Unfortuantely sean the drugs don't always work. For some people they do, for others they don't.
The usual effect if you get the right mix is to flatten out the most violent of mood spikes, but for a few people I know they hate being on them because they stop you from feeling *anything*. No bad feelings but no good feelings. Just kind of *being* Sounds awful but they'd rather risk having episodes than walking round like a zombie

I've never had clinical depression so I'm not sure what I can do to help you.

Manic depression... that basically means that one moment you're happy, the next moment you're really depressed and don't feel up to doing anything? Well, when depressed you could try the following.

Is there anything you really enjoy doing? Even just picking a game you like and getting good at it would help, do something which gives you some feeling of satisfaction and progress, whatever it is. Getting something done and feeling like you're improving in some aspect can help.

Also, try meeting new people, and keep in contact with friends. I find that sometimes the right people can really cheer you up.

However, I know how difficult that can be when you're depressed. If it gets too bad and doing the above feels too hard or forced, just chill back, do something you enjoy, for yourself, and see the bad times through until you cheer up again.

This is hardly pro advice, but its all I can think of. Also, I've heard manic depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Seek psychological expertise, medication may help, as reluctant as we all are to take it these drugs were made to battle things like this. (I doubt I'm saying anything you haven't heard a thousand times before.) If counselling isn't working may I suggest hypnotherapy sessions? My mother has a very high success rate with her clients. (Unfortunately I live in Scotland so you're a bit distant, but there are lots of good hypnotherapists out there.)
its better advice than i got from my doctors lol

If you have a real girlfriend, you shouldn't be depressed. Rather, we, who lack them, should.

Alex, your 14. You've never had a girlfriend. Please, at least try to help this guy out.
Shut up, Tom. You're 15. You have no idea either.

England? God help you. I recommend Cider.
Doesn't always work sadly, I know alot of people who try to drink away depression and just get worse from it, I've had to try cheer up alot of drunk, depressed friends before, not nice.
...that would be because alcohol is a depressant...

Anyway, I always find music the best way to cure depression (especially playing my guitar). It may not help with the mania, but hey.

I've had pretty horrible manic depression in the last 4 years. I can safely say there are a few things that help me out. I'll share them with you if you'd so like.
Now, when I get depressed I generally don't want to be around people. Do not listen to yourself. Force yourself to be around your friends, they are your shield and they will make you feel infinitely better. They are friends, and if you are down they will want to help you up.

When I get manic (I get the kind of manic where you get excessively angry at almost nothing), I often find I want to break things, listen to some F-Minus and yell shit. Also a bad idea. Find something to calm yourself down with (I drink tea, play pool and talk to my best friend). If that fails, seek your friends again, they can very often help you calm down.

Three more things I find help me out:

Meditation: Don't write it off. Sitting and simply allowing your energy to flow out will help a great deal. It helps with both manic and depressive phases. Its saved me from my depressive phases before, it can help you.

Tea: Again, don't write it off. The beverage can work wonders for you. I recommend drinking teas such as herbe matte and damiana.

Laughter: The theory behind laughter yoga is pretty sound. It really works. Just laugh at yourself, laugh at the world, laugh at you laughing. It can work wonders for depression. Its amazing really.

Hope it helps.

Don't really like this sort of thing because every person is different and simplistic solutions are never really the answer. It's always more complicated than just, "Well, find something you enjoy and do it."

So what I would suggest is that--if you don't already have a job, get one. But get one where you have to be active. Whether that's in a store or outside or whatever is your prerogative but I wouldn't recommend a job where you sit in a chair all day.

I suggest that because, first--having a job means that there is an element of structure to your life and that's a good first step. Secondly, having a job where you have to move around helps keep you from being lethargic. It's also good exercise. And while I love a brain teaser or a job that requires me to think--sometimes it's surprising how nice it is just to let your brain take a break and move on autopilot.

Doing this was very helpful for me at one point in my life. And also, looking after your health. Cut down on the booze if you're really into alcohol. And no, girlfriends don't solve problems. Compounding emotional instability with the stress of a relationship can make it much, much worse. If you already have a girlfriend--keep communication open with her.

If you can't find a job right now because of the shitty economy, maybe consider going back to school? That also can lend you some structure, connect you with resources, professors and open a door or two to something you might not have considered before. I don't know how the university system works in the UK but in America--a lot of schools have study abroad programs (although the concept of being abroad might be different in England because in America it's really exciting, as you guys are all the way across the ocean, whereas, for you--it's all just next door)

I found that making small changes like this can help you make big improvements over a period of time. Getting a job or going to school or changing health habits are all little ways to make you feel like you're in control. And I know that can be a difficult thing sometimes--when you're low, you feel like it's you against the world, when you're high--you feel like you can barely hang onto yourself. So when you start feeling like you're in control of certain elements of your life--that can give you confidence to start taking bigger steps.

This is all just things I've seen. Good luck.

I think some problems arise from people not really accepting what bipolar is. Even doctors and psychologists struggle to recognise/diagnose it and its not fully understood.
To be honest I think practically everyone has mood swings but it's the extremes and the loss of control with manic-depression that most people don't understand. That when you have a manic episode it's not rational, you don't think about whatever it is you're doing it just happens, and with the depression it can't just be snapped out of.

As long as you don't let any fuckers make you think you're less of a person for having an extreme personality and you can learn to recognise if you're heading towards a 'bad' state of mind and take whatever precautions you need to, you can live with it.

My ma recently met a guy in his 40's who controls it without drugs and hasn't had an episode for years. This guy once ran around the local park brandishing two massive knives on a manic spree. He wouldn't have hurt anyone, he just did it because he wasn't thinking. But now he seems adjusted so it can be done. It takes time but there's proof people can live with it. He's also happily married and runs his own business.

....tell me why I just wasted my time? God, nevermind. If you're just doing this sort of thing so you can get a badge, then you're just a moron. Go throw yourself off of one of England's cliffs. That'll end your "depression".

Kick yourself out of it because if you don't it will only get worse. Think why you have depression, and ask yourself if it can get any worse, you'll see how much worse it can get and it should motivate you into putting your time and effort elsewhere and before you know it, you'll be complacent.
