-Intro-
John-Hello,I am John Fsjal,founder of Fortress Managment.
Shoop-And I am ShoopDaToaster,friend of John's.
John-And since buisness has been slow here in Antartica-
Shoop-Not to mention,cold,dark,and lonely.
John-As I was saying,we have a lot of free time on our hands,and are avid gamers,we decided to create our own seview series.And the name of that is Managment Reviews.
Shoop-Real creative.
John-Indeed.And onto the review.
-Review-
John-Today we are reviewing a new,FREE game just released by Valve on the Steam client.
Shoop-The master game developer
John-Yes,and Gabe Newell or whoever runs Valve,hired the people who did Left 4 Dead,and a few modders and whatnot,and told the buggers to work together and make a game.
Shoop-And then *INSERT TIME HERE* passed,and Alien Swarm was born into the gaming world.
John-And what a day it was.In fact,the first day Alien Swarm was launched,and with it being free,almost EVERYONE on Steam was downloading it,the servers crashed and if you managed to start up the game,it would lag quite a lot.
Shoop-Should we get onto the game review now?
John-Thats just what I was about to do.Now,Alien Swarm is a 4 player co-op 3rd person top-up shooter.
Shoop-Sounds familiar,eh?
John-And with being made by the L4D team,it shows. Having 4 player co-op,being a mainly survival game,etc.It could basically be summed up as Left 4 Dead Aliens;but what makes this game diffret is some slight rpg-ish elements.It has a experience system based on what you did in the round you just played,with a new item every level,from shotguns,to Flamethrowers or a Mining Laser.The weapons are hard to choose from,the early weapons are pretty bad until you unlock the...TESLA CANNON!The tesla cannon is the usual top-tier weapon,with just 10 bullets in each clip,each lazer/stream/beam uses up 1 ammo only every 1/2 a second,and connects to enemies close to your victim,and then it slows them and keeps shocking them,leading to their eventual death.And it does not hit your teammates.
Shoop-Talk about the game,not your individual achivments.
John-I am.Ahem.There is 1 campaign so far with 7 levels in it.(so far.)
The only way to play to gain experience is online(no bots). This has the usual online gaming problems,lag,annyoing players,elitists,etc.
The levels are allright,exept for that most of the levels require someone to have something,
I believe all the levels require a Tech marine,and some requires weapons,or items.
Otherwise the levels are well played out and rather ambient.
The players are rather bland,all they give is a diffrent suit model and a small bio about the character.Also,another person is the pilot that dropped you off at the place in his low rida spaceship and by the look of it,with him being able to see you and actually coming up and helping you in one level,why couldn't he have done this in the first place?Just come along and shoot the aliens,blow up things,it would have been much easier.But then again,whats a usual plot hole.
The aliens are less varied than L4D(2),you mostly fight the common alien,just 2 legs with in the front of the body,there are 4 clay antannae.There's a less common kind with a oranger coloration and some spike-hair,which seems to be able to ram into you.And there's a sheilded one,a quadpedal thing carrying a ballsack filled with explosive (pellets?) it shoots around(it's called a boomer.).and some kind of explosive shooting alien.None of them are very hard to kill,despite the sheilded one.But mostly,you'll see the common and spiky one.
The gameplay is pretty good,despite that with some weapons it's hard to aim,its a game where you and your teamates each need to actually need to cotribute,ot just stay back and take all the items.In fact,there are not many items given in the game,maybe a ammo pack or two and a mission-critical item is usual.
Overall,it's a fun top down rpg-shooter to play with friends. It's a bit harder than L4D(2),but well,it's free!
