Male Ponytails?

My question, dear male Escapees, is how someone would be received in your area/home/country/city if they did the same?

I've lived in a few countries and wore long hair since I could grow it out; I've had many a strange experience with it...

I've been asked for pot off the street, called a lesbian, mistaken from a women from behind, called a hippie, been asked to touch it, been asked to play with it, people have expressed their jealousy of it, suggested I donate it to charity, offered $200 to cut it off, questioned whether or not I could do my job, said it suited me, asked if they could style it, said I could do anything because of it, called an 80's movie bad guy, turned down because of it, been called a great lover for it and many a continued off color comment by random strangers.

So... your experience may vary. I'm sticking with mine.

No one would care. It's fairly common in Sweden due to our high number of metalheads. Apparently I'm pretty well known in my town for my hair.
Personally I'm not fond of ponytails on men. Fits on some people, especially along with some facial hair, but the greasy hair ponytail is just disgusting. Keep it clean and release your hair! Swing it in the faces of balding men! Watch their eyes fill with tears!

unless your a biker or a wrestler it looks kinda stupid and dirty in my opinion especially if your older or out of shape.
But really around here some people do it and nobody really thinks its a big deal.

I'm from central Florida, which is fairly moderate in sociopolitical terms and one of the most diverse parts of the country. The only people who would be offended would be a few old ultra-conservative types with nothing better to complain about.

I dunno, people do it... I personally think it looks awful on men.

You need pretty thick hair to pull it off (nothing worse than long hair that ends in a sad thin rat tail when it's gathered up, on a man or woman) and I personally have a rule that men are only allowed to wear long hair if they also wear a beard.

But, obviously, it's your life.

Why? I dunno. I don't like people touching my hair, so I never let anyone touch it unless absolutely necessary. That means no cutting it unless I get awful split-ends. Then I will get it trimmed.

Also, every hairdresser that I've ever been to complimented my thick, strong, curly hair. I guess that's influenced me to keep it long, too.

My experiences have been the same as this.
I have had long hair since before pretty much all my current friends knew me, so if I cut my hair they probably wouldn't recognise me. I have only ever had bad comments from guys about my hair, saying I look gay, like a women etc, where as women have always complimented me on it and said it suits me. I live in Australia btw.

I live near a Native American reservation. Twin braids are very common, and no one would even blink at a ponytail unless it was done up with a pink bow or something.

I used to have one in my teens, but swapped out for a grade two shave in my early twenties. There's nothing wrong with them, but as the old saying goes: under every tail you find an arse.

I don't like them, personally. On the other hand, I'm not fond of long hair on men in general. Looks unkempt, unprofessional. Not my thing.

You are likely to get a bit of grief depending on where you live, but not that much. If you want to go for it if you decide for whatever reason its not for you you can always cut it.

Ponytail alone won't really do much of a difference around where I live. If you show up with a ponytail nobody will really care, you might get a few remarks from people trying to be funny if you don't normally have a ponytail, but that's about it I'd say. They key is really how the ponytail fits with your overall look.

Best way to complement a ponytail is to be Steven Seagal, really.

I have a really long pony-tail, one that easily reaches the lower portion of my back when its tied up.

No one really says anything, and I don't think its that uncommon. Maybe in other places in the US is uncommon and looked down upon, but here its just another sight.

I feel that it's more girlish to let your hair run wild than to bunch it up. If your hair is long enough to be in a pony tail, anyway. Just... make sure it's not formed a noticeable distance away from your neck.

American Male and I've been growing my hair out since 2003 or 2004...Probably 2004. Anyway, it's uncommon for the most part but it doesn't get me any funny looks. When I was still in high school I was mistaken for a woman multiple times but that if that's the absolute low point then it's worth it for all the money you're going to save on hair-cuts.

my brother has a ponytail. but, he has an art degree. I think it's mandatory to have one at that point.

I think ponytails are fine with a form of facial hair, only reason I think that way is my dad has a ponytail/long hair and I think it looked better when he had a goatee (he shaved it off recently).

Also, facial hair w/ ponytail means situations where people think your're female are made less awkward as the facial hair add manliness.

Otherwise I think ponytails are pretty much accepted where I live (suburbs of London), I noticed that long hair became more popular as I went through secondary school/sixth form.

This. Don't go for full beards or thick 'staches, it looks silly, especially if you're skinny.

I'm 21 and have a tail which I keep bent under my band, so no tail wagging. Haven't gotten more/less funny looks since and as long as you keep it clean and tidy you shouldn't have a problem.

ponytails on men are so not sexy but each to their own i suppose if you want to be one of those long hair dole bludgeing types who eat strange foreign often vegetarian foods stick it to all those people who frown on it

The only dudes with ponytails I've ever seen have either been hipsters, retired hippies, old guys (like my dad) and... well, egon

I think its a haircut for an older person or a person with a very particular personality (like artists and such), but its your hair.

Really though, no-one cares (Sydney, Australia). Some people probably think it's girly, but no-one says anything. There was one Lebanese lowlife who decided to pick a fight and briefly mentioned it, but idiots don't count. It's really just a convenient way to keep my hair out of eyes and out of whatever I try to eat.
