I have a couple of friends. Gamedev and PC. They've been in a relationship for a long time now, but recently things have been going through a rough patch, you guys know what I'm talking about.

Gamedev thinks PC has been unfaithful and has been making some hard and fast rules that are hurting PC. PC sometimes says Gamedev is overreacting, Gamedev insists PC is being inconsiderate and exploiting Gamedev. Meanwhile Gamedev is spending alot more time with Console, because Console has generally speaking always been a little more stable, leaving PC injured and resentful.

I know most if not all Escapists have heard the goss about this, from various different sources and viewpoints, so this is just my impression of the situation, does anyone else think it makes sense? If nobody's 100% right or wrong, how might they repair this awkward rift? Is three a crowd?

I'm actually tired of all the MW2 threads, and this is a very poor attempt at veiling it. However, you were pretty creative, so kudos for that at least. On topic, the best thing would be for IW to release all future copies of MW2, any newer discs, with dedicated servers, and guarantee a free copy of that to everyone who's already bought the current copy. Not that it's going to happen. Otherwise, they could just release a patch allowing dedicated servers and adding in all the stuff that made MW so great, and just release that free of charge, as an apology and recompense.

Obviously Gamedev and PC are not meant to be. Everything happens for a reason. If Gamedev is happier with Console then by God let them be together. Who are you to tell Gamedev what makes him/her happy or not? Maybe their ports didn't match up correctly (if you catch my drift). Maybe Gamedev is feeling squandered by PC's overbearing attitude about their relationship. It isn't all about PC. Both parties need to be happy in the relationship for it to work.

Then think of it as a Spore 3-install limit thread, or a SC2 no-LAN thread, or a Borderlands port-forwarding thread, or an Iron Lore gone bust thread, or a Peter Molyneux PC-market-in-tatters thread, or a brutal legend spurns PC thread... I'm not talking about one game if that's your vibe, I'm interested in a general overview of many little grumblings in the industry.

This could well be true, it makes a kind of sense I'm sure PC is having trouble coming to terms with, I've tried to remain impartial, so I hope I didn't come across as trying to tell Gamedev anything. :)

You should introduce them. PC could probably use another companion. Who knows, maybe a relationship could form.

Yeah that makes alot of sense, too. Indie seems to put less pressure on PC than Gamedev has, the expectations to perform aren't quite so high.

To break metaphor for a moment, this migration from PC to console reminds me of an earlier shift from early proprietary computer systems - such as those made by IBM and Xerox Corp. - to the PS/2 compatible. Except this time the shift is back to the proprietary...
