what is this the 90's? i thought kids were done complaining about that. just man up, although i do agree with candid117 both about making a poor choice and about your poor attitude. i was (and still am) a nerdy skrawny kid in highschool, look at it as a chance to build some muscle and not be a little guy anymore. having a poor attitude about it will only make it worse.
I don't mind working out. I don't. I actually enjoy it. I go to my local gym now and again and run on the tredmil for HOURS. Plus, i'm not much for sports. I just never got into it. (Although hockey is pretty invigorating) So, I just don't need lump heads that have been doing drugs, impregnating girls, and just being stupid around me. I don't mind people, just those types.
That statement is pissing me off. The Goth kids were doing way more drugs then any of the Jocks in my school and that's a huge assumption I liked gym and I did wrestling in high school and never did drugs or had sex. Also if it's a mandatory class how is there going to be more jocks then in other mandatory classes.

If you have a slender build treadmill running isn't the most helpful exercise, it helps you burn fat but doesn't build much muscle, sure if you're slender you'll always be slender, for the most part, but that doesn't mean you can't have defined muscles.

I see no reason to get rid of PE, I see a lot of kids that wouldn't exercise without it and I don't see how an extra hour of exercise is going to hurt anyone. And for the it doesn't help you in life argument, I'm pretty sure being healthy does help you in life. Being healthy allows you to more easily deal with taxing jobs like factory work or being a waiter, also lots of job do focus on health and high school is about exposing us to multiple types of skills helping us decide what we want later and to make us well rounded people. And it always help to be in decent health.

Didn't mean to make you pissy sir, down in Missouri, the common male IS the inpregnating, drug using, idiot. IT's a very common stereotype because we are classified as one of them HICK STATES. So I didn't mean to affend you if I did.

You picked what sounds like weight training to avoid the "Neanderthals?" Thats the class where the football coach is the teacher and half the class is going to be his player maintaining their build. Way to go buddy. I guess you deserve it though for being so dismissive and smug towards others.
hush, I agree with OP, the majority those dumbfucks in the weight classes are neanderthals that have no competent thoughts whatsoever.

OT: In the US, at least in the Ohio region, PE is a ridiculously easy, I hardly break a sweat. I run cross country, so I can run 5 to 10 miles a day with no problem, and that's what keeps me in shape. I believe the PE system needs to be revised to make the actual physical aspect more intense, and make it mandatory, the parents be damned. The one thing that is lacking is our generations work ethic, my classmates are so damn lazy, and think they are entitled to do as they feel: Not give a shit about gym class and just walk.

People just suck.

The things that characterized P.E. for me were being made fun of all the time for not being athletic and having someone break my collarbone in a basketball game.

It's a load of crap.

Here's some data from the CDC regarding obesity rates according to age group: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm
As you can see, the rate drops by 2% for the "high school age" demographic compared to childhood. However, this basically doubles for adults over the age of 20, which indicates that any mitigating effect in high school was lost. Furthermore, another 34% are overweight, which means we are now at 68% of the adult population being above a healthy weight. There is no way one can make any convincing argument that PE in high school helps stop obesity, as the increased trend from childhood continues into adulthood (shit, even the doubling trend continues!). If anything, I would attribute the slight decrease in adolescents to peer-pressure, but I can't find any data to back that up. Yet.

Now let's examine adolescents individually. Here's another study: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hestat/obesity_child_07_08/obesity_child_07_08.pdf (interesting data is on the last page)
What we find is that obesity rates have increased over time, and that more males tend to be obese compared to females of the same ethnicity, save for African-Americans. Given that that sports and PE in general are geared more towards males, this would indicate that such programs have no statistically significant effect, although attributing the on average lower obesity rates of females to peer-pressure is once again a viable, although not yet statistically backed up alternative. What I see as a more likely explanation is the income discrepancy of the ethnicity compared. Here's the average income by ethnicity from 2005, which will suffice for a topical comparison: http://factfinder.census.gov/jsp/saff/SAFFInfo.jsp?_pageId=tp6_income_employment. What we see is that of the three groups compared, whites make by far the most (go figure...), whereas blacks and Hispanics only make about 60% of that income. While Hispanics have a slightly higher average income, they also have *on average* larger families (http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/aer731/aer731d.pdf), which leads to n overall lesser income per family member. Given that fast-food is on average the cheapest meal option (here's a fun article showing $/calorie of some fast food items: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SmartSpending/ConsumerActionGuide/wallet-vs-waist-fast-food-cost-per-calorie.aspx), it is reasonable to assume that households with the lowest income per family member are more prone to eating the cheap but fattening fast food. This type of behavior continues on into adulthood, where it then impacts the next generation. There, that seems the most likely explanation for why obesity is so prevalent in the US.

Want to alleviate the problem? Replace sodas in school vending machines with water/sugar free tea/diet-sodas, make school lunches healthier, do not have those stupid snack vending machines, and have some real fucking nutrition lessons in that otherwise completely worthless "health" class. The claim that PE helps solve the problem is not backed up by statistics. On that note, the education system here is shitty enough. Might as well replace that PE stuff with some mandatory "how not to be a worthless idiot" course.

This little rant was written by a 179cm and 68kg white guy and recent college graduate who is in better shape than some athletes out there. How you may ask? About three hours per week working out (running/biking), and a dozen sit-ups/push-ups in the morning and evening. Oh, and healthy eating, but that vegetarian thing ain't for everybody it seems...

I know our PE was like a fucking slaughter house.
There wouldn't be a class someone didn't break something, sprain and ankle or wrist, or start bleeding for some reason. I couldn't wait to get out of there, the worst I got was a baseball in the nose.

I don't get why people don't like PE, playing football ( or soccer for you americans ) is awesome and since that's what we did during 75% of PE lessons ( from the start of school, until the snow was too thick to play in then when the snow melted till the end of school ) PE was one of my favourite lessons.

I hated PE, but I knew it was good for me. It was the only thing keeping me from going from overweight to obese and I know that 'cause when I didn't have to take it anymore I gained a ton of weight and also ended up with high blood pressure. It has taken me over three years to get myself close to being at a healthy weight.

Looking back I wish I tried harder and maybe even joined a sport(freshmen year my PE coach wanted me to try out for Football and I said no). In my district it was mandatory for 2 years in High School and nowadays I wish it had been mandatory for all 4 years as it would have made my life much easier than the last few years have been.
In my school ROTC was considered a PE class, so I ended up taking a PE class every semester of all four years of High School. I could have taken the extra class period off, but I stayed in and was healthier for it. I also find myself wishing I had played football or something while I was in high school. Only 8 years too late...

Eh, I think that school level PE should focus on developing just basic physical skills, like balance and a good degree of active flexibility. It just makes everyone a little bit safer and increases your chance of avoiding injuries.
Really just body weight exercises, light plyometrics, joint strengthening, and coordination practice like standing on Bozu Balls or walking Balance Beams.
Beyond that, we should also put an emphasis on gymnastic inspired training. You'd be surprised what you can do with rings and uneven bars, without doing any flips.

Well for the first two years of high school I had a legitimate medical issue which prevented me from doing any PE. It was nothing physical, it was internal medicine related. Anyway. It was resolved after those two years and I was kind of a heavy kid... But I neglected to tell the Head of PE that it had been resolved. So for five years my PE lessons were spent chilling out. The reason being I had a bit of a problem with authority. The authority being a sadistic bastard that thought he could tell me when and where to exercise and how worthless overweight people were. I exercised in my own time at my convenience.

You see the thing I hated the most about PE is the fucking sense of superiority it gave everyone who was athletic and the hyper-macho attitude that accompanied the borderline psychotic PE staff. And when every other kid there looked down their nose at me for not kicking a ball into a net, the staff did nothing and further enforced the view everyone there had that overweight people were somehow sub-human.

Fuck PE.

Mandatory PE I don't mind. Hell, weight-training and cardio are pretty fun, if not quite obviously exhaustive and demanding. In Britain - or, at any rate, in British public schools - we have mandatory sports.

So, if by age 11, you don't have a comprehensive knowledge of and adequate skill in Rugby and/or Football, say goodbye to any lingering sense of dignity or pride you might have for four hours a week. Cause they will eat you alive.

I should know. I just crawled out the other end.

Hmm ... When I lived in London (roughly GCSE age or so), PE rotated sports - we did baseball, cricket, football, rugby, badminton, track & field, swimming, netball, volleyball, basketball, and hockey. When I lived near Sydney (the rest of my educational years), we did basketball. Nothing but goddamn basketball.

I HATE basketball with a passion now. I hate the feel of the ball, I hate the obnoxious noise of bouncing and sneakers squeaking, I hate dickheads trying to slam dunk, I hate the morons who acted like tough-as-nails gangstas - when they were playing a fucking NON-CONTACT sport. It was just a lot of upper-middle class white Australians posing. Shiiiit.

But srsly, give the kids a wide variety of sports to try. Students will, like me, get the shits if you just play the same damned sports all the damned time. PE is important; teenagers need to practice with their bodies. One of the reasons adults can't run and jump and be as nimble as when they were kids is because their brain hasn't done it *since* they were kids - your body has changed size and shape, and your brain, put simply, doesn't know how to control it anymore.

I honestly don't see the problem with mandatory PE. I think it's good to break up hours of sitting with some forced "get up and move around", especially for younger children. It dovetails nicely with Sex Ed. and other "Health" classes.

I'm about as skinny as they come, even now. I was an awkward mess in highschool, but I didn't have any problems in PE except tardiness.

And pneumonia apparently.

I managed to skip pretty much all school PE on a long-running health problem, but prior to that, i hated it, my teacher was an evil, sadistic monster, and im glad i got so many health problems just in time.

I understand. Fuck, next year I have to take PE as well. Last year I had to take Health, which is basically "No drugs, no alcohol, keep your body in check, etc.". I never minded PE in Elementary/Middle School. And I'm (And was) like twenty pounds overweight. PE did nothing for me. I tried my damned hardest and that's all that counted. Just try to keep up.

I wouldn't mind PE if it didn't suck. In my highschool, our PE class could be summed up as... well, let me just describe it.

A few push ups and sit ups a day, then going outside and running 3 laps of the track (running around inside at winter). All this took maybe 10-15 minutes. That was followed by 40+ minutes of playing basketball. Don't like basketball? Sucks. Aren't very good at basketball? The guys playing don't let you play with them. I hope you like sitting on the sideline or bouncing a ball against a wall for the better part of an hour. That is, if you can find a wall to use where you won't be in the way of all the jocks playing basketball.

When I played with them, I was very annoyed by their attitudes, but I was treated with respect because I was playing. When I had enough of them and decided to spend the time playing poker with those who didn't want to play over to the side, I got hit with the occasional "accidental basketball thrown directly at the people in that area". Only rarely though. The guys who never played... not so lucky. I honestly think the few times I got hit were times where they accidentally missed the guy sitting next to me. =(

Physical exercise?! What madness is this!

I simply can not understand why people are griping about this. When has this not been a standard anyways?

That aside, PE is fun. I hope you enjoy yourself. ^_^

it's because 2/3 of americans are overweight perhaps?

seriously people complaining about PE pisses me off just play the damm game/lift the damm weights and get it over with it's good for you

unless you have some injury or disability that inhibits your ability to participate

Pretty much, and even then half the kids won't listen to the teacher and won't do anything
