I've heard nothing but glowing reviews of that game.

Would you say it is a must-play for Mac users? I'd like to have at least one game that didn't require me to reboot my computer to play.

Ugh, the original Marathon gives me severe motion sickness, and I've played every game under the sun. I think they added a head-bob animation to the recent release on XBLA, otherwise that game turns my stomach.

hmm, bootcamp eh? maybe I will at that. this'll let me run other stuff I've been wanting to do, like mods for my psp and a few others.
I don't think it's particularly stable - my dad used it but he's switched to something else now, but I can't remember the name unfortunately.

Bootcamp? Not stable?

Bootcamp is simply a set of EFI drivers that allow XP to run on Mac hardware.

I've been running XP in Bootcamp for over two years now and I have had no problems besides small device issues.

A Mac running XP is the same as a PC running XP.

Other methods of running Windows are Parallels and Fusion. Those are run side-by-side with the Mac OS though, and are hardly a good solution for playing a game that will demand some power.

Escape Velocity Nova, play it now, looks like Asteroids, plays like Elite. Practically the only game I played before I had a PC.

EV: Nova rules. In fact, I love the whole EV series.

I played the original Escape Velocity on an old PowerMac 7200, that came with a whopping 120mhz processor and 1.2GB hard drive!

I've owned nothing but Macs, and the first thing I do is shitcan the mouse they bundle and buy a proper multi-button device.

God knows why the company with arguably the best interface designers in the world are so clueless about the single most important interface device.

Also, Macs can play any game now, via Bootcamp and any Windows OS of your choosing. I'm running XP on my iMac right now and have STALKER, Oblivion, Deus Ex, Fallout 2, etd all installed and running great. When Windows inevitably shits the bed, which it will, I can use my rock-solid Mac OS to fix it up.
I refuse to have windows anywhere near my iMac, just my personal thing though :p
It's your loss then. And if you had some problems with previous Windows OS, I can tell you right now that Windows 7 is pretty damn good. As are the games on it.

I have 2 website links for you!

http://store.steampowered.com/browse/mac
Steam has a nice Mac section, plenty of games are worth looking into

Then theres:
http://www.apple.com/games/
Full list of games available for Macintosh, just about all you can order from there.

Enjoy, don't forget to use Metacritic or some site to that effect to see the general opinion on it before you buy the thing.

Classic games on a mac are Diablo 2, Starcraft, Age of Empires, Heroes V, Most recently Dragon Age came out, before there was Bioshock, even Neverwinter Nights, and Doom series, Wolfenstein... and that's just to name a few games.

Knights of the Old Republic, was very very poorly made port of a great game... I have a Mac with specs way above original requirements and it was still choppy- even at low details (nut that's just me, maybe someone else was able to play it with no problems whatsoever :) )

I'm sure 7 is very polished, in fact, I fucking hope it is after that abortion called Vista. It's just Windows made XP to good. The fact that only now will DirectX no longer support XP shows just how amazing an OS it was, security issues aside.

That said, my old PowerMac G4 currently has an uptime of 90+ days running Mac OS 10.4. It's never needed an OS re-install, never freezes, never crashes. I've put that machine through some of the hardest computing you can do (3D animation, video editing) and it never skipped a beat. Unix-based Mac OS is a really hard game to beat. I'll leave the criticisms of 7 up to people with experience, but I look upon it with cynical eyes.

I know this is kinda lame, since you probably already know this, but: Bioshock.

Also,

Braid
Age of Empires (II,III)
If you're into retro fantasty RPGs, the Avernum series or the Geneforge series by Spiderweb Software is pretty absorbing...

Jeez, I wasn't expecting to be beaten to the punch by the first reply.

But yea, Escape Velocity: Nova if you feel like some retro space fighting/trading/questing and other goodness.

Plus the plethora of add-ons, cheats, and other game expansions makes the re-playability high. So if you like tinkering with games yourself, this is a good stepping stone because of the easy to use editors. Pretty much the only mac game I played back in the old Mac days, and Warlords II. That game was also a good time waster.

BTW, as someone who has played Valve games on both PC and Mac...

For some reason versions of HL2 and Portal run, on average, 10-15FPS slower than under Windows XP on the same machine.

Direct2drive GameAgent have a pretty good selection. You can get Dragon Age and a few Aspyr Star Wars titles there. I haven't been impressed with the Steam selection so far. There are a few gems there, though. World of Goo, Team Fortress 2, Civilization IV, and Portal are the only three I've gotten off of it.
