I was watching a Dead Space video a while back and noticed something... Main characters have grown! Back in the days it was uncommon to find "old" characters in main stream games such as Zelda and Pokemon...Now a days, characters have not only grown, but games have become much "darker" than usual! Just look at Pokemon Black and White, a series that usually had young characters now has a grown teen as the protagonist! I want to know your opinion, do you believe this has happened because the game developers have aged, or are they just adapting to the new gamers of today?

Ok im just going to poke a hole in that statement up there.

You compared Nintendo games to Dead Space.

This is a critical error for anyone to make. I dont expect to have to explain why.

Anyway, protagonist ages have largely been irrevelant for the story and theyve been all over the place scince the 90's.

It sort of depends on the game. Some games have taken the darker and grittier approach while others maintained their lighter side.

Younger characters are easier to have as mains because of that whole coming of age thing thats easy as hell to right about and relate to everyone.

Older characters can be more interesting if only the problems characters face were too.

Best game I can think of that uses this is Nier, an older character with some interesting problems (though in Japan he's a teen, I still think its better over here)

See also, TVtropes "American Kirby is Hardcore [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AmericanKirbyIsHardcore]".

Japanese release on left, American on right.

We are being pandered to in terms of "Dark and Gritty" because of the successes of releases, Video Games, Movies or otherwise that were "Dark and Gritty" and it's a consequence of Follow the Leader.

Believe it or not, the average age of someone buying a AAA game is 34. They're going to relate more to someone who already has a career (preferably a cool one like Space Marine, not Space Accountant) and is good at what they do. I'll admit to being over the big three o myself, and I have to say-- I prefer to play characters like Shepherd from Mass Effect than some teen discovering girls and/or guns for the first time.

Well, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough, but I do believe I wrote about Dead Space as the thing that inspirated me to think about this... The real example I gave were the Pokemon and the Zelda games...

Its because they can actually make aged characters now while also not making them look like alien spawn.
You know... I had not thought about it that way! It does make a lot of sense now that you think about it...Very well put!
