Aside from the ending, some of the out-of-place fanservice, and the dub, I'm a big fan of My Hime. I even bought My Otome after purchasing My Hime. I'll probably double dip if Funimation manage to do a Blu-ray release on either of those titles.
Personally, I didn't think Mai Otome stood up well after Mai Hime. I think they cleaved closer to the manga with Otome, to their detriment. I really liked parts of Otome, but I just couldn't get into it the way I did Hime. Mai Hime was just so damn ballsy.

Reguarding Sailor Moon, I'm eagerly awaiting for when this new Salior Moon starts airing this winter. Hopefully, a US distributor will license it when it comes out.
I am as well. However, do try watching the original subtitled. It is well worth it.

I'll also, look into those two other titles you've mentioned. Also, since you're a big fan magical girl titles, what you think of Little Witch of Academia?
Little who of the what now?

Oh! I think I never heard of it until now. Also, I think it's currently one episode long. It sounds mildly interesting - more the Kiki's Delivery Service route than a standard magic girl series - I shall have to YouTube it.

Magical girl stuff huh? Well, that's not really my sort of thing but Madoka Magica was quite good, although it's sort of an obligatory recommendation nowadays, isn't it? Other than that, I watched and enjoyed Cardcaptor Sakura as a little kid, so maybe look into it.

Definitely Princess Tutu, it's a solid show, first few episodes are meh, but it gets better, way better. It has a good mixture of being very dark yet lighthearted, it finds balance between the two that isn't overbearing. I'm not a big fan of magical girl anime, or most anime anymore for that matter, but I still recommend this show a bunch, despite its silly sounding name.

Yeah, just wtach Madoka.
It's short; but it's non-conventional and one of the best magical girl show ever made (IMO obviously).

Uh, but if Revolutionary Girl Utena counts as magical girl, watch that. I've seen like three episodes of it, but it's pretty and good and I think it gets much better.
Utena, though kind of on the borders of being a Magical Girl series is definitely worth watching if you can handle the levels of surrealism, and how $&#*##-ed up the characters are.
But a warning before you start watching.
If you watch it, you *have* to watch it *multiple* times.
First time--you watching the series getting your mind blown.
Second time--re-watching & seeing everything behind everything you thought was fluff, saying "Oh god I can't believe I missed that...."
Third time--Watching it in company, and watching the expressions on first-time viewers faces as events unfold. Massively entertaining.

I'm confused, when I read "magical girl" I assume people mean the "mahou shojou" genre. So uhm, I'll try to recommend something. Haven't seen Madoka yet so I can't offer an opinion on that one. Personal favourite would be Nanoha, starts off normally but for some reasons get pretty serious in the middle of the first arc. Got good tone, decent setting and some awesome characters. A bit... well, the characters are young and the result is obvious. But what would you expect from a mahou shojou.

Sailor Moon is a classic, horrible video and sound quality, slow and a bit repetetive. Lives a lot on it's characters. Haruka and Michuri is easily my favourite lesbian couple in fiction. Goofy humour, ridicolous enemies and a stupid main character. But it's enjoyable, and have some clasic bright moments.

If you liked A Certain Magical Index, you might like A Certain Scientific Railgun if you haven't seen that, which is a spinoff although that has a little bit more slice of life/fanservice episodes than Index. I personally like Railgun better and I think it's at least worth a watch.

Standard disclaimer--I'm old, my recommendations are 'old-school'.

Well, if you're getting in to magical girl series Sailor Moon is the Queen...

Though either Cutey Honey or Minky Momo would be considered the original...

Fancy Lala and Full Moon Wo Sagashite are very different takes on the idea of a transforming magical girl.

Magic Knight Rayearth (tv series) is a must-see. Though if you do watch it I fully expect a letter full of swearing & death threats once you see *that* scene. Which is a truly excellent scene, makes the whole anime, but you'll still want to kill me for a while. The OVA's are pretty decent too.

If you like cute things...you'll *love* Akazukin Cha Cha. Very rote, often repetitious. *However*, the antics of Cha Cha and her little friends as they have magical misadventures and *go* *to* *magic* *kindergarten* are eye-meltingly *ADORABLE*!!!! Bonus if you stick it through to the end of the rather long series is that there is one season where the standard formula is ditched and it's just Cha Cha and company having cute little adventures.
Extra bonus, Giant pink Kitty mecha called Nyandabar. Really.

The Project A-Ko movies are another kind of different take on magical girls...bonus points if you can spot the reveal of why A-Ko has her powers.....

Galaxy Fraulien Yuna is a fun one-shot spoof of the magical girl genre...

plenty more where those came from if you like them....

I'm not exactly new to anime, but I'm kind of new to the magical girl and need some recommendations. To give you a general idea of my taste in anime, here is a small list of titles I've enjoy:

-Sekirei
-Ouran Host Club
-Shakugan No Shana
-Claymore
-A Certain Magical Index
-Code Geass
-One Piece

EDIT: edited for grammar
Playing Code Geass and Claymore in magical girl genre might be a little iffy, I mean if thats the case you might as well go watch death note since its amazing and there is "sort of" a girl with "magical" powers.

Also to be real MADOKA MAGICA GO WATCH IT NOW ITS AMAZING

Re: Cutie Honey is amazing. It's short but so damn good.

Mai Otome has been mentioned. Great show with great voice talent. I personally liked this show better than HiME but I think I'm pretty alone in that.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. The first season is quite good, the second one is pretty darned good and the third one is totally absurd and really freakin' awesome.

And then we have Dai Mahou Touge. It's more of parody/comedy but it's totally hilarious and a darned cool anime.

Can't go to wrong with the classic Sailor Moon, as long as you don't mind something a little old school.

I only list those titles to give other users an idea of some of the shows I enjoy. I very well aware that Code Geass and Claymore are not magical girl titles.

I'm glad that you mentioned about that one, as I've tried to watch a few episodes of Princess Tutu, but had trouble getting into it. Since you said that it gets much better later on, I definitely give it another go.

Sadly there are no legal streams of the old Sailor Moon available, so I won't be able to check it out. As far as Little Witch of Academia, a second episode should be coming out in 2014. You can see the episode on Crunchyroll or DAISUKE's Youtube page. Here's a link for more info on the title: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Witch_Academia

To everyone on this forum, I really appreciate all of the recommendations you all have given me so far. I especially got to thank SomeLameStuff for recommending me Fate/Kaleid. I hope that one gets an English dub next year.

I would say it's 50/50 that either no one has licensed it or it's licensed by *rolls dice*...Sentai Filmworks. And now I check Wikipedia.

Sentai it is. Is it sad that I can guess who has the license for something just based on its content? Sentai Filmworks: We take Funimation's table scraps.

So that means either a Sentai dub or subs only. But I repeat myself.

Well it would make sense that Sentai would have licensed it instead Funi since Sentai does have the license to Fate/Stay Night and the Unlimited Blade Works movie. I personally hope it will get a dub because I rarely buy title sub-only. I'm just glad that Aniplex of America is nowhere near this title.

Does The Slayers count? Cause that's a fun little anime to watch.
I already own the first 3 season and the movies/ovas of the Slayers and plan on getting seasons 4 & 5 at a later date.

While I enjoyed Railgun, I'm a bit more of a Magical Index guy. Regardless, I'll be purchasing both of them whenever Funimation gets around to releasing them on Blu Ray, if they are able to.

Maybe Heaven's Lost Property as well. Not as much magical girls but angels who have magical powers.
The angels are more of advanced cyborg robot things that have technology that can warp a bit of reality, but yeah it has that magical girl aesthetic.

The manga is pretty great and it seems they are dropping the ecchi comedy thing.

Not really magical girl(girls with tech), but it does have that feel and it is over the top. It has a really fun soundtrack and having their own theme song gives them power.

People have already mentioned it, so I'll just add one more recommendation for Princess Tutu. Starts kind of silly, but kind of like Nanoha (also recommended, though it stops being a magical girl show 3.5 episodes in), the introduction of the antagonist sparks its getting much better.

It gets a bit mindbending, in a very good way.

Unless you watch the Dawn of the Dark Sisters OVA, which is rather darker. It makes a touch more sense if one has seen the original two-episode OVA (and knows Yuna's character, especially), but I still thought it was pretty fantastic.

Although now I know to skip the eight or so minutes in between
Gemmu's death
and the morning after scene, even if it means ignoring the foreshadowing of the first episode. After the pure shock of what came before, it's just infuriating.

I wonder if they ever translated the games those anime are based on...

Bara_no_Hime said:
... I wonder how they'll handle the aforementioned plot relevant sex. I mean, the sex in the other two routes was just kinda there for porn. Heaven's Feel, on the other hand... yeah, I have no idea what they're going to do this time. Unless they just make the sex PG 13 style with fade-outs and careful camera angles.
They might go the way the Realta Nua release did. That replaced the sex with Sakura drinking Shirou's blood every so often...I hope not, though. It makes sense in the context of the Nasuverse (blood and semen are both magical), but it's hardly as character-building.

See, I didn't mention Princess Tutu because I could never get into it. I liked it, kinda, but... I dunno, it just never clicked for me somehow. Something about the backstory started to lose me when I got farther in.

I tried rewatching it recently and didn't get very far. I keep hearing good things, but... yeah.

Is that how they managed it in Realta Nua? I'd wondered about that.

That's... yeah, really lame. It technically works, and it's better than the weird "dolphin" scene from the Fate/Stay anime, but... yeah. I'd much rather have PG13 sex than random vampirism.

Oh yeah, they do. Although I think Funimation had it for a while, because Geneon originally had it and then they folded...maybe?

The good news about Aniplex is that you don't need to worry about them licensing anything they haven't produced themselves. That is, anything that doesn't have the "*wooshwooshwoosh*ANIPLEX" at the beginning.

But yeah, Aniplex, good luck selling Blast of No One Gives a Fuck for a hundred twenty bucks. But it comes with an artbook!

Railgun season two is best anime*.

*A Certain Scientific Railgun S may or may not actually be best anime.

Oh yeah, Symphogear. That anime was way less terrible than it should have been. More important than the tech aesthetic though, I think Symphogear is...how do I put this delicately...not for girls, which arguably disqualifies it from being mahou shoujo.

Sailor Moon
Cutey Honey
Princess Tutu
CardCaptor Sakura
Magic Knight Rayearth
Tokyo Mew Mew

I think that Otome Yokai Zakuro would count as one...Or close enough, the protag doesn't really transform because she is half kitsune, but she is magical, and fights monsters.

Angelic Layer isn't a traditional magical girl show either. The protag enters a robotic fighting game contest. But it's close enough to the feel of a magical girl show and most of the robots look like magical girls.

Damn, never thought I'd get ninja'd on Dai Mahou Touge, either way all solid choices to pick from except Otome,Mai-hime all the way.

Most of what I was going to say has been covered so other than those Kamikaze Jean, isn't too bad from what little I watched.Pretty Cure is aimed at the younger crowd but is pretty enjoyable in small doses
