Jesus, an ATOMIC laser?

Oh wait, I think many lasers produce coherent light from atoms :)
Win.
Cheers.

I shouldn't have snapped, but working in the field of atomic physics, this kind of ZOMGASM IT HAS THE WORD ATOMIC IN THE NAEM DERP DERP overreaction is why I call myself a quantum optics researcher - better to just have a guaranteed blank reaction than anything from people thinking I want to blow stuff up (and thinking that's awesome) to people thinking I want to blow stuff up (and thinking that's horrific).

Atoms - 99.9999% of the times you encounter them, they aren't blowing up in your face.

OT: I find it astounding that science has advanced so far that regular people simply doing their jobs are doing mad science[footnote]
[/footnote]. That is the world we live in. And it feels great. ^_^

Well, that's all right and good, especially dodging the Dr. Evil Doomsday 'Laser' and everything. But let's be sure this wn't cause a hackneyed bullshit movie plot, like...

I'm stuck on the phrase "solid plasma" right now. Does that sound like lightsaber technology to anyone else besides me?
It sounds like bull to me as plasma is a state of matter much as solid, liquid and gas are. "solid plasma" is equally as stupid as saying "solid liquid" or "solid gas".

Study what's happening in the Sun? Are you guys trying to awaken Surtur and cause Ragnarok or something? Instead, let's make asteroid shooting a national sport.

First of all, that laser is freakin' awesome.

Second, this laser probably takes an enormous amount of power to do what is does, so we're not going to see it strapped to anything anytime soon until someone can figure out how to strap a several gigawatt nuclear power-plant along with the laser to whatever you're strapping it to. Not to mention the laser is probably also gigantic.

I really hope that isn't portable and it takes a long time to aim. I don't want to be shot by a laser. D:

The first thing I thought of after reading the title was "Dom, we gotta drop the Hammer!"

Is this the beginning of the new age of weaponry? We can all hope so! And i'm sure the non-war practicalities for this are astounding anyways...

...until they accidentally destroy the sun...

SCIENCE!

Well, i guess, since global warming doesn't exist, it's a great idea to shoot those lasers at our sun, just to see what happens. Prepare for a "hot summer" people.
