My question to you, my fellow escapists, is what method do you use to find lost things when you don't need to rush??? Do you use the age-old frantic search or do you look methodically and in a calm state of mind or some other way to coordinate (or otherwise) your search?

I tend to start with a frantic search, and, lacking success then, I sit down and think about all the possible places it could be and go from most likely place and work my way down my list until I find it.

EDIT: Any tips which seem overly successful to you (for all those who are still looking for their long lost games/dvds/pictures/whatever)?

I do the opposite. I calmly search all the places that it could possibly be, retrace my steps and try to remember where I left it. If I still can't find it, then I start to panic. I get pretty annoyed at myself when I lose things.

uhmm, poke about a bit, shrug, forget about it, find it a year later, and wonder why the frick i needed it in the first place. I'm not the most organized bloke about, as you can probably tell.

EDIT: of course thats when i don't need to find something in a hurry, then its like WWIII with my random carp going everywhere.

I'll run around frantically and go "shitshitshitshitshitshit" but then eventually I'll calm down and keep looking, but this time in a more methodical manner.

I go nuts and look through every possible place, throwing stuff everywhere. I'm extremely neurotic.

This, usually followed by swearing at or hitting myself for forgetting where I left it in the first place.

I start looking for it methodically, most likely place first, and slowly working down the list, searching in less and less likely places.

I tend to look where it is most likely to be, then places it could be but probably isn't. If that fails, I get a little angry and quit in a huff. I then generally find it a couple of weeks down the line when I'm looking for something else, which is always annoying.

It seems a lot of people on the escapist are quite logical and methodical. It surprises me that so many people (surprises in a good way) are obviously so logical when in almost any discussion thread people expect everyone else to explode in a shitstorm of pure flame-war, with *raising flame shield* being in at least seven of the first page of posts. (Thank you guys and girls, my faith in humanity has been partially restored and it is all thanks to you people *thumbs up*)

I try and go for the methodical approach, but more often than not, this is how it works out:

# Step 1: Frantically search for about 10 minutes, failing to find the object that I'm looking for.

# Step 2: Sit down for a minute and think of all the places it could possibly be.

# Step 3: Begin methodical systematic sweep of possible locations the object could be. STILL don't find it.

# Step 4: Give up and sit down, exasperated.

# Step 5: Immediately spot whatever it was I was looking for, often in an incredibly obvious place.

# Step 6: Swear.

# Step 7: Forget what it was I wanted the object for in the first place.

# Step 8: See step 6.

This. I absolutely hate when I can't find something. If I'm in a situation where I need something, I will search for it, first camly, rationally... and then I'll go frantic, as the rage is boiling in me. It doesn't matter if I don't actually need it, but at the moment I realize there's something I can't find, I must find it, and it'll annoy me for the rest of the day if I can't.

I have 3 cats who like to go into cupboards, drawers, and bags whenever they get bored. They all like metal so they will carry off my keys and jewelry. I lose stuff all the time, but thankfully it is usually just under furniture. Looking under the couch or computer desk is almost always an instant win.

I just start looking for something else. Then I find what was originally missing. I have to trick the object into letting its guard down.
