Never had the pure resolve to play it, back when i was younger (Bad time to try.) I attempted it, and assumed it was too hard. Later on, I catch my cousin playing and recognise "Hey! Is that 'Magic'? Yea? Yea, I remember playin that shit, yea, yea it was hard too."
Only after a few minutes argument I saw strategy, tactics, how much more complicated it was. But for some reason... I just couldn't get into it... but I discovered one of the most awesome and diverse fantasy mythos' created. I still reference to those creatures actually...

Im skipping Alara because of the utter fail it is plagued with and taking a break.
What looks wrong with Alara? I havn't played since Ravnica block, but am honestly considering going back into it with Alara.
three color buggery split into 4 parts that overlap like elephants... as in poorly.

I suppose Eventide might be able to bridge the gap but i'm not wasting my money on it, mythic rares be damned
The exalted bonus from Bant is pretty awesome when it is stacked up with lifelink, dual strike, trample, first strike, and shroud. It's great fun.

Well after looking into this game a bit on the greatest of all websites (Wikipedia), it seems like something I'd want to give a try. But because I don't know of anyone in my area who plays, I'd have to use the online version. So my question is this:

Does anyone here use the online version, and if so, is it any different/worse than the real version?

I think it peaked during Ice Age. The earlier editions and expansions were still a bit rough mechanically and artistically, while the later stuff started piling on lots of stuff (I'm not trying to imply that all of it was bad, mind you).

I play, but I have to admit, to me, Magic is loosing it's flare... Most of the newer collections seem really broken and overpowered... Abilities like "immortal", or abilities that cause you to win or loose the game instantly... Just seem contrived reasons to enter the DragonBallGT/Pokemon/digimon mentality: "Just make everything bigger and it will be better"... Doesn't really work like that.

Still... My best decks are my red Burn deck, and my black deck.

With my black deck and a bit of luck, I can put Scion of Darkness in play in 2 turns with 2 swamps manas. Second round and suddenly you face a 6/6 creature with trample that, if it damages you, can resurrect any of your creatures under my control. Usually I slap on an additional Unholy Strength or Shadeform for the overkill.

oh my zombie deck more pro with 3 underworld dreams and cards that are life exchanging in others words i lose you lose then in turn through your loss of life i gain it. Also my zombie cards have the tendency to come back the next turn. My favorite is my corrupter wich is */* and has attack and power= #zombies in play and in graveyards. But if im not in tournies i add a little cheap card from the ravnica block that allows me to ressurect ur cards and put em in play on my side as zombies. MUAHAHAHHA

Ignoring the silly 'Snow Covered' lands, of course. I tend to agree, although I would put it at the whole Ice Age to Mirage span. After Mirage things started getting out of hand with individual card power spiraling out of control.

The final nail in my Magic coffin was the Serra Avatar from Urza's Saga(?). It used to be that one card couldn't end the game all by its self. It used to be that you had carefully craft a deck based on many factors instead of just casting one Uberspell. No more.

Well, cumulative upkeep is really the star mechanic of Ice Age and snow-covered stuff is just a weird bit of flavor.

The stuff that came out around the same time as Ice Age represents a general cleaning-up of the game, too. Fourth Edition cut out a lot of the real power stuff from the game's early days, for example (no Timewalks and Moxes and dual lands and the like); Chronicles -- the white-border reprint of a small selection of cards from Arabian Nights, Legends, Antiquties, and The Dark -- is perhaps the best example of this trend. There was a real emphasis on setting some limits that no card could really transcend. The powerful stuff around that time was more, err, stylish, in my opinion. The star cards of that era, like Necropotence and Zuran Orb, are still pretty ridiculous, but they're ridiculous in a way that's more fun than Black Lotus ridiculous or Channel-Fireball ridiculous, in my opinion.

The introduction of the "flanking" mechanic in Mirage is kinda representative of Magic going in a direction that (bolded to prevent confusion) wasn't necessarily bad but wasn't really something I liked. It was a mechanic that gave you an advantage over people who didn't have cards from that set. Now, the advantage from flanking was pretty much... microscopic, but it signifies the beginning of a design style that I didn't really like. (I still have, like... err, up to Tempest, I guess?)

EDIT: In retrospect, years later, man was I wrong. The game improved dramatically with Ravnica and onward.

I stopped playing around the time that Mercadian Masks and Urza's Legacy or whatever came out, I think. Back in 7th and 8th grade, playing Magic was THE thing to do, and we had fun, until the mentality changed to "I can afford better cards and have a better deck than you, so therefore I also have a bigger dick." After that I would just casually play every now and then. I still have my cards but haven't played in years.

I was always more interested in the setting and stories anyway. When I played, I liked to imagine that I really was this powerful wizard with all these spells and monsters at my command. I liked the storylines about Urza and Mishra, and the story from Tempest and Stronghold and Exodus. The last storyline that seemed really interesting was for Mirrodin, I think. I haven't kept up at all since then.

Five Color Control FTW.
Hell yes.

I stopped playing properly when Odyssey hit, and was even more turned off from Magic when I heard about how Goblins turned into some mad powerhouse deck in a later expansion (I had a Goblin Deck from waaaaaay back when that always got my opponents off guard). Later on, i went to the Mirrodin Block prereleases and occasionally play a bit of Net Magic from time to time. Run some mad combo decks using some of the new cards I've actually heard of.

Ultrjoe, what would be the combo for that Evershrike? The only "counter him all you want" setup I know is Isochron Scepter + Counter Spell. (Haven't kept up since after Champions of Kamigawa).

That's nothing! I have a friend who has a cardboard box full of them (the height is lower so he doesn't have that much, but still!)

That game is so much fun. Building combos is incredibly fun. My green deck is being designed to shit 1/1's!

Beacon of Creation + Mycoloth + Coat Of Arms.

I played when Invasion was coming out, then stopped, then started again very casually in the Ravnica cycle. I used a Boros deck that was pretty shabby, but seeing as the only person I played against was my brother, who could build a tournament-winning deck in an hour, I got discouraged and quit pretty quickly.

EDIT: One of the few times I managed to beat him, he built a sapling deck, where he used Doubling Seasons to create a massive horde of 1/1 sapling tokens. I used teferi's moat, called green, and rendered him useless.
