Well it was all predicted in George Orwells' 1984. Modern music is actually generated procedurally by computers. They have a library containing a few thousand basic rhythms and melodies, and the computer just stitches them together.

Of course, they can't actually write lyrics yet, that still has to be done by people. But they can make the bass loud enough that you can't hear the lyrics anyway.

(I like some disco, but it certainly wasn't all gold) Eventually people will move on to other musical trends... and just like classic rock, which seemed to be dwindling at the time, good "alt" rock or "indie" or whatever it's calling itself now will be appreciated more.
