So I moved last May, trying to get back into Magic since there was a game store near me. I decided to go to the Friday Night Magic event due to it supposed to be fun and less focused on competition.

Man was I wrong. Everyone I played against had $200-$300 decks. Apparently there is events you can only do if you can actually win as well. It just wasn't fun. It wasn't fun having it rubbed in my face that I suck. It also wasn't fun being felt like I was left out. It seemed that outside of the matches, no one would give me the time of day. Why is it I can't be accepted in even a place that is my comfort zone?

It's not your fault I think. In this case at least. And I'm right there with you. My deck is maybe worth 50 euro's or something, and I got a lot of cards from a friend at that. It's not fun to go to any magic event for me as everyone always has better decks than me. So I just stick to playing with friends. We even invent 'new games' with the cards every now and then.

That's another problem, no friends. I have a few edh decks I made but no one to play them with.

I can certainly relate to you on this. I built an EDH deck but all of my friends who played it had falling outs with each other. So... haven't played it in ages.

I find that it depends a fair bit on which venue you go to for FNM. That is depending on whether or not the city you live in is big enough for that. Try to find smaller more casual stores, and even if it's not FNM they might have other more casual events now and then. One of the stores I've went to has weekly EDH games, so if you could find something like that, without the competition I think you'd find a much better crowd.

I personally only play with personal friends who also happen to play Magic, so I'm kinda blessed in that department. If you want to have "even footing", I recommend the pre-releases for new sets - everyone gets nice cards, nobody can say how good their cards are going to be, and as long as you understand the game and know just a little bit about the set you'll have fun. Also, it's great cost/value - you'll get more cards out of it then you would have normally gotten.

Also, if that is any consolation, there are pretty darn good "budget decks" out there - it just depends on what you are playing. I have the problem that I like to play Casual Legacy (for the uninitiated, that means almost all cards are allowed), so my friends and me get screwed over regularly by one particular friend who has pretty overpowered crap.

Why not just photocopy a bunch of the cards you want to use and show up with a photocopy deck. If they let you play, you can compete on equal footing and have a great time. If they don't let you play, you will have proven to them that it's a bullshit hobby constructed to make people with too much disposable income feel better about themselves by succeeding through sheer wallet tenacity. I mean it's one or the other, right?
