Some guy once said "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." So yeah, technology can do anything magic can and more.

Plus, guns and robots are cooler than fireballs and magic staffs.

The DSM said:
Well isnt Science a kind of magic?

OT: Magic, I choose pyromancy, I burn stuff :D
Necromancy. I control undead!

OT: Magic if it involves necromancy, technology if it doesn't

Has this conflict ever been fleshed out in a video game? It sounds like quite an intriguing idea to me.

OT- Magic wins. Giants mechas can't do much with a +100 Burden and constant Corrode Armor in effect.

That's science, for sure. It would make a rather interesting war though.

Science.
I can't even count how many ultimate mega-uber-over9000 weapons science fiction created.

They are both equal.
What magic can, do science can do it to.They both take a lot of time to understand and learn(NOT MASTER, not one man can master science or magic as the case may be), they both build on themselves adding to the knowledge of each generation.
So in the case of Mage vs. Sniper/soldier ,some times mage wins , some times the sniper/soldier wins, it really depends on the circumstances.

who's to say they're not the same?
Technology at a high enough level of advancement could probably be considered as magic

I can't decide as the thread hasn't explained what type of magic and science, are we going by harry potter's magic and current day technology? Or what?

Magic and mages represent science and scientists in such high fantasy.

As for a battle between science and magic, it could be fun. Played a central role in Final fantasy 3 (SNES).

And for the famous quote:
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
and the corrolary,
Any technology that is distinguishable from magic is not sufficiently advanced.

Magic. Since magic can practically bend reality to it's will, and since it has no real limitations, then it could defeat technology anytime.

The only way Technology could possibly defeat Magic, is if there existed some kind of magic-jamming device, or if they delved into enchanted tech like Golems and such, or alchemy, and even then, that would defeat the purpose of having a war between them.

Either way, I would still side with Technology, because it's cooler than magic, and if there wasn't a war, I would become a Technomancer.

In my experience with fantasy, magic seems to stop science progressing. I have yet to read about a culture that can embrace bboth science and technology. It always seems to be one or the other.
I think really it depends on the kind of magic and the advancement of the technology. I mean, when you consider magic like that in the Belgariad and the Mallorean that can do anything but remove something from existence, technology can't do much against it. But then, you get technology such as the Death Star that can destroy entire planets and you think that there is no magic that could possibly stand against such technology.
I suppose in a battle that took place purely on the surface, forgetting the advantage technology has with orbital bombardments and the like then magic would most likely emerge the victor. Any army of mages on the ground protected by magical shielding, throwing spells of unimaginable power at say an army of space marines (probably the single most powerfull sci-fi force i have encountered)then i think the mages would win. They would probably boil the marines alive inside their armour.
Of course, when up against a force like the Imperial Guard from Warhammer 40K with their billions of men and tanks and aircraft, the magic users would likely run out of power long before they had taken down even a tenth of the Imperial Gaurd.
I think man for man magic users win, but overall i'm going with technology. You could create an army with some fairly decent weapons that far far outnumbered the magic users and kill them all. And then there is the technological advantage of being able to destroy a planet before the magic users were even aware of an enemy presence

I've really thought about this too much havent i?
And now my head hurts

Depends on how you define magic. But I suppose magic would win anyway.

BUT one must not forget that the difference between magic and a highly developed technology is almost non-existant.

Science. While in the midst of saying the spells they are to cast, all the magicians are vaporized by the Star Child; David Bowman wins again.
