same game, so you can't say one is a better experience.
It's a completely different experience.
