Magic is a fun game. But I never spend a ton of money. It is highly possible to make fun, competitive, interesting decks for under $50. A few months ago I spent about $110 and made 8 decks, which are all great.Farcore said:

Try Magic 2012 from XBLA/(maybe PSN and steam?) instead. It's been out a week so there's bound to be players out there. It's called Duels of the Planeswalkers as well but game history shows it as "Magic 2012" I had a lot of fun with it.Farcore said:
Wizards are also trying a campaign called "Friday night magic" (I think?) that involves meet ups at local places around the world so you might want to look into that? It's beginner friendly and they lend decks for games that night apparently.

Friday Night Magic is a good start if you're looking to play with people, and as others have suggested, Duels of the Plainswalkers is available on console and PC. MTG Online is something else you could look into. The way the economy is for it, most cards are dirt cheap and you can actually pick up a lot of stuff cheaper than buying paper cards, might be worth looking into.

Its still expensive, if not more so- a decent deck for a noncompetitive event(i.e. just friendly local events) is gonna cost you about £120, tournament ones Im not sure but I know the old favourite Valakut Ramp went for £300 odd.
Look for a local meet up near you, FNM, prereleases and game days are awesome fun.
Your also coming in at a perfect time, the main card pool (i.e. the last 2 sets and core) is rotating soon meaning that all the old strategies that have developed over the last year are gonna be obselete and its gonna take time for people to wrok out new ones, an even playing field for returnign players.

Its one of those things that can be as cheap as 5 dollers or as expensive as thousands it really all depends on how much you want to put in. If your worried about costs buy a preconstructed deck and enjoy yourself if you have friends that play see if they can help you find your style n build a deck around that styleFarcore said:

The solution I found for myself was playing in the release and pre-release tournaments every three months. That way I got a good overview over the new edition, had a day of fun for about 20 quid and was then able to make up my mind whether or not to buy more cards from that edition.
I'd say its worth it if you have a local gaming place that has MTG events. the best time and place to start is the prerelease/gameday/launchparty for a new block. for example the prerelease for M12 that is coming up pretty soon. then, if you like the set, buy a starter deck and go to some drafts.

well thats not true every plan has a weakness it's just a matter of finding it and all cards even new ones are just as open to being stoped as old ones platnum angel as you said really isn't that bad its a artifact creature to its open to both artifact removal and creature removal aswell as it costs 7 which is extreamly late game it also doesnt stop your health from droping below 20 often people will kill the opponent than remove there angel after for the win it also has only a decent body esspecially for its cost making it very open to damage style removal aswellMichael Hirst said:
