Congratulations! 99% of the world's cows and pigs have suddenly dropped dead, leading to an enormous increase in the cost of meat! Not to worry, the friendly food giant BLENCO PHARMACEUTICALS has perfected growing meat in vats (completely conincidentally, not related to the mass extinction in any way, we'll sue anyone who's suggesting it)

Essentially, it uses muscle-tissue cultures and stem cells, layered over scaffolds, immersed in nutrients, to produce grown "meat" on an enormous scale. So, assuming the difference between this and real meat is negligible, would you be prepared to switch over to this, rather than the horrifyingly endangered meat? Would vegetarians care to give this a try, seeing as it's never even seen anything vaguely resembling a real animal?

Eh, I could happily make the switch. No point continuing to butcher animals that are almost wiped out, when there is an alternative with no noticeable difference.

Ever since learning of the basic idea while reading the manual to Frontier (Elite II) I have been begging for this to come around.

Trust me, they manage this, I'm in the first queue at the supermarket.

Deal.
As long as it tastes, smells and cooks like bacon, I don't care what my fake-on has in it.
Unless it'll kill me, then maybe not.

If they made it to look like the exact meat e.g. steak, chicken leg etc then I probably be fine, I maybe a bit put off if it look like a perfect cube meat but I probably end up eating it anyway.

if it tastes the same as natural meat I,ll eat it it,s cheaper than regular meat (assuming one KG of beef now kasts 999,99$)

Wouldn't bother me in the least. So what if the meat has been manufactured in a lab? So one steak was built up on a petri dish compared to one built up on a cow, if they're created in the same way using the same protien strings and chemicals it's pretty much the same deal.

[sub]Poxy science, creating real meat. What was wrong with Soylent Green anyway....[/sub]

If it's guaranteed to not kill me or make me significantly ill due to prolonged exposure, then sure. A lot of processed food today is so processed past the "food" point and becomes a calorie-rich paste instead, so eating "grown" meat shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Of course, it also has to look, smell, cook, and taste like meat in order for me to actually eat it. I'm not eating a slab of white paste-steak that oozes beef broth when I stab it with a fork.

Indeed. If the chicken doesn't taste like chicken, IT'S NOT FUCKING CHICKEN!
[small]Huzzah for highly redundant statement #2 of the night[/small]

On topic: If it looks, smells and tastes like beef, then sure, I'd have no problem with this.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I'd switch over the moment it is announced.

As long as it still cooks, looks, and tastes like real meat, I couldn't give two tosses where it came from. All the meat I eat just looks like... well, lumps of meat anyway. It's not like I'm personally carving my steaks from the freshly killed carcass of an Angus.

Yeah, because there's NO possible way for something artificial to taste like chicken.

It's quite a unique flavour.

I kid you not, what´s described in the topic made my gag reflexes kick in.

As long as it tasted like the real stuff I'd go for it.

Especially if we could somehow customize the nutritional value of it...

"I'm happy to introduce the all bacon diet..."

EDIT: Fuck, I meant to do something for my 5,000th post. Shit!

Nearly wiped out? Pretty much all of the animals that are butchered for their meat are livestock. No threat of those dying out.

Though the advent of synthetic meat does give us some interesting new possibilities. Also it could very well be much better for the environment. I have been looking forward to the development of synthetic meat for quite some time now.
