I just came across this article [http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53976] on Shacknews according to the article ID's John Carmack revealed that Rage won't look as good on the 360 because of the compression required to fit the game onto two DVD's. Furthermore the reason they are going with two DVD's rather than three is related to royalty fees which would make a third DVD economically unjustifiable. If this is indeed the case (I can't confirm from the article because there does not seem to be a link to what he actually said.) I cannot help but be reminded of UTIII and the issue of mods on the 360. I also wonder what kinds of issues other developers have run into with this console when it comes to fitting content onto the discs that they do not talk about, because I seriously doubt that ID is the only company to have issues fitting game assets onto the 360 discs.

I am also left wondering why the hell Carmack even said that (If in fact he did.) wouldn't it be better to just let the 360 version of the game quietly die like the Saints Row team did for the first game?

Well, this does show that the 360 is begining to show its limits.

I remember on a demo of Fallout 3, the person said "We're really pushing the 360s hardware in this game" but wether he meant that as a good thing or a bad thing is still up in the air.

So until the 360 comes out with a "Yelw-Beem" add-on attachment to the 360, it's going to start showing it's age.

As for why he said this, I don't know, it's a pretty stupid statement to say publicly.

That guys a fucking idiot, He claims the 360 is technologically supiorer then he hammers on saying the ps3 is future proof then he just bashes its design saying its harder to program for which is stupid because devolpers like him don't like changing the formula.

I will get it for PC, anyways. If two 8800GTs in SLI can't crank it out right now *stares a Crysis* then the developer has issues. I have spent $450 on GFX technology, I think there is a point where you should realize that people like myself are a minority. So who is this amazing engine for? I can only assume the future since you have 2 consoles, each with downsides, and a PC market they probably won't optimize for which will suffer another Crysis, IE great game we can't enjoy the true potential of for years to come.

Thanks id.

I don't get that either, I would guess that he means that Id prefers to work with the 360 because it is more like what they are used to, which is perfectly fine. But some of the quotes in the second article make it sound like Carmack just got a pie in the face because the CELL's streaming capabilities would have been able to help out the 360 and he criticized that aspect of the processor in the past.

I honestly hope the Tech 5 engine takes off I am kind of tired of UE3 because so many games seem to look the same or have simillar problems like noticeable pop in.

i honestly think that ID is just saying this in order to get MS to wave or reduce the cost on the DVD royalties. the issue probably isn't as bad as they are saying and in reality it's probably just a 2 disc issue and ID just doesn't want to pay for the royalties on the 2nd disc.

I've thought of that too, seems like a ham handed way to do it though.

hey, when you decide to setup atonymous publisher relationships where you handle your own PR "professional courtesy" might not be the flavor of the day.

Ball: True, though I have to admit that the fanboy flame wars this ignited are absolutely hillarious.
