I want to warn all you escapists out there about a Trojan Malware that's going around. It's called "AntiSpyware Soft" and is a ***** to remove once it's inserted itself into your computer.

I've caught this bugger twice on my laptop, so now I'm typing from one of my library's computers. This thing will:

-Block your web access to all but it's scam site(and it will even do this for a bit AFTER it's gone, if you can get rid of it with anything short of a sledgehammer)

-Pop up annoying messages saying your computer is infected in impossible areas(like the task manager) with stupid virus names like "BankFox.A"

-Pester the hell out of you until you give in and buy it (DON'T)

-And, in a rather amusing instance, it gets desperate and opens up your browser to a fake adult site.

I removed it with Windows defender the first time, but now it can't detect it.

Just a warning to all of you.

Also, this only gets installed if you're using Internet Explorer, so screw that and get chrome or Firefox or something.

It'd be a bit better to know just exactly how you got this, but it's good to know. I use Chrome, so I'm safe. Thanks for the heads up!

Yea, that happened to me.
All I had to do was go into Safe-Mode and system restore to a month ago, it was pretty easy to remove.

And also, I was using Firefox, so it's not JUST Internet Explorer, it's Firefox as well.

I guess I'm safe then, I have Chrome.

Thanks for the heads up though.

Ouch, well good luck getting rid of it. Thankfully I'm pretty paranoid when it comes to my computers safety... Better scan again, just to be sure.

Woo, downloading Chrome was a great move then.

But thanks for the heads up.

Next time, put something like "Escapist PSA-" at the begining of the title. For no real reason other than sounding cool...

OT but, that is an interesting piece of malware, gaining some sort of intellegence that knows when its time is up. How does it get itself in the computer and such? (creating discussion value)

Ah, a rogue anti-spyware program. These things are pretty common. Best defense is a good anti-spyware program, and being sure of what you are downloading. FYI -- a regular anti-virus program won't cut it. You need one that's specifically aimed at spyware, such as Superantispyware or Spybot. I've never heard of someone getting one just from surfing, though. Usually what happens is the user will find a website through google which has a fake Windows Defender window inside, claiming that the computer is infected with viruses. When you click the button to remove the viruses, it actually starts a download window, which then installs the actual malware. I've never actually had to remove one, but I've heard they can be a pain to get rid of.

Thanks for the warning but I got it just over a week ago and it was the most annoying thing ever, lost everything on my computer just to get rid of it.

If you guys aren't already using firefox with an add-on called noscript... http://noscript.net/

You should be. You have to learn how to enable scripts from trusted sites, which sites are relevant, etc. But with that- if you get a virus, it's your fault for allowing the wrong script, not because you stumbled onto a virus infested page. You have to allow that page permissions first.

Really neat program that you can adjust on the fly. Haven't gotten an infection since I started using it.

I caught this on my sister's laptop a few weeks ago, and it got straight into my girlfriend's laptop through MSN. It's a ***** to destroy, it really is.

I've been using it since late 90' versions and guess what: it works.
