Magicka: Is Paradox retarded?

My weekend got off to a terrible start: i perchance the retail version of Magicka, in the hopes, that the said game will keep me entertained. I install it, play solo, and love it. Once i try the the multiplayer, the game, which had a terrible launch because of this... thing, shows me a selection of unplayable servers.

What took me aback, is that Magicka is a Steam game, yet has no Steam integrated server search, as the game did not appear in the server list outside the game

It is then, that i start to suspect, that the culprit is, as Steam put it, multiplayer CD key, which was to be, again according to Steam, asked after the game started, and no such thing was ever asked.

After digging through Steam's, and other, forums, i come to a troubleshooting thread, which states THAT THE "CD MULTIPLAYER" CODE IS TO REGISTER YOUR GAME ON THE FORUM OF PARADOX, and nothing else.

Followed by this discouraging news was the instructions on how to fix the damn thing, which included port opening, and firewall tuning, which worked for 2 times, after which it stopped to comply, and even fucked up my internet connection to a state of me not being able to use it for 2-3 minutes

My question here is: why not use steams(not so) good server serch, why do developers want to surprise butseks the end user so badly, as to not use that searcher, and force the end user to do all the firewall tweaks by himself?

having said that, i have to add that this is not a good way to attract paying customers, especially those, who want to leave piracy behind. i probably could have chose better some argue, but how was i supposed to know the multiplayer was still this bad after a year of it being out

have your selves a nice gaming weekend dudes... i know i probably won't >.<

That sounds very frustrating. Trouble shooting goose chases are never fun.
Hopefully, mine gets off to a better start. I'm firing up Atelier Totori for the first time. I hope it turns out to be good. (That was part of the discussion, right? Our own gaming weekend experiences?)

Even if you do find a multiplayer game you usually get disconnected by some random crash anyway, I wouldn't even bother trying to get it to work

So a game that was focusing a lot of advertising on how it was a great multiplayer game... doesn't really have any multiplayer?

Huh. Well done.

As for me, maybe some BF3, Batman, Racedriver GRID, and/or I'll finally try finishing Dark Souls.

oh boy

OT: Yes. Yes, they are fucking stupid. I didnt bother going after a fix though. I believe me and friends just ended up using Hamachi or something.
What? Did you find the game bad? I've heard positive things about it. I'm going in blind (I didn't play Rorona). How was your experience with it?

I never played it, but theres a rather nasty inside joke about Atelier Totori. Dont worry, it hasnt really got anything to do with the game itself.

Its just that now, I cant read the name without laughing my ass off.
Do I want to know the joke?

Strange, I never had to go through any of that. Then again I actually received my copy as a gift through steam from a friend looking to play, so perhaps it's something to do with being a retail copy that you bought. Honestly I didn't even know the game was released retail!

Actually a very fun game however. Not something I'd ever want to play alone, but with a few friends it's just insanely entertaining especially when you're all talking over voice chat with one another. The way magic works is a lot of fun to play around with and some of the insane things you can do are extremely entertaining.

I assume that means you were one of the people that actually is capable of PLAYING the game at all, then?

You managed to get through single player? Last time I checked that city level still lagged so bad it was unplayable for me. And like a dolt I bought some DLC for it before finishing the main game. I don't want to hate on Magicka, but I have to, it is and always was a huge buggy mess. My sympathies bro.

Edit: the Paradox steam sale made this thread necro quite apt.

This topic is from months ago, why'd you dig it up just to quote me? I take it you're having trouble running Magicka?

But to answer your question yes, I've played the game and never had any trouble running it. Played through the campaign as well as the Vietnam dlc with some friends. Fun times were had. Very silly game but a fun one nonetheless.

thread necro!

and yea this is common for paradox games.

i had to register europa 3 with paradox forums, it is kinda of a hassle. but paradox games are worth it.

however paradox does NOT make it easy to enjoy their games, even though their games tend to be absolutely amazing.

Had* Bought it a few months ago during a Steam sale, and I've been trying to collect info to see what the chances are I could gather a few people together and try to get Paradox to fix the damn game for the VAST majority of people. From what I've heard on the Steam forums, along with my own experience, the game is terribly optimized for most people, including major issues with integrated graphics cards. It looked to be a decent game, but since I could barely beat the second boss with how terribly my fps was, I ended up uninstalling the game and pretty much plan on ignoring everything else Paradox-related. For a bit of support...

Pity. I was just raving in another topic how amazing Crusader Kings 2 is. One of the best strategy games released in years, no question, and developed entirely in-house by Paradox games. Runs flawlessly too, 40+ hours of gameplay and I haven't had a single glitch, error, crash, or really any problem at all aside from a terrifying habit to devour my evenings.

Several games I've had have required immense amounts of dicking around, only to discover a relatively simple solution. In particular several problem games I had were fixed by running Steam in admin mode.

Another memorable moment was when I installed Arkham City, and it asked me to upgrade my graphics drivers. I'm like "sure, why not", and do so: only when I start trying to run the game it keeps crashing. Eventually I give the hell up (the game was at release and no one had any idea how to fix anything at that point) and start playing Fallout 3... only that's crashing too. After nearly two days I finally figure out that the drivers were the problem, rolled them back, and everything worked just fine.

Trying to play League of Legends, mostly, and I just got out of a game which started with only four people actually playing on my team and two of them were feeding Herpaderper pretty much constantly. And it didn't get much better.
