I am a victim of mainstream video games. My collection is riddled with titles like Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War, Guitar Hero/Rockband, and the occasional sports game. Theses are not bad games, but i want to play a game that not many people have and i want it to be good. This is a tall order, but i want to stray from the mainstream b/c i despise it in the music world. But maybe these games are mainstream for the sole reason that they are good.

Does anyone else have the same dilemma: wanting to stray from the mainstream, yet realizing the mainstream has many solid franchises?

No, I honestly can't say I have that problem. You see, I play games based on whether they are good, not because of whether they are mainstream etc.

Too me, that sounds just as bad as people who only listen to certain music because it's against 'the man' etc etc etc.

Anyhoo, i'm sure there is a fuckton of games that you will be able to find and I could suggest to you. What do/don't you like?

I don't know what to say. Would you go onto a general music board and ask for recommendations of non mainstream music that you were sure to like? Focus is a bit wide there my friend.

Try Randy Balma: Municipal Abortionist.

If they feel right to you it shouldn't matter. You can always try to broaden your horizon with the more indie and unknown games (which I strongly encourage) but you should be glad that you can also enjoy the more mainstream titles. The more the better, right?

Exactly. Those people are called "hipsters" and are hated by everyone who is not a "hipster".

I play games if I like them.

That's as far as my thoughts go on the subject.

No, I don't have the same problem. I get and play whatever games I want regardless, if they are mainstream or not. Also, you could try playing Beyond Good & Evil.

They can.

If you ask everyone on earth a question, chances are that at least 100,000,000 are going to get it wrong. Plus, people are morons.

I play the whole spectrum, from MW2 to Okami. I just play games I like and never bother whether they are mainstream or not.

Well, I play the PC typically, and if you want to get the full potential of that platform, you kind of have to venture outside the beaten path. However, I would never swear off Mainstream games entirely. 100,000,000 people can't be wrong! Or at least can't be terrible, despicably wrong!

Gaming is about entertainment, who cares what people think, whether you enjoy a mainstream game or something that time/people have forgotten. My tastes run the gamut from Call of Duty to the obscure like still playing X-COM in 2010. :p

Best thing to say, play what you like, don't listen to what others tell you to play, cause if you buy a game based on what someone else tells you and you don't like it, you just wasted money.

It's totally ok if we dislike them though right?

On topic, like I said until we kind of know what games you like it's really quite hard to guess what you may enjoy which is alternative. Though I should point out, alot of the really good games like bioshock etc are mainstream because of them being so good so we have a problem :p

Mainstream doesn't necessarily mean bad. But it would help if you have a few games on the fringe that you can say you enjoy that may not be the most popular so you too can sound like a snobbish "gamer elite"

I'm out of high school, so I tend to not give much of a crap if something (music, movies, games) are mainstream or not, so long as they're quality.

Though with that said, there's a bit of a thrill in introducing other people to something cool and knowing they won't be familiar with it.

You want a cool obscure game though? Go look up Karoshi 2.0 created by the great jesse Venbrux, it's a free download. And one of the cooler games you might ever play.

My collection is not wholly mainstream games, but having mainstream games isn't a bad thing because the reason they are mainstream is due to the fact they are good games overall and lots of people buy them. If they were bad games they wouldn't have sold so many copies and wouldn't be considered to be mainstream.
