while having little substance which is only discovered after a substantial time with the game.
snip.
What makes you think that the amount of time spent with a game indicates its substance?

If I sit through a 3 hour movie does that mean it automatically has more substance than a 90 minute movie? Or should I have left the 3 hour movie as soon as I started to get a little bored? If I did that with all movies I would barely have seen a movie in its entirety in my whole life.
Hmm, for once I think I'll concede a point with no counter argument, I have to agree with you there. I love Skyrim and have played it quite a lot but it's lack of depth relative to their earlier releases was somewhat of a flaw.

Next example: Modern Warfare 3. Despite scoffers it made more money than... well anything ever. Hell I think we bought Russia for less than what MW3 made, and for what? Modern Warfare 2 with more grit and sand? MW3 did gangbusters because it was known as a reliable FPS series with intense multiplayer and relatively engaging single player. Great? By no means, but this year was the year of the crap FPS. Every developer and their dog wanted in on the big piles of money so they pushed bad shooter after bad shooter into our face causing us to snuggle close to our reliable, if boringly predictable friend Modern Warfare.
I would say that 2011 was a year that wasn't filled to the brim with shooters, or at least specifically shooters that followed the Call of Duty model down to a tee. Yeah, there were a few games like Homefront (and Homefront itself), but overall the more memorable games (whether the reasons be good or not) weren't quite completely straight-faced shooters, as both Brink and Deus Ex: HR were more RPG focused while Bulletstorm and Bodycount tried to be more like an arcade-FPS hybrid (but unsuccessfully garnered any positive reception).

That is absolutely incorrect. You look through this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_in_video_gaming#Game_releases], you see LittleBigPlanet 2, Bulletstorm, Killzone 3, Mortal Kombat, LA Noire, Infamous 2, Shadows of the Damned, EDF: Insect Armageddon (so bad it's good is still good), Limbo, Bastion, El Shaddai, Deus Ex HR, Dead Island, Gears 3, Rage, Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Rayman Origins, Saints Row 3, and SWToR more recently, excluding the games you and I have already mentioned.

Yep. This year was so bad.

So don't try to tell us that our opinions are wrong. You think modern games are overhyped, good for you, people have been ranting about that for years. If you don't like something, all that means is you don't like it, although I'm sure it feels good to think that the entire industry is following your views. Skyrim and Deus Ex HR are two of the best games I have ever played, and I've played damn near everything from the NES up. Am I wrong or right? Hell no. Are you wrong or right for thinking they're not that good? Hell no. But when you start trying to tell us otherwise, you've crossed the line.
I agree, I would actually call this year the best gaming year in a long time, my wallet hurt after all the games I have bought, and most of them are worth the money.

I wouldn't say that most gaming standerds have been lowered. I'd say that most of the shooters that came out this year like MW3 and BF3 were way too overhyped and were above average but not the best games ever like half the internet seems to be trying to tell me.

I'd agree with you that because there are so many bad or mediocre games that when an above average one comes out, it is now overhyped and people go crazy over it, however there have been plenty of good games this year.

Also in regards to Skyrim, it was completely overhyped, there was no way it wouldn't be overhyped and I think it was a very good game, I played through the story and loved it, fighting dragons was great but I eventully got bored of it. I think I liked the place in Oblivion(Cyrodill I think) better than skyrim(I mean the actual places not the game). Still it's a good game.
