Speaking as someone whose worked retail for a while now, if you don't want to serve people properly and respectfully, don't work in the service industry. Because that's really what retail is.

As such a person, I am sick and tired of having to clean up messes with angry customers because fellow employees couldn't get their stuff straight, or treated them rudely.
I'm a salesman, I'm nothing but polite and helpful to customers. Even when tired, hungover, upset... you name it. I'm always at the top of my game. As I said, the employees didn't handle that very well. I'm not saying they are in the right. But the OP is even more in the wrong for pressing the point when it really wasn't necessary.

At Gamestation in the UK, I asked for Gears of War 2 Game of the Year edition, so I get all the map packs etc. They were convinced a GOTY edition didnt exist.
Grrr, argh.

I mostly dislike when the employees pretend to know about a game. Example:
While I was browsing for games this kid (no more than 12) goes up to an employee and asks him about Dragon Age Origins.
The clerk asks, "What kind of games do you like?"
The kid replies, "I play a lot of wow."
The clerk, "Its just like that."

But then again I recently went to GS wearing my Mass Effect hoodie and got hit on by a cute female employee.

So I've had good and bad experiences.

The GS manager at where I shop at mostly is one of the coolest guys I know and I once saw a customer buy him a game...that's about as strange a story that I know.

I had an employee there straight up tell me that my hobby was stupid.

Honestly, you work at a game store...maybe you shouldn't tell your customers to get a life because they buy your merchandise.

Customers throwing games at me but OH WAIT, that's a problem with the idiots who shop there.

But fro srsly every Gamestop is different as far as staff stupidity goes. I only shop at one because I don't think the quality of th others is up to par.

I've only really had one bad one and that was with my pre-ordered Collector's Edition of Fallout: New Vegas. It turns out that when I pre-ordered it several months in advance that they didn't hear me say that I wanted the Collector's Edition. Thankfully, when I went to pick it up they had one copy left because some guy canceled his order. So, nope. Not too bad.

I've worked at EB Games/Gamestop. I can understand some of the frustrations that go along with what decsions head office makes (I personally think its bullshit they sell brand new preowned games for just 5 bucks under and claim no responsiblity of what condition the disc is in.)

but i will tell you some stuff I've experienced as an employee:

ME: "Hey, what can I help you with?"

CUST: "Yeah you guys have Black Ops?"

ME: "For which system?"

*gives me a look as if i'm stupid* "360, like they make it for anything else?!"

.............yeah, this may just shatter your world, but THEY DO.....next:

CUST: Do you have the new pokemon for DS?

ME: That we do, which one do you fancy? The Black version or th-" *Cust mom's stormly interrupts*

CUST MOM: "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY? I WANNA SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER"

ME: "Well, I apologize for any poor choice of words I may have used, but *Picks up Pokemon Black Version* it's just what the game is called"

CUST MOM: "oh..."

CUST: "Yeah, I'll take that one."

Lulz, little quick to pull the race card are we?

EDIT:

I'd just like to add in a little story dating back at christmas time. My sister planned on buying me Fallout 3 GOTY edition (All DLC's an stuff) and when she went to her local EB, she asked whether they had it and they were convinced she was looking for New Vegas, not F3 GOTY. PFFT.

Another thing I'd like to say is that you're all a little bit spoiled ya know, and yet you ***** about it. I agree that some stuff can be kinda shady with Gamestop, but overall its NICE TO HAVE A STORE DEDICATED TO THE INDUSTRY. Back before the days of PS2/Gamecube/Xbox. Video game stores were few and far between, I'd have to troll through Future Shop, Toy's R Us, Wal Mart's extremely limited selection and supply of games. Now we have an actual store with shelves' n shelves filled with our glory and you want to complain about petty things. ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTS. Cause when the console age gets destroyed down to where it once was (SNES-Genisis-PC days) Gamestop will liklely be out of business, and we won't have a store to call our own.

My oldest friend runs the local gamestop. He knows his shit and he hires good people. I have always been treated well there.

You have to remember, humans err. It happens. Not everyone is awesome.

Nothing to report here. My Gamestop is overseen by nice people who do their best to help me and for the most part, succeed in that regard.

A customer who is lied to and misled has every reason to press a point and feel wronged. In a perfect world we would all be serene and accept that sometimes people make mistakes, but we don't live in a perfect world, and the OP's response is entirely human and not really unacceptable.

My only bad Gamestop experience really is that the closer one to me has a manager that doesn't get it. I mentioned to him several times during one purchase that I didn't want to pre-order anything, yet he kept insisting. What was even worse, the first thing he suggested was a first person shooter, I said "I'm sorry, I don't like FPS" then he lists more FPS games I should reserve. Had to say no a few more times before he got it.

My friend got a used game from there and decided he didn't like it and they have a 7 day return policy, no questions asked, on bought used games. So if it turns out you don't like it you can return it and get your money back, or get another game, etc. This same manager I dealt with (this actually happened BEFORE my experience) gave my friend shit for bringing it back. It was day 6 and my friend hadn't had a chance to get it back to the store but he was still within his rights of returning it for his full refund. The manager said something like "Well if you didn't like it you should have brought it back right away and not wait till your time was almost up." My friend replied "Well I'm sorry that life has kept me busy, but I'm still within the 7 days." The guy gave my friend a little more crap but took it anyway.

Now we complain about this manager to the other employees all the time because the other guys are awesome and know us pretty well.

If you have a hard time finding a used copy of ICO, and the clerk says it was just purchased-

I'm that guy.

I have yet to have any personal issues with them, though I have been present through some very dumb customers. And even today I heard the employee giving tech support to a customer over the phone even though it totally isn't his job.

The customer was a Vista user saying that he had issues running Crysis 2, turns out the guy didn't have DX10 installed. And was still using DX9 despite being sure his drivers were up to date.

I have also seen my former room mate shoot his mouth off and come off like a complete ass when trying to apply for the store. The best part was that the only console he owned was a Wii and his laptop couldn't run anything made past 2005.

Anyway I have nothing but good experiences and do sometimes go in just to chat with the guys.

Lol "Gamestop".

Pretty much all I have to say. If one store is bs'ing you, go to the next.
pretty much this. There is one gamestop I normally frequent but I went to the one slightly farther away (quarter mile instead of a sixth). Anyway, I picked up a used game. It didn't work so I went to return it and the clerk who sold it to me (sorry: he was a manager) Anyway, he looked at the game and said he didn't sell it to me like that, implying that I went home and rubbed the gamecube disc on my patio for an hour before bringing it back. He did take the thing back though, full refund. The gamestop closest to me is the one I am currently working at. If we don't have something I always advise people against going to that store.

I don't go to that one anymore. I shouldn't have gone anyway since the mall it's in is known for the quarterly gang-shootout but I was determined to get my copy of Super Smash Brother's Melee.

I asked if they had Magicka in stock (didn't realize it was steam-only at the time)
They said how the hell do you spell that? Understandable.
a minute of typing later, I was told it did not exist -.-

Then I went to a different Gamestop and the lady employee told me that it might have been a steam-only thing.
The fact that a girl knew more about games than a guy made me :O
