Mafia 2 Deemed Racist

Here's the story:

"UNICO National, which claims to be the largest Italian American service organization in the United States, has taken a stand against Take-Two Interactive in regards to the portrayal of Italians in Mafia II. Calling it "pile of racist nonsense", UNICO president Andre' DiMino is demanding that Take-Two hold back on releasing the title, which is due to hit retail on August 24th.

Mafia II tells the story of Vito Scaletta, a man from a Sicilian immigrant background who joins a crime family and participates in violent acts. The game features violence, murder, sex and other adult themes, as did the first installment in the Mafia series.

DiMino openly attacked Take-Two in his statement, saying, "Why would [Take Two] foist a game on their targeted audience of young people wherein they will indoctrinate a new generation into directly associating Italians and Italian-Americans with violent, murderous organized crime, to the exclusion of all of the other 'mafias' run by other ethnic and racial groups?" DiMino continued.

"Take Two is directly, blatantly and unfairly discriminating and demeaning one group to the exclusion of all others. We are demanding they halt release of the game and cleanse it of all references to Italians and Italian-Americans," wrote DiMino.

DiMino wrote a letter to Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick requesting a meeting and advising him that the portrayal of Italian Americans in Mafia is inappropriate and insulting and furthers the "denigrating stereotype of organized crime being the exclusive domain of Italians and Italian-Americans."

In fact, Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto franchise frequently deals with criminal characters in an atmosphere of gangland fiction; GTA IV featured Eastern European immigrant hitmen, for example, while GTA: San Andreas took its cues from Los Angeles' racially-charged gang rivalries in the early 1990s.

Take-Two are no strangers to controversy, having published many titles that have attracted criticism for their violence or subject matter, from classic firestarter GTA to Bully and Manhunt. Other ethnic groups, such as Haitians and Cubans, have also protested in the past against Take Two's stereotypes of them in their video games.

UNICO National, founded in 1922, claims to be the largest Italian American service organization in America. According to the organization, volunteer members support charitable, educational and community service projects while promoting Italian heritage."

And here is 2Ks reply:

In a statement, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick responded to UNICO:

"Mafia II tells a compelling story about organized crime in America -- a subject that for decades has been featured in movies, television shows and novels. Neither UNICO nor any other organization purporting to represent Italian-Americans has seen or played Mafia II," he wrote.

"At Take-Two, we balance our right to free expression with what we believe is a thoughtful and responsible approach to creating and marketing our products," he continued. "Mafia II is M-rated in accordance with our industry's strict standards. It is specifically not targeted toward young people."

"We will only release a title that meets our standards: as art, as entertainment and as a socially responsible product," Zelnick concluded. "We aim to distinguish creative and compelling story telling that advances artistic expression from subject matter that gratuitously exploits or glorifies violence or stereotypes. I fully and completely stand behind our creative teams and products, including Mafia II."

Now, call me naíve, but I can't say I've heard someone say all Italian-Americans are criminals before. Even after the Godfather films, The Sopranos, Goodfellas, etc. etc.

What's funny is that they want a game that deals with the Italian mob to remove any and every reference to Italian-Americans:

"We are demanding they halt release of the game and cleanse it of all references to Italians and Italian-Americans,"

Clearly, Mr. DiMino has no problem with the black "Bomber" gang, or the white Greasers. Or is it just more likely that he doesn't have a clue because he's not played the game?

Anyway, just thought you'd all like to know about yet another bullshit vendetta against games.

So, IS Mafia 2 racist? Or is just portraying something factual since, you know, the Italian American mob is a real thing?

The Italians seem to be on a rampage, they've also hit up Jersey Shore with requests to stop using the term "guido" or having any references to Italy as a whole. It seems they're trying to spruce up their image as a whole.

I thought Mafia was just a cleche on films like Goodfellers and GodFarther so how can it be racist when all it's trying to be is a game based on old crime films.

I'll bet that UNICO president Andre' DiMino talks the talk, but when it comes to the walk, he decides to put a cigar in his mouth and a fedora on his head, and play Mafia 2 in the basement where no one can see him.

I mean really.. They "demand that the release is halted"? Um.. okay? Do they realize most people don't even know just what the hell UNICO is, and for that matter, does UNICO realize they have absolutely no legal grounds to make such demands?

In fact, Take-Two could probably sue UNICO for defamation, and it could be a perverse counter-take on UNICO's bitching.

This reminds me of Godfather III, (ironically, in a stereotypical fashion) when one of the mobsters makes a big deal about who invented the telephone. Getting angry about it, like it's very important. Meanwhile, everyone else is going on with their lives.

I bet UNICO is a front leftover from the old-Mafia era, for damage control purposes.. !!

.. or maybe they're yet another pseudo-Govermnet Lobbyist organization with nothing better to do.

"Cleche" ?

It's influenced by some films, but they're all influenced by the real Mafia. It's like asking people to not make WW2 games because it reinforces the notion that Germans somehow equal Nazis.

This is such bullshit it's not even funny.
Seriously, this is amazing stuff.
No, Mafia 2 is not racist, because, if it were, so would be every GTA game ever made, so would be The Godfather and every mafia film ever made and the list goes on and on.
The game is called Mafia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_%28disambiguation%29
Makes sense it would be about Italian-Americans.

lol isn't that kinda the whole point with the 1940s mafia in America? That's why it was called the Italian mafia because they were Italian, just like you get the Bombay mafia, Russian mafia and other lots of other mafia outfits today.

It's a bit stereotypical maybe, but I don't think it's racist. Now Capcom removing the black character from their box art and replacing her with a peppy white chick who doesn't feature in most of the game, THAT'S grounds for racism claims.

Isn't Mafia an Italian word... and didn't the Mafia originate from Italy/Sicily?

It's not really racist if it's true.

I love this part:
UNICO president Andre' DiMino is demanding that Take-Two hold back on releasing the title, which is due to hit retail on August 24th.
Demand? Most other organisations would request that they hold back on the release of the title... who is this guy to demand such an action? It's like he's making them an offer they can't refuse.

Next he'll be suggesting that "it will be better for Take-Two's health if Mafia II doesn't get released on the 24th... capice?".

Ugh, just, ugh!

I'm fed up of idiotic groups of people who wants a game banned just because it hurts their feelings a bit or because it's stereotyping or that they think it's racist or whatever, when the games clearly ain't.

These guys need real jobs. And lives.

Oh OK, woke up not-so-long-ago so I couldn't work out what cleche was xD

Like I said, there's an influence but they're still doing their own thing.

The main point is that the Mafia started 100s of years ago in Sicily, and then set up in the States with the large influx of Italian immigrants. They're not just making the game and playing up to a stereotype, it's set in an era when this sort of thing was going on and it's based on facts about the real Mafia. UNICO just seems to be ignoring that.

wasnt the real mafia mostly Italian?
What do you mean by mostly? The real Mafia was Italian only, Sicilian preferably. If you weren't part of a connected Italian family, then you didn't get very far. If you weren't Italian, then you didn't get anywhere, you were an associate to the connected family, at best.

There were probably some instances of "Mafia related" gangs becoming so disorganized that they accepted non-Italians into their ranks, but that would be a fluke. They would be a disheveled crew, not part of the Mafia any longer, probably occurring after a war in the ranks.

UNICO is apparently an organization with interests in revisionist history. So pathetic, and absurd. Talk about a veiled evil. It precedes thought crime on the "Checklist of things to avoid before a nation becomes Orwellian".

Anyway, who else pre-ordered the Collector's Edition? I did, and I'm psyched. I feel like I'm investing in the future of narrative in video games.

Obviously my pre-order's down on Steam; shame about the the furor over the PS3 version, but if people refuse to play a game because it hasn't got blades of grass and blood pools in it then maybe it's just as well that they don't.

The wait is excruciating now, and I've still got 8 days since I'm in the UK *shakes fist*.

I think I'm going to refuse to read reviews though. I can just see the amount of people that will knock marks off because it's not GTA.
