Make a game with layers...

Some games possess different layers. Areas with different styles of gameplay, designed to simulate diffing skills required to accomplish certain tasks. For example, Imperium Galactica 2. On top, you have the galaxy map - a political strategy involving the colonization and management of your worlds. At the slightly closer level, you have a space-battle situation requiring a whole different kind of management of individual units, in three dimensions. Lastly, a good-old C&C style RTS when you attack planet surfaces with troops.

Or another, with only two layers - Battlezone 2. On top, there's an RTS system for constructing bases, and an FPS/vehicle driving shooter down below for when you fancy taking it to those alien scum. This all got me thinking - a lot of my "ideal games" ideas could be summed up in terms of mixtures of different games at various levels, to create an entire new concept.

For example, one I've been mulling over for years has three layers.
Top: Pan-galactic strategy, along the lines of Master of Orion or Star Wars: Rebellion
Middle: Ship-to-ship combat, directly controlled. Something like Bridge Commander, or Starfleet Command.
Bottom: First person shooter, for boarding enemy spacecraft, or assaulting planetary bases.

So, what aspects of games would *you* combine to make something better than the sum of its parts?

Well even though I might get hated a little but Brutal Legend has 2 layers of gameplay A 3rd person hack and Slash and normal RTS in one When you Fly over the battlefield.

it was a interesting concept for me to play around with. but Shame that the AI sucked and never was a Real Challenge lol

now for me and my Made up game

Bottom The Hack and Slash of Dynasty Warriors
Middle The Squad Command of Dawn of war
Top the Satellite View from Supreme commander

Shame i thought this thread was about double layering discs in the future, but yeah, most of my favourite games have many gameplay styles.

Crash Bandicoot 3 had vehicle shooting, platforming, side scrolling, other games like Star Wars battlefront 2 had a variety of gameplay styles such as

Third/First perosn shooting
Vehicle combat
Space Combat.

SW: Battlefront had those kind of layers......sort of. There was a galactic map. There were ship battles. And obviously there was a lot of FPS play going on.
