What about an artifact deck?

OT: I got into it in high school for a while, dropped it later though.
Artifact decks are LOADS of fun, but you'll still need to choose a color. White and blue work quite well together.

Yeah, nobody in my school plays, except for a nerdy few. Good times with them, though.
My artifact deck was full of cards that gave colorless mana.

I tried collecting all the weatherlight crew searching for the Legacy

ended up with three of these but I failed in finding the crew.
Those are hella rare and pricey, depending on where you live. I can't find anything from Apocalypse/Weatherlight era. Good job on getting them.

For the brief period of time I was into it many years ago, getting into it had something to do with a VHS Magic training tape me and my bros had for some reason.

I first started playing Magic during the Odyssey Block. Probably THE greatest TCG to have ever been created; artwork, rules, expansive card list, and isn't based on some cruddy television show.

I run two main decks. My favorite is a Beast deck I originally bought pre-made from Onslaught and over the years has gone through a number of transformations, now resides as a Green/Red/some White color base. My friends hate it because it tends to explode faster than most heavy hitters normally would and I use methods to free cast my biggest and best.

My other one is a Blue/Black mill deck that has many "opponents only" effects and works faster the more spells my enemies cast.

Tips are hard to give with a game like this. You have to learn the rules and get used to looking for EXACT WORDING. Something like the difference between "loosing life" and "taking damage", it might seem small but they are two completely different meanings and can cost you the game of the proper interaction of effects and abilities.

My suggestion is start with a pre-made, anything that has a play style you'll like. Then just play around with it, trading things in and out working with the main strategy of the deck until you get comfortable. Don't forget that MtG has a website. I learned alot in my early days from reading the articles the MtG staff wrote to see what the makers of the game had to say, it at least won't hurt.

Best of Luck.

I'm not into it yet, but my boyfriend is slowly trying to convert me. Mostly with the artwork. It didn't make any sense when he and my friend were playing, but when he turned all the rules into the Pokemon TCG rules (which I've been sort of playing since I was a kid), I got it. Shame I have no cards yet *hint hint*

Sweet. The luckiest I get is finding Vengeful Archon in M11. Still no planeswalkers for me. :c

Started with my Dad buying my brother and I an Unlimited Booster box, which we split. I only ever really played with the two of them and maybe a couple of the neighborhood kids. I remember selling a couple of dual lands for $280 a few years back.
It was a very addicting game. Every weekend he'd take us to Heroes and Hobbies and we'd spend an hour perusing the cards and we'd usually walk out with a booster pack or two. Weird thing is he was more into it than we were :p
Huge source of Nostalgia for me.

1st: Nice Avatar OP. Excalibur rules. You may like to use this one more though

As to help you. I personally suck at the game. I know all the rules and how to play, I just Don't know how to make my own custom deck that is any good. But to start try getting 2-3 starter decks, and a few boosters and DL the rulebooks from the Official site.

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Article.aspx?x=magic/rules

Get them in PDF form for the Adobe Reader.

Alright, you're a lucky bastard. This is my 1000th post. I was saving it, but you get to have it. Congratulations.

Choose two colors that match your personality best. Here is a color wheel:

Start buying packs, preferably from M11 or the upcoming M12. Prerelease for M12 is this weekend, get to your local hobby shop.

Buy as many packs as you want, then buy a starter deck of the two chosen colors. Make a deck of roughly sixty cards, following this pattern:

Card
Card
Mana
Card
Card
Mana

Repeat until you have roughly 60. This won't win you tourneys, but it's a good start.

Play with friends over and over, refining your deck. Also, use cards you really really like.
Visit the magicthegathering website, the articles are great.

My biggest piece of advice is to keep playing, keep enjoying, keep having fun, and above all, get a 20-sided dice.
Awesome. Thank you very much for the tips, and posting your the 1000th post.
Congratulations on that!
Guess i'll pick blue. i can guess what my friends will pick already
Blue centers around wizards and counter-spells. Annoy the living hell out of them.
Also great with Artifacts. Got a Blue artifact deck that centers around the Ethurum monsters.

I was introduced to Magic by a friend that was into it.
He did a horrible job explaining it.
Also always made sure the deck he let me use didn't have any of the really good cards in it. (Yes he's a prick, no I don't talk to him anymore, for other prickish reasons.)

Years later I really got into it when my gf at the time bought me a starter pack that came with 2 pre-made decks.
It wasn't long till we were getting other card sets and building our own decks.
There were weeks where me and her played every night, and we were pretty evenly matched.

Course then we eventually split, none of my friends play, and I've never been able to get another gf interested, so...

I started back when Third Edition came out. Over the years I've been on and off of Magic. I originally played through Ice Age, then I quite and came back when Fifth came out. I subsequently left and came back when the Samurai and Ninja decks came out. (Can't recall their names.) I also had a few decks that were multi-coloured oriented, something about Guilds and most recently played MTG Duels of the Planeswalkers.

I've always enjoyed the strategy behind Magic.

On a side note, does anyone remember 'Dead Man's Hand' from the gaming magazine about Magic somewhere around 1996-2000? I don't think they do that article any more. Good times. :D

The Card, Card, Mana pattern will help me greatly thank you.

And for the record I'm loving the black decks online but the only deck they had on stock when I looked was an Infection Green-blue (Ravaging Swarms) I don't suppose you have any insight on how to play an Infect green-blue well do you? :p

Not really, green-black is pretty much the best Infect combo. I don't dabble in blue too much, so can't help you there.

Ah well then, I want to make a Black Vampire deck anyway as soon as Amazon delivers the Core set I'll combine them at some point and see how it works out.

Mmmm, vampires. So much fun. Ascendant Evincar is a good one. Been meaning to make one, but alas, I am woefully unemployed.

Played yugi oh when i was in primary school. Some kids in class played it.I realised it was crap and me and my brother moved on to magic,it was much more complex and required thought. and played with some random people we met at a fantasy store place.Didn't go there very often but i remember going up to most people i saw playing the game and talking to them, well i was braver than i am now.Eventually stopped playing it because i just got to old and no one where i lived played it.I was always a green my self try yellow or red occasionally, and my brother started black but then played mostly black and blue.this about sic years ago when mirrodin was out and stoped around 10th edition.Love the art was brilliant especially the older card.Hope to get back into it one day.

I have some of those and some of the crew.
I got a bunch of cards from a cousin when I was between 7 and 10 (can't remember). I liked the pictures, so he just gave them to me. I learned from one of my friends when I was 11. Then, I couldn't find anyone else to play so I stopped. I got back in with MtG:DotP 2010, read some of the books, and discovered a friend played. It's hard to find others to play with, so I usually play online w/DotP. However, I just got one of the New Phyrexia decks (I don't usually buy cards, seeing as I got SO many when I was 7-10. Kind of funny to be the only one with white bordered cards.
If color matters, I have a HUGE green deck, with a black/red and the Phyrexia one was the blue/black

I'm using a White/Blue infect deck at the moment... and yes they do work well together. I got into Magic when I was like... nine or ten? well some guy gave me a few of his cards, I think one of each color except for white and instead two black cards. they were all creatures, but the only one I remember is Grotesque Hybrid, look it up its quite old, anyway I got the 7th edition set later on, and I've been collecting on and off. I had to scrap all of my old cards because they were just too old though, so I got a bunch of scars of mirrodin and some new phyrexia, and made myself a couple of average decks. a white/blue and a red/green the red/green has some pretty awesome cards in it. like Phyrexian Hydra. I love that card...
