Map Editor for recent FPS games?

Ever since the days of CS I cannot remember a decent FPS that had a Map Editor for the players ( I kinda stopped playing FPS games after PC and went more RTS but I think I am more or less right.). The recent titles such as MW2 and BFBC2 seem to have forgotten this tool that proved to be very valuable in extending the life span of a game ( at least on multiplayer).

It did have serious drawbacks such as making the entire community play on one map and make all the others absolute ( I remember seeing nothing but Ice world ( or zone?) games during my CS time) but ain't that the developers fault? They should learn from things like this and build better maps for their community.

This tool is absent in both MW2 and BFBC2( I am extremely sad BF2 doesn't have one ) which is sad to say the least in my opinion . Sure , I can understand they are launching DLC for money at Activision ( Thanks Bobby!-sarcasm) but it's free for BF2 ain't it? So what exactly is stopping DICE from giving us a Map Editor for us all to enjoy?

What do you guys and girls think? Will this benefit the game in the long run or damage it more with simple , small maps that would overrun the original ones ? Do you want a map editor or are you totally against it?Why?

The sad truth is that a lot of these companies only care about money. Hence the upcoming DLC map pack for MW2. If they let players make their own, they wouldn't be able to sell it. Also, it costs development time to make a map editor, although possibly not so much since they have to have their own in-house editor, right?

Personally I LOVED map editors. I only toyed with the CS one but I was all over Starcraft editor and also Myth's Fear and Loathing map/unit editor. I think that's one of the greatest things about PC gaming and developers are axing it right out.

I wish they'd bring them back, and I wish consoles would allow using the PC created maps. But it's quite a far fetched dream, it seems... *sigh*

Well, I suppose there's some games with editors on console - namely Little Big Planet and the upcoming ModNation Racers

Map editors are always a good thing. They add fun to the game, and sometimes you get a guy who's an absolute genius with the editor and you have lots of fun times.

Have you ever tried Cube 2: Sauerbraten? As a shooter, it's pretty run-of-the-mill, but it has a great level editing tool built-in to the game.

It is my mission to create a version of Sago's Castles for every FPS with a map editor.

Seriously, it was the one thing I liked about Openarena.

To my shame I never heard of it till now . Might go over and buy /rent it but to be honest a map editor is great when you have a huge community so that you can actually try different kind of maps and see what you enjoy .

If you are referring to the map editor being spectacular that might be so but without a decent size playerbase it's a waste really as the true potential of it will never be exploited to maximum.

Edit: By the way Starcraft2 will have a map editor so all is not lost . The bad part is that the creators will have the option to "auction" their map for real money which sounds nice to stimulate the players to create better maps but might not work that great.
RTS had their share of map editors over the past decade but FPS map editors seem to have evaporated completely from the main stream games.

Join the petition to get Timesplitters 4 made.

TS3 had the best MapMaker of the series, probably one of the best in video games.

Natural Selection 2. Pre-order now and you can download the map editor now (but it's still a work in progress).

Still. Viva la indies.

I don't think map editors will ever work with the way new mainstream titles are. Because all mainstream fps games are on the 360/ps3 it will be very hard to make a map using a controller.

TimeSplitters.
And I thought this was mainly a PC thread, considering the Counter Strike mention in the first post.

Nope there hasn't been any recent FPS map editors lately.

Crysis has the best FPS map editor that I have seen. Then the original's FarCry's. Far Cry 2 has one, but I haven't got the game, so I cannot tell. Just note that one needs to surpass some learning curve to achieve some results, but they can be very rewarding.

The BC2 guys said that they do plan to release a map editor eventually, but the engine they are using is really new, so they want to get it to the point where they've got it adjusted enough to be more user friendly.

It's actually a PC/Mac/Linux freeware game. You can find it here: http://sauerbraten.org/
