Love/hate games

Well, I'd say I have a love/hate relationship with basically anything made by Obsidian or Bethesda, although not in the manner you describe.

Obsidian's writing is pretty darn good, way above average for video games. They could potentially produce something truly great. Sadly, their games are always broken in basically every other way. In order to get to that chewy centre you have to gnaw through incomplete content, lacklustre gameplay, woeful presentation and legions of nigh game-breaking bugs.

As for Bethesda games... so very interesting and engaging for the first ten or so hours. So mind-numbingly dull and repetitive for the rest. At some point I inevitably ask myself why I'm still playing, come up empty and promptly lose interest.

I don't think I have any love/hate relationships with games due to anything relating to difficulty.

Usually it's something like enjoying the story but hating the gameplay (like Alpha Protocol), or liking the gameplay but hating the story (like pretty much anything with Tom Clancy's name on it).

The Uncharted 3 multiplayers.

Barrels of fun but it's one of the few online games that make me RAGE.

Fucking buggy treasure sets... been getting the same damned treasures over and over again since I started playing... haven't unlocked shit!

The whole entire time I'm thinking Alpha Protocol. I've heard It has a great story, but is basically near broken.

As for my choice, I'd have to say the Fable series. As much as I knew Peter M. couldn't live up to his hype, I still bought the games. Not really because of what was promised, but pretty much because I liked the first one.

God of War 3. I love that it's God of War 3. I hate Kratos. The guy is, for 99% of the game, an unrepentant dickwad.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I love everything about it. I hate that it makes me age very quickly by scaring the ever-loving crap out of me.

Batman: Vengeance. The art style is 100% faithful to the 90's animated series, and brings in many of the voices I grew up with. Keith friggin' David and Mark Hamil, particularly. On the other hand, the game itself is a great fetid pile of crap.

Professor Layton series. I love everything about it. On the other hand, every so often, the game throws insane moon logic puzzles at me. You know, the kind of brain-bender that forces you to look up a walkthrough, and when you do, your only response is, "How in the nine hells was I supposed to guess that?!"

Pokemon. I am fully aways it's the same game over and over (up, down, left and right to move and you still set out to become the champion etc) but yet I like trying out the new Pokemons and making a new team etc.

I came into this thread to say the exact same thing. Well, almost the same thing anyway. The difference is that I know Obsidian sucks in actual game development, so I read up on how to avoid most bugs and glitches in their game, so I can concentrate on their writing.

For example, I heard Alpha Protocol's gameplay is practically broken. I read that the best way to play the game is with stealth and pistols, so I focused on those and I barely came across any glitches or boss annoyances at all (due to the bosses dying within seconds).

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3... Or any fighting games in general for that matter.

Just because you can be having a generally bad session with people beating you with shit you should be able to easily counter. Nothing is more enraging when you're losing to this guy who's just doing Charging Star into Hyper Charging Star over and over again with Captain America. That move is unsafe as fuck! How am i losing to that shit!?

On the other hand you can be having a blast making epic comebacks and just flaunting dat team *synergy (Phoenix Wright, X-23, Vergil FTW)

To its credit the game is incredibly well balanced with the entire roster being viable without being anyone being overpowered. With the exception of He Who Must Not Be Named. You know who i'm talking about.

YOU MEAN NOTHING TO ME!

[sub]*Note that, in actuality, this team may have little to no synergy.[/sub]

Sounds about right, and the same goes for me. I thought I would be okay when I played Amnesia: Justine, and I was totally totally wrong. Can't play either without flipping out like a small child.

The street fighter series... and Pokémon.

Pokémon nuzlockes give me a new level of stress though.

I have to agree with this . Out of curiosity how did you end up with this team , i see no team synergy. Also funny thing i noticed , if you ask anyone on the escapist who they play, 9 times out of 10 x-23 comes up ( including me x-23, doom , storm/morrigan).

To add my own love/hate game , MGS 2-4,i love everything about it when i get tu actually play the game , and hate the rest . This is a case where gameplay carries the game .

The CoD series is really good at making me look like a maniac. It can be fun to play some fast-paced multiplayer but eventually this will reduce me to an incoherent ranting mess through applications of horribad spawning, killstreak slaughters and awful teams.

Basically, PW was the reason I bought the game in the first place so he's always headlining the team. I'm good with X-23 and Vergil is cool (his Assist Me video convinced me to drop Ammy for him)

In the end i'm decent at each of these characters so they're on the team. I want to switch X to Trish but damn she's hard to learn... That fully invincible hyper would be sorely missed.

Plus X-23's Rage Trigger DHCs well into PW's Maya charge hyper. Leads to an easy Objection. Especially since 9/10 times the combo will end up in the corner so there is no way you could miss the Objection. That's basically it for synergy though. Unless you count Vergil's Rapid Slash assist being able to carry the enemy to the opposite side of the screen even if they're blocking... That is so good for PW's runaway

I'm terrified of using assists so yeah that's probably why the lack of synergy doesn't really affect me that much. Anyway PW has Maya! She's technically a second assist that's invincible. That's a win!

I'd probably have an easier time if i wanted to use proper villains. I point blank refuse to use proper villains with Phoenix Wright. Though maybe Vergil counts as a villain but i've never played DMC3... I'll pick up the HD collection when it comes out (lots of remakes these days huh)

I really like Dante vs Vergil battles. Just throwing it out there. Me and this one guy were having an epic last character bro vs bro duel. He won cuz I missed my Stinger towards the end (that move is crazy unsafe, need to stop opening combos with it) We even had an epic double Devil Trigger moment!

One of those rare games where you really don't care who wins because the match itself was so fucking awesome.

Any JRPG. I'll love the first half of them, and then I'll get to the point where I have to start grinding and that makes me hate them.
