Alright, so basically, I've heard a lot of people that have been thinking that many of the Mario games' storylines have been getting stale, since it's just "Bowser kidnaps Peach; go save her", while others believe that the story doesn't matter if the gameplay can more than make up for it.

What are your thoughts?

I don't know anyone who actually plays Mario (in any of his incarnations) for the stories. It hails from old days where narration wasn't very possible without having a novel of a game. So, most of their stories were told via the game manual and not the actual game.

I don't think Mario or Sonic need a story, personally. They're just good fun.

Mario is pretty much the definition of an excuse plot.

And you know what? That's completely okay. I certainly prefer that over the convoluted melodramatic mess that Sonic is. The only reason I play them is because a friend of mine keeps constantly insisting that we do.

I hate Sonic so much.

I would like it if they did a non-traditional Mario story for a change. Something in the vein of Mario RPG would be awesome :D
