A Hermit's Cave
So, we've all been there before and I'm sure a lot of you are there right now.

That hobby/game/thing you do, you simultaneously love it and hate it.

With me, it's a tabletop game system I picked up relatively recently, but good grief, most of my friends who play it have the same love/hate relationship with it. It's Privateer Press's WarMachine (or WarmaHordes if you include WM's 'feral cousin'). It's an awesome game, with a concise rules set, challenging gameplay and a very fun ethic. But for the life of me, it can be so infuriating since, in virtually every game, victory/defeat comes down to a matter of millimetres, a single dice roll, a single well/mis-placed move.

However, my friends have expressed the following sentiments:

'Riot', upon finishing a game, whether on the winning side or losing side, will, without fail, declare "Fucking stupid game! ... fucking STUPID game!" and laugh genially while holding his face and wearing an exhausted expression.

'LittleL', after giggling about exploiting line of sight and base/cover gaps will admit "yeah, this is a game for dickheads!"

'mac', also upon finishing a game, whether on the winning side or losing side, will, without fail, declare to whoever is in earshot "guys... don't play this game, it'll kill you!" and then shake his head with regret once he realises that everyone around him plays the game.

And me, once again upon finishing a game, whether on the winning side or losing side, will, without fail, declare "This game is really not good for my health!" slumped back in my chair and staring to the heavens.

How's about you guys?(!)

I just posted something similar in another thread, but Fallout: New Vegas is this for me. I love the game for what it is, I love the setting, the characters, most of the storylines, the gameplay and statbuilding, all of it.

Except glitches. And crashes. They happen all the time. A quest can get permanently glitched and become incompleteable because you happened to explore a building before starting a quest, the game will crash at the worst times and sometimes the autosaves won't work, so if you don't constantly save you will lose hours of progress. It gets so frustrating, but I keep coming back to it.

Quoted for Truth. Fallout 3 bugs were funny, but not gamebreaking, but new vegas crashes more than I'd like.

OT: Eternal Sonata. It was my first Xbox 360 game (Bioshock & the Orange box were technically my dad's). The family Xbox's front plate is an eternal sonata plate. I played about 20 something hours in.

Even as a 14-year-old, I knew the acting was terrible. But coming back to it this summer 7 years later? Oh god this game is bad. The dialogue should sign up for the meat boxing championships given how ham-handed it is. The story's a mess, with too many characters taking the mantle of main character, so that nothing really gets the focus it deserves. The Frederic Chopin biography sequences come out of nowhere and grind the game to a halt. The combat seems interesting, but it's so repetitive and super easy once you figure out the good strategy. It's really pretty and the music is great, but it's a great amount of wasted potential. Son, I am disappoint.

And yet, I can't stop playing it. Oh god.

League of Legends. On the one hand it can be REALLY fun to play and extremely satisfying to win. On the other losing is a real pain in the ass, because usually the game gets decided very early on and the rest of the game is just you suffering through it.

Probably Monopoly. I swear, some days I just want to burn the living room to the ground. The banker's a cheating arsehole (except when he's me) and there are never enough hotels or notes in one game...and we're not allowed to punch one-another, because we're family.

...But when it goes your way, it really goes your way.

I'd say Bloodbowl(the vidya game)...?

It's pretty absorbing, but the randomness of the whole affair can quickly turn a relaxing afternoon session into a practice of masochism.

Vindictus:

Love the game-play, most boss fights, classes and generally the 'game' it self ...

But I HATE what Nexon and Devcat (the dev team) are doing to it as the removed a mechanic that's been in the game since launch and and entire chunk of the game for bullshit reasons, the events are all thinly veiled tricks to get more money from the players and I don't really like the community that much to be honest, partly because they're jerks, but mostly cause they just roll over and take all the abuse Nexon throws at them.

Aww man, I LOVE Warmachine! Sadly, since I split up with my ex last year and therefore lost contact with him and most of his friends, my beloved Cryx aren't getting any love at the moment :(

[small]Sorry for gushing, it's just I don't see many other Warmachine players around.[/small]

OT: I had this with Alice: Madness Returns. On the one hand, it's gorgeous. Not going to lie, its prettiness was basically the only reason I wanted to play it, so I can forgive less than perfect gameplay etc. Just jaw-droppingly, grin-inducingly nice looking, creative visuals.

On the other hand, I was playing the PC port (I don't have a console), and it was, to quote Yahtzee, bugged up the arse. Not just minor/funny bugs, properly infuriating, bordering on game breaking bugs. Like crucial platforms failing to spawn towards the end of fiddly, time-limited sections, invisible walls randomly appearing in front of places you needed to jump to, your "shield" umbrella sometimes just not opening...

Despite all that though, I did beat the game and would still count it as one of my favourites. Guess that makes me either shallow or a masochist. Or possibly a shallow masochist.

Certain card games...

Oh yes. You're not a true friend of mine unless you've played a game of Mao with me. Or Blackout. Playing cards is both a blessing and a curse but by the end of it all you realize 3 hours with a treasured friend were just spent. NO REGRETS

Dark Souls 2.

Goddamn it B team, you did it ok... you added a guard break, great peer to peer connection, your armors have sexy as f*** cloth physics!, a vast array of viable weapons, dual wielding is sick, and Darklurker made me hard.

But why... whyyyyyyyy does EVERYTHING ELSE SUCK?! Your hitboxes suck, most of your bosses suck, your world design sucks, your level design is average, your story sucks, your lore sucks, you rely too much on Dks1's lore, you treat Solaire like a meme instead of a legend, your NPCs lack depth, your pvp is broken, you straight up hate invaders, your scaling is broken, you gave heavy armor TOO MUCH defense, you balance crap then end up breaking more than you fix, your DLC looks dull, your final boss sucked..... again, you actually used artificial difficulty in a game renowned for NOT relying on artificial difficulty... and your torch is useless.
Also shockwaves. F*** shockwaves.

WHY AM I STILL PLAYING YOUR SH*T GAME?! Miyazaki please save us all! /;O;/

The Max Payne 3 multiplayer... on the one hand I love that you can level up by doing pretty much anything from looting a corpse to simply performing a roll or cashing in the adrenaline the game throws at you every time you die. So even if you get fried it's never a complete waste of time. Some of the most fun matches I've had involved me lurking around scavenging off the corpses I hadn't even shot myself and working on those grinds. On the other hand I hate there's no good filtering system that sets aside legendary over-leveled avatars that have been recycled half a dozen times already from newbs that started playing like 5 minutes ago (at least on deathmatch). To date there hasn't been a single player I couldn't kill, even if it was 50 times more powerful than my lvl 3 loadout. But the kill/death ratio is preposterous.

Bioshock Infinite. Enjoyed the story, loved the atmosphere, found all the characters interesting... but the gameplay was balls. Broken health system, bland gunplay, samey vigors, etc. I felt like I was trudging through the shooty bits to get to the plot, rather than being engaged in both.

*sighs* I hate to say this... I mean REALLY hate to say this... But...

Persona 4 Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days... Just in general...

First, the DS version had a LOT of repetitive missions/objectives that ranged from "so easy I can't believe this is even a mission this late in the game" to "fuck is this taking FOREVER just to complete... and my DS needs to be recharged..." to "FUCK YOU AND YOUR CHALLENGE SIGILS"... But, damn do I still love the overall gameplay of the DS version...

Second, the 1.5 cinematic movie/cutscene version, despite basically weaving through most of the pointless moments from the DS version, THEY DIDN'T EVEN TURN MOST OF THE MAJOR BATTLE MOMENTS FROM THE GAME INTO ACTUAL HD CUTSCENES!! For fuck's sake, that one moment[footnote]Granted, there were basically more than one... But, the one I vaguely talking about was one of the worse offenders for me...[/footnote] in the DS version that was actually moving because of the battle that happens beforehand basically looses that "moving moment" because it just goes from the cutscene before the battle to the cutscene after the battle... I mean, it actually made me go back and play that particular sequence on the DS again just to remind myself that Squeenix could have turned that battle into an awesome-looking cutscene like that one cutscene in Kingdom Hearts 2 after you defeat Sephiroth...

*sighs* I mean, 358/2 Days, to me, is one of those games where both versions have too many positives/negatives to say one's better than the other (outside of maybe Chain of Memories and, especially, Coded at this moment), but I still like the game overall... If the cinematic movie/cutscene just had those battle moments in the cutscenes, then I wouldn't feel as conflicted as I do at this point...

Awesome! A fellow WarMachine player! How many times you been caught out by a charge run short or reducing a caster to 5- damage before it whacked you back?! (Yeah, last game, reduced Sorscha to one damage before losing... ended up pounding the table in mock despair. Have been raging with the line 'one bloody damage' for the last three days!)

There's only one other WarMachine player I've encountered here, but I can't play him, he's on the wrong side of the world!

Anyway, you got a favourite caster? I was originally drawn to Cryx because theirs was the first faction book I perused. And, bizarrely, I liked the look of the Master Necrotech Mortenebra... =_= But the bone-chickens... eh...! =P

However, I decided to listen to my heart (pfft!) and I play Retribution... and troll all the Hordes players with Kaelyssa and her Focus/Fury nicking goodness!! It seems to be a theme with me (WH40K: Eldar... WHF: Dark Elves... WM: Retribution (i.e. Elves))! >_>

Still, I'm surprised you can't get regular games in, both clubs and both shops I frequent have rather large followings for WarmaHordes, much more so than any GW products. *shrug* Then again... London, so... :/

Haha, all the fucking time on both counts, though I have got better at judging my charges. I kind of like how quickly things can turn around though (so long as my opponent's not a dick about it, of course). Sounds weird, but it kind of reminds me of close, fast-moving sports like tennis or fencing :p

I'm pretty sure you're the first I've met. We seem to be a rare breed.

Anyway, you got a favourite caster?
I started out with Deneghra, then moved on to Iron Lich Asphyxious, but Lich Lord Asphyxious (the Epic Warcaster) is my homeboy, and not just because I love the miniature (though that definitely helps...):

I've had a lot of luck teaming him up with my Cankerworm - as well as being generally awesome and possibly my favourite unit in the game, it has Affinity Asphyxious, meaning it can make a full advance if it ends a turn within Gaspy's control range. That little guy covers a huge amount of ground in my games :D

Elves))! >_>
I don't have much experience with Retribution, but they do seem cool from what I've seen. I think most people have a "theme" - for me it seems to be the unapologetically evil factions (Dark Eldar are far and away my favourite 40k army). It's odd, because I always play sickeningly good guys in video games.

Still, I'm surprised you can't get regular games in, both clubs and both shops I frequent have rather large followings for WarmaHordes, much more so than any GW products. *shrug* Then again... London, so... :/
Yeah, the scene around me's always been very GW heavy. It was my ex who got me and a bunch of his friends into Warmachine, and I wasn't really aware of many others in the area. Plus, where I am at the moment (rural Somerset), there are no clubs or shops at all :( Still, it's been really nice just to think about it in detail again typing all this out, so cheers for that!

Pokemon.

Why do I keep playing it, why???

The thing that especially irks me is that it's basically impossible for me to catch them all. Not good for my OCD.

Uh...like/hate?

This very forum and indeed any enthusiast-circle discussion about vidyagaems.

I can understand passion, but it's almost like where civility goes to die. And people talk in this grating 'Hello, sir, good morrow!' sub D & D sunday club vernacular that makes me want to eat my own eyes.

Most people claim to be cynics. But I'm cynical of cynics. You claim to be grumpy. I'm just a ****.

Kingdom Hearts. All of it. Why do I keep on playing them? Why have I made such an effort to get hold of most inbetween games? I end up disappointed pretty much every time. I hate it. But god damn I love the world and characters so much... But it's been so many years since Kingdom Hearts 2. Now Kingdom Hearts 3 is in development but I don't think my little heart can take much more of this :'(

League of Legends. I love that game, it can be so much fun and yet that community just brings it right down and I can't stand it anymore. I miss the old days of Season 2, where there was much less flaming, where you could buy Heart of Gold and Force of Nature. But that community is unbearable and I can't play it anymore because it just ends up in flames. Not directed at me, just everywhere around me. It's a hive of scum and villainy. It really is.
