Yep, you still don't get to make money off of the work of others. I hope there enough LPers of the type that don't fucking read every bit of text aloud that keep going at it for fun, but I can't say I'm surprised by this at all.
The first part isn't true since publishers get all of the money off of a game dev's hardwork while the latter gets little to none.
What does that matter at all? My crime is okay because I stole from a bad guy? No.

The only lets player I cared about was Cr1TiKaL and its a bit of a shame because he donated all his earnings to charity. At least this won't stop him making videos though.

You do realize that the entire enconomy is built of making money off others work.

Its what tools are. I buy a hammer, nails and wood etc to make a house. I sell that house and make money, the hammer nail etcs are all tools that people put time and effort into designing and making. I then PAYED for those items and used them to make a product which I made money off.

What you should be critical of is when people make money off others without the other being payed, ie copyright infringement. In this case the game devs are actually getting payed twice, the LPer buys the game, AND they cause extra sales.

Of all of this I would simply say that any game company that doesn't want or understand free marketing of their own product is a company that needs to clean house and start retiring their execs. I cannot count the number of games that I've bought and loved as a result of youtube videos, podcasts, and reviews from people who make a living off of being an internet personality. Nowadays I very rarely buy a game without seeing videos featuring actual gameplay, since a lot of trailers are pure cutscene bulls***. I haven't played a Nintendo game since the Gamecube was a new console but after seeing new Super Mario World videos on Youtube I've been seriously considering buying a Wii (and WiiU?) just to get back into some new Nintendo games.

Except it doesn't suck for the few good ones. Why should anyone make money from playing Music? It's ridiculous. It's not even like it's competitive, they are just casually playing music and making silly amounts of money with zero effort.

At least with professional musicians they have to put time in and train with their band and such.

The people who want to produce music simply because they want to do it still will, and the ones that do it just to make money wont. And that's fine with me.
Fixed it so that you can see just how terrible of an argument it is.(will get back to why later)

Look, if you think LP is just as easy as playing a game then get 11 baziltrion yen, then I'm afraid I'm not sure you get why people watch lets plays. People don't watch LP's for the game being played, they watch for the commentary. If you look at any of the top 20... hell 50 Let's play channels, people like Angry Joe, Game Grumps, Nerd3, Total Biscuit, the RoosterTeeth Lets play lads or hell even the so called C word of the Internet; Pewdiepie, just sit there and simply play a game I have to wonder what the hell you do when you play a game? Cus if you play like them then when alone and are randomly shouting while trying to keep them as entertained as possible then I beg of you to seek urgent psychiatric assistance because that is not the norm.

By your logic Guys like Mystery Science theater, Rift Trax, $5 Wrestling, one of the 16774982 Channel Awesome shows or any other "if semi review mostly play by play commentary with jokes of X" deserve to shut down because... wait Not competitive? who cares? Since when is all entertainment bloody competitive... IF people want to watch competative game play they go watch the E sports shows, not lets plays... or any of the other reasons you list.

People watch LP's and other PbPC shows because they are entertained by the people, just like TV chat shows, or stand up or any of the other Real world things that do this, what Jon Stewart does is not that hard apparently, he just talks about whats happening and clips of other peoples shows/Speeches etc etc, tell him that he must do that for free and I'm sure he will agree with you (or try to murder you with a lead pipe, you never know with Stewart.)

And back to the Music thing, the reason I picked music is because that is that is possibly the easiest bloody answer to this, not stupid archaic bloody measures like these. You make a You Tube cover of a band, you sell it on iTunes, you pay a licence fee, how F-ing hard is that?

Here's an idea? Wanna do a Monetized lets play and basically do a shit load of free advertising for us? well We will take say 10%(random number) of the Money you earn from this vid and wont do any Strikes on it.

Oh look! now not only do you have a channel with multi million EXTREMELY focused views of your game but you actually get payed some money for that. Jesus its like 30 bloody Christmases at once for these people. You Tubers get to Keep making money without being choked out by the networks and Companies get to not only make money but save a chunk of money on advertising, hell try to get advertising this focused anywhere else, a game advertised on a channel only people who like games go too, yeah that's like gold dust, try getting 100% product focus on HBO.

Blah its too late for ranting, Sleep.

Wut. ...

No, really, I have started many a post with "Wut". But none deserve it more than this.

WHAT THE FUCK GOOGLE?!? WHAT?

I really enjoy making videos for YouTube. I get a tiny amount of money out of it. I think in my entire YouTube career, I have made 12 dollars. I have 10k views I think, and 100+ videos. I wasn't exactly cutting the big life, but now I can't cut anything at all. For 10k views and 100+ videos to net me 12 dollars, it's now just plain impossible. Most of my videos are various series from games that I now cannot upload. I love uploading my D&D videos, but it seems like they are the only ones I will have left.

I take a lot out of my time to make, produce and upload these videos. I like doing it. It's basically gaming, but on another step. But I don't think people realise exactly how much time it takes. I just went away for a holiday recently, and I was unable to provide any videos. Which meant when I got back, I spent a few days straight just uploading and editing and uploading and editing JUST to build up a back-catelog, so I could make reliable, constant content.

People see it as "Playing games and then diving into your giant pile of cash". It really, really isn't. It is a stressful thing to do, and often will be 5% gaming, 45% editing and 50% uploading. And now all of that has literally NO pay-off, unless I was to be an ass and ask for donations from my tiny audience. I mean... goddamn Google, you are really fucking us from all directions. I will probably end up moving to Blip or this Game Anyone that people are talking about. Maybe even Twitch.

Fuck you Google, and fuck your mutated YouTube. All you are doing is shutting down the tiny people who can't pay for a massive network to protect them. Get fucked.

Damn straight. While we're at it, why don't we cut off the salaries of all those reviewers and critics, too? I mean, jeez, anybody can spew out some words about a game they've played, why should people make money off of it?

Hell, why stop at games? Writers shouldn't make money either! Or musicians, or artists, or scientists, or anybody who doesn't put in a good long day of hard manual labor!

Or you could not be bitter that people are barely making a living off of something you might treat as a hobby, because ad revenue isn't "silly amounts of money" and there is far more than "zero effort" that goes into what people have to put into commentary and editing. Try it yourself, uploading a video per day with consistently funny or informative commentary and a steady stream of progression through whatever game you're showcasing with high quality video and sound capture, because it's a lot harder than people seem to think it is.

Good. PewDiePie is a talentless shmuck who really needs to stop making money for being a waste of organic matter and screaming at the video screen. The fact that he's getting shafted makes me so happy. I really hope he quits making videos.

Also, there's nothing really wrong with this. I never understood why people enjoyed watching other people play the video game for them anyway, and the videos themselves can still exist it just won't be a freaking market.
"I personally don't enjoy it, therefore no one should".

This is exactly what you're saying. Pardon me if I think that your opinion is entirely scrappable.
"His opinion opposes mine, therefore it is entirely scrappable."

This is exactly what you're saying. Pardon me if I think that your opinion of my opinion is entirely scrappable.
Touche.

I would still LOVE to see you justify your opinion as the glorious one that all should bow to, seeing how you have the option of "just don't freaking watch PewDiePie".

When said hobby cuts deeply into my time to the point that I can't hold a full-time job at the same time? Yes.
Wait, what!?

Does the word "priorities" mean anything to you? My full time job cuts massively into my hobby time. What do I do? I suck it up, make what time I can for my hobbies, and pay my rent from the money I earn from actual work. If your hobby means that you can't keep a job, you need to rethink a few things.
We're all benefiting from their hobby, though. The "me" in my statement above was supposed to be from the POV of an LPer. I watch people like theRPGMinx, who put a lot of time into their LPs, and they make me happy and entertain me. Some others I've watched and enjoyed clearly required more time to make than balancing with a 9-5 job would allow.

The point is, if we want them to continue, then YES, they need to be paid for what they do. Their hobby would need to become their job.

Ergo, if they can't make any money from it, we will no longer have these high-quality LPs to watch.

That's all I was getting at.

Oh, good. And here I was just the other day, thinking there was just too many ways for people who love games to make a living. Thank god they're nipping this one in the bud, can you IMAGINE how much free advertising these companies are getting daily from LPs? Ugh, I shudder to think of it.

Let's Players provide a service. To us, and to the companies who make these games- no one is losing anything, everyone is winning. And that's just terrible.

I'm really, really trying to be objective and fair here. My instinct is to side with the LPers because they're basically me - gamers. And the way the current system is, LPs get games exposure, in some cases specifically games that are little known or indie titles, and that both strengthens the community and encourages watchers to buy it. However, the company has made a product, and while I think the user should be able to do with it what they want, it is fair enough that the user not make money off that without paying the company if that's what the company wants.

I repeat, I think LPing is an unquestionably good thing for a game, and I think revenue being generated from ads, not the selling of the game content itself, is neither here nor there. But if a company is stupid enough to decline that free publicity and advertising then maybe they should be allowed to. I can't see indie developers having such qualms.
It's unfortunate that I also see it from this perspective. I mean, this is a business in a way, no matter how you look at it. Making money off of other people's efforts is what it boils down to. I did plan on making a YouTube channel in the future. I guess I'll just make it a bit more like AlphaOmegaSin's channel, rather than something like The Angry Joe Show. I don't plan on making money, but if possible, I hope this doesn't ruin any hope that I can.

Dammit YouTube, why do you have to keep screwing with us? Although there wouldn't be Partnerships, something makes me wish YouTube wasn't sold over to Google. At the same time though... I don't think it'd be where it is without that happening. Take it as a good or bad thing, depending on the small things you pay attention to.

No. It's an analogy using the basics of your argument. If you'd like to be literal then please explain what the publisher/developer relationship has to do with this subject.

In the case of your house, every item you used you had a right to use in that manner. In the case of a videogame, you don't have a right to post videos featuring large chunks of the game if you're not reviewing or parodying it and then monetize. You'll notice this is the case because google and the publishers are putting a stop to it.

Lets Plays are great from a wiki point of view, they allow you to go back to a mission and work out who said what and what hppened. When I ran a certain wiki I used to frequent a certain Mr Hall's lets plays everyday!

The videos Iwatched were of games that I already owned, it was just quicker and easier than booting up the playstation and try to play the game at the same time as writing an article about it.

Goggle, this idea sucks!

It's about corporate greed, and that's the only reason for doing it. They will try to spin it so it seems reasonable but we can all see through it. Basically the publishers have seen the revenue that people doing let's plays can get and they have decided that they want in. So yeah you are right.

I wouldn't worry too much though, I'll all fall through when all the big name Lets Play people inevitably move to another service provided that's not quite so draconian. It cold even be the beginning of the end for you tube...a hell of a lot of the traffic on that site is related to gaming after all, lose that revenue stream and we could be seeing youtube heading the way of myspace or livejournal.

But the LP's are making money out of someone elses property. I'm pretty sure ost EULA's state that a game can't be used for personal profit. Shouldn't the LP's pay some royalties to the owner of the game? As we all know, when you purchase a disk/digital copy of a game you're purchasing the license to play it. Same with a film or album.

The game doesn't become your property. Similar to the pre-owned game market. Publishers introduced online passes to ensure they were being paid for people using their games. While I never liked it I most certainly didn't disagree with it. Why should anyone get to use an online service that they haven't paid to help maintain?

EDIT: Try yet another perspective. Dave has worked his arse off. Dave finished some project that'll make his own and Jane's life easier increasing both of their productivity. Jane takese credit then gets a pay rise.

Dave's life has been made easier which is nice but no pay rise. Jane is reaping the financial reward from Dave's work. Why didn't Dave get a raise? Jane has done nothing to earn it other than use Dave's idea.

Incase people can't wrap their head around this....
Dave = Game's Publishers
Jane = LP's
Idea = Game

Well crap. There goes my regular entertainment. This is basically going to lay off so many people. This really sucks.

Worse than SOPA. Now Youtubes going to go back to being just random dude15's posting half of a video then quitting, using horrible quality mics and randomly screaming. ugh, if you remember the youtube I'm talking about...

In response to this gamers need to make their own streaming video website. Fucking google, man. Once companies get big enough they just become soulless.

^ To above poster, yeah whatever. Gameplay is completely different from music and movies. Youtubers WERE paying royalties by garnering advertising and sales. Minecraft never would have happened without youtube. That said, watching a video of someone playing a game doesn't diminish your desire to buy and play the game yourself, if anything it promotes interest.

It's going to hurt quite a few of the smaller LPers who are trying to get their channels established, even some of the bigger channels are going to end up downscaled I think a lot of them will move to other sites and smaller ones will stop.

My girlfriend and I always look up let's play videos before we buy a game to judge whether or not it's worth our money. If those companies don't want our money then we can find someone else who does. It's as simple as that. Just don't come around bitching about how unprofitable you are.

If you want to do Let's Plays stick with indie games. They are overjoyed to have the exposure and sales.

Sounds like Youtube is slowly becoming more and more of a corporate whore. It's time for a new video streaming site to rise up.

Now then, a little conversation between us forum posters:

1: What do you think of this sudden change happening next year?

2: Are you worried about your favorite Let's Player's future?

3: Do You Think This should have happened a long time ago, and are proud of Youtube's Decision?

4: Anyone think that Video Game Crash is going to happen due to this being one of the factors?

5: Which Let's Players do you think would be fine with this outcome? Which ones do you think would not be?

6: Freestlye Final Thoughts - Your take on this with a good conclusion?
===================================================================
You may now post.
1: Sudden? This has already been happening. It's just swinging into a more ... full effect next year.

2: I hate Let's Plays. I hate Let's Players. I haven't watched a single video all the way through. I gave 2 best friends play a chance, but fuck was that a mistake. As bad as PewDie. I'll never see the wonder and joy a bunch of others do in watching someone else play a game. And the fact that these gits are basically getting paid to play video games without officially being a play tester, I'm all for taking money outta their pocket. If they're serious about their dedication and love for games, they'll continue to do it for free. The ones that start crying are the ones that were only in it for money.

3: Like I said, it's already happened. Am I proud of it? Well, yes and no. Yes because it's the right idea, no because Youtube will probably get too carried away and go over the gorram hedge.

4: This may possibly CONTRIBUTE to the video game crash, but this being a primary factor? That'd be even more hilarious. If a primary factor, then the VG industry deserves to crash even more. No, what will be the cause for the VG crash, I believe will be these companies running THEMSELVES into the ground. Trivial console wars, unfinished products (both in consoles and the games themselves, see: EA) and all around poor, repetitive quality games (see: spunk-gargle-weewee). It wont matter when the spunk-gargle-weewee genre's flame finally flickers, there will always be another go-to genre to become the new spunk-gargle-weewee.

5: Could never answer in a million years if I tried. Nor do I care.

6: Final thought? Hooray. Less money for let's players. Hopefully a lot of 'em will go away and do something more productive. Or at least, get paid doing something that's worth being paid for.
