Major minecraft fails

I've recently started checking out the nether, and I thought I'd make use of the fast travel by travelling far in, building a portal and making my way back home.
Unfortunately I tried to do this with buckets of lava, and a bucket of water, not knowing that water evaporates down there -.-

So now I have to try and find my home portal. FML

Anybody else got stories of Minecraft failures?
