Mario Could Get His Own Epic Yarn Game

A sound designer at Nintendo's Hal labs said that we may see some other characters using Kirby's Epic Yarn's distinct visual style.

Many of the commenters in Susan Arendt's review of Kirby's Epic Yarn [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/8235-Review-Kirbys-Epic-Yarn] mentioned that you could easily drop any character into the game and it would still work. It looks like you guys called it and Nintendo might just take your advice. Speaking to Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, in his Iwata Asks discussion, sound designer Tadashi Ikegami said that the Epic Yarn visual style could be implemented for any number of Nintendo's characters such as Mario or Luigi.

"I think there's a lot of potential for expanding this style to other series, like making a game called Mario's Epic Yarn," Ikegami said. "That's how well I thought the foundation had been laid, so I was really happy that from among all the characters available it was Kirby who was chosen."

As soon as Ikegami saw the yarn art style, he knew that it was perfect for Kirby, but was still glad that the little cloud guy was chosen to star in such a vibrant world. But seeing the style also filled Ikegami with envy.

"I also thought, 'Aw man!' Envy as a creator that we hadn't thought of it first followed my initial joy," said Ikegami. "As a creator, I was envious, but at the same time I was incredibly thankful to be involved with the project."

Perhaps Ikegami was just nervous that he was speaking to his boss, but he did seem to repeat himself there. Buck up Ikegami-san, Kirby's Epic Yarn was a success! I'm sure you will get a few bonus yen this year.

Yeah Epic Yarn had a good visual style because it is new, it won't be if you carbon copy it over and over again.

Which Nintendo will do. For fifteen years, and then make it shiny yarn.

Is this surprising in the least? Any successfull game they make is rehashed ad nauseum. This game looks fun but I'm so sick of Nintendo I can do without most of their "exclusives".
I'll just go play Kirby's Adventure.

hmmmm can you imagine a metorid epic yarn or a donkey kong epic yarn hey maybe if every nintendo character there will be an epic yarn game where you could play as them all and each character has a unique power and it's not a super smash bros epic yarn

Tsk. Mario already had his alternative material theme. The Paper Mario games were awesome.
Quiet, you. This is what passes for innovation in Nintendo's first-party software.

Just to clarify here, are you criticizing Nintendo for something it has not actually done yet?

This game's cuteness gets me everytime. Its just so damn adorable.

Its also a great game. But the Kirby games have always been superb platformers, so it was kind of expected. But still, awesome game.

If they do it they should take out Mario's ability to jump since they took out Kirby's ability to suck things up. An eye for an eye. He could use bits of string to move around instead.

I think I'd really enjoy a Mario game done with the same visual style, but I hope this isn't signalling the start of a widespread trend.
I'd really hate to see that become strangely prophetic in hindsight.

I think they should make them as a skin for a yarn level

My only experience with Kirby on consoles was The Crystal Shards on the N64. I rather liked the 3D art in a 2D plane platformer, but it would be interesting to see what else Nintendo could do with Kirby. More Yarns are not something that I would like to see a trend of because it would probably just boil down to laziness after so many reiterations. The theme works well with Kirby because it just fits that type of style better, but in other games it would be a blatant rip-off. I can't imagine there would be much room to expand beyond (1) super cutesy, (2) 2D platforming plane, and (3) Yarn features. If they did a Mario Yarn, I would likely peg him as approaching Sonic status in a back alley of creative desolation.

To Nintendo;

Do. Something. New.
For every person like you there is a 100 more people who don't want to see Nintendo to do anything new.

Honestly I'm starting to hate the word innovation(becoming terribly overused). Innovation isn't synonymous with fun.
