Making GIFs

I've always wanted to learn how to make a GIFs, but have had a tough time learning how, and seeing how a ton of escapists have them as their avatars I'd thought I'd ask.

How do you make them?

Do I need special programs (ie photoshop, etc...)?

Any help would be great!

I use GIMP, which is basically a free version of Photoshop (£800 for Photoshop and some little addons? I think not).
Apart from that, I can't really help >.>

you can create a gif in a number of programs although i tend to use adobe flash or adobe photoshop i think there are free programs online that will let you make gifs

I use Flash but it's obviously not the best for it, it's just I understand the software already so don't see why not.

Lets hope you never have to use 3d Studio Max lol. It might just kill you. Admittedly you could just get animation master which is the same program but a lot cheaper.

OT: Yeah just go with GIMP. Can't get much better than free and simple.

I used a site to make mine, although mien is only a few frames long, so it was simple to make. Try searching in google; "free online animated gif"

You need more than GIMP, you will need a good video downloader and a video to .jpg converter, or you can use gifsoup.com.
