Im skipping Alara because of the utter fail it is plagued with and taking a break.
What looks wrong with Alara? I havn't played since Ravnica block, but am honestly considering going back into it with Alara.
three color buggery split into 4 parts that overlap like elephants... as in poorly.

I suppose Eventide might be able to bridge the gap but i'm not wasting my money on it, mythic rares be damned

I went to the Alara pre release and it works really well, unless you play with only Alara against any other 1 or 2 color deck. The only thing Alara needs more are cards that only use 1 color mana. But having a 7/7 with "whenever a creature an opponent controls is put into the graveyard from play, that player pays 2 life or you gain control of that creature".

That's the one thing I was thinking - the block looks like it's going to have absurd synergy with Eventide/Shadowmoor... but I own literally 0 cards from that block.

Mythic Rares are only important if they put vital utility cards there. Instead, they put those at common and uncommon. And at Mythic Rares are... 11CC creatures and Planeswalkers. I don't really mind if I miss out on those.

Shadowmoor specifically as it's hybrid mana costs match up with Alara (Red/black, Black/blue etc.)

Wow I feel old, I don't recognize anything you kids are talking about. I played from Fallen Empires to Tempest when the balance started getting totally out of whack.

I had the most hardcore red/black/green deck though.

Black Knights, Ehrnam Djinns, Kird Apes, Phyrexian War Beasts, Birds of Paradise, Terror, Lightning Bolt, Rolling Thunder, Giant Growth and Unholy Strength formed the core of the deck. Other notable cards included Desert Twisters, a Feldon's Cane, Demonic Tutor, Fountain of Youth and a bunch of the old school dual lands: Taiga, Bayou and Badlands, as well as City of Brass.

I also built a blue swarm deck around the Homarid Spawning Bed and Sunken City. Only somewhat effective but loads of fun to play.

I play right now I have two decks a B/W from that focuses on enchantments, and a R.U that hasn't been tested.

I've had upwards of fifteen decks operating at the same time. Then I stopped playing for a month aand then scrapped them all.

BUt I didnt get to go to the alara prerelease, cause I'm poor now, oh well hopefully I'll be able to get some alara for christmas. along with what ever is after alara. I generally get that an nothing else.

I also play for fun, and only competitively in limited, and I suck at it. it's a hobby, an expencive hoby, but one none the less.

played years ago at school (8-10 years ago) my fave deck be a blue 'No' deck

lots of counterspells of various types, tons of mana generation, and some beefy artifact creatures with enchants to make em better

the joy of saying 'no' to someones entire hand when they try to cast it all is fun

I started playing back at the end of Revised (pre-4th). Am I to believe that I started before anyone else here??

Haven't really played since 2000, though...

I don't think I could ever get into it. Also things seem broken a tad. I mean, faries and hobbits killing dragons and zombies?!

But people have fun with it, the rules just seem to pass over me.

I quit during Odyssey block. The game just lost its flair for me. It felt like they kept just rehashing things and when they did introduce new mechanics, they just felt kinda tacked on. I knew M:TG was truly dead for me when I heard some of the newer generation of players talk about how 'overpowered dual lands were.'

Also, while this doesn't actually have much to do with the gameplay itself, I didn't care much for the new setting. The characters and storyline just didn't engage me. I own all of the major books for the storyline starting all the way with how Yawgmoth became what he was in the storyline all the way to Apocalypse, and while they are hardly high-brow fantasy reading, I did enjoy the storyline quite a bit. The Odyssey book however, failed to grab me the same way as when I read the first one.
Keep those memories alive and never read Time Spiral block ;)

As for myself, I've been playing casually since Urza Block. With Odyssey most of my friends stopped playing, so it went from 'every lunchbreak and after school' to 'few times a month'. New border layout almost killed it for me, and I still dispise it to this day. Other than that, the game is still going strong, cards & sets are nice

Flavor on the other hand... I wonder what kind of historically low they can come up with now? (after the removal of story from flavor text and the Time Spiral killfest...)

Ah, but that hobbit can't beat the dragon in a direct struggle! he must use trickery or guile! (ability)

That, or have no chance at all...

I own a rather big collection and enjoyed the game immensely for a few years with friends, we played casually, building decks from the cards we got in boosters.

But one friend of mine got too far into it and started buying extremely expensive cards on the web, beating us every single time. I was more of a make-it-up-as-you-go type of guy, where every match you play turns out differently than the previous one, constantly changing decks, not relying on drawing specific cards to win on turn 3.

That's what killed it for me, I did not want to spend a lot on my deck just to improve on my chance of winning the match. I do still play it occasionally with an other friend, just trying out new stuff and don't focus on winning, just having fun.

I'm still on a quest to build a tournament-caliber deck from "trash" cards you find loose in shoe boxes.

And, I've been planning to go and restart collecting cards to resell (there's huge money in this, judging from my past experiences). Can anybody here make a small list of in-demand cards now? State the name and set from which it came from (probably list the ability as well). Last time I checked, Extirpate [http://store.tcgplayer.com/item.asp?id=14722&From=Magic] costs roughly $10 (our currency converted to US Dollars) a piece here.

I have a few decks. I used to play with my younger brother a lot. The game was pretty fun.
