Mandatory internet blocking

Its an issue that is starting to become big down here in Australia, but the government are trialling a 'mandatory' internet filter which will block certain sites regardless of your preferences. They say that the they will only block sites deemed too inappropriate for children but eventually they will start to block websites unjustly (coming from a student who has to use school provided internet that has blocked everything, including education sites). The main problem is that it may block certain games for being deemed too violent for young kids.

So the essential question is, what is your opinion on this?
and add anything on this if needed.

It's censorship, which I am 100% against in all circumstances. People need to take responsibility for themselves and their children instead of expecting there to never be anything objectionable to ever exist.

It can't really stop people doing the wrong thing so its going to be a costly waste of time.
What I dislike most is the fact they will not say what is banned, so its all a bit shady even if the power isn't abused.

dude, they trialled this thing last year and it received extremely negative feedback from everyone, gamers, internet browsing people and the three major ISP's in Australia. all of them hated it. it slowed down the internet and was generally ineffective. this is really old news man.

REALLY OLD NEWS really fucking old news, this is like late last year old. they aren't starting it up again, Bigpond, iinet and Internode (the big three ISP's) all hated the trials.

This exactly. The plan still exists, but it relies on the cooporation of the relevant ISPs. When your major ISPs reject the plan, even if it happens the effect will be miniscule.

But I'm still against the idea as a concept anyway. It's blatant censorship, and will serve no purpose other than to slow the internet connections of eveybody. Like with all censorship, people eventually find a way around it.

The government is desperately trying to convince the public they are worth having around, and as they're too incompetent to do anything real they are making up threats and pretending to go through how various options of how best to deal with them. They know as well as anyone that if they try and censor the internet there will be blood on the steps of parliment.

The Australian government can trial it as much as they like, but if I understand correctly, they're going to have a very hard time getting the legislation actually passed in parliament as they simply do not have enough support.
