Mario Kart 8: Too many boosts

This game hands out boosts like they're going out of style. So far I've played about 20 races, and about 7-8 I've gone through the whole course while only pulling boosts from the item blocks. Seriously, WTF?

There will be a clump of four players that all hit item blocks at roughly the same time. Three of us end up with boosts.

Has anyone else noticed this, or is this normal for Mario Kart nowadays?

EDIT: In fact, the whole item system seems screwy. I hardly get any shells. I wanna knock some people off course and shatter their dreams at the finish line, damn it!

Hi, I created a few days a go a User Group called "WiiU Online Multiplayer"

So for everyone interested to hook up with fellowe escapists to play some Karting, Monster Hunter or other online games which require more people, of course Smash Bros is released later this year (hopefully). If this seems like a cool thing why not join?

Item system in this Mario Kart 8 has been nothing but a bad experience for me. I've been getting nothing but the single coin item 80% of the time, sometimes even when I have all 10 coins. As a result I've gotten about 500 coins already because of it. >.>
I get it at the worst times too, and it's been annoying me way too much in all honesty, well that along with 24 of the 30 races I've done has had Toadette with terrible rubber band AI on the levels of Mario Kart 64...

Not to sound braggy or anything, but I've never gone below 6th place in any of my races so far, and I've been playing on 150CC. XD
Anyway, I've gotten things just at bad times, and I've also gotten screwed over at the ending with sudden lightning, a red shell, and then a blue shell. I can honestly say that I've only seen a Bullet Bill used once, and that was in Dolphin Shoals about 5 hours ago.
Most of the time my item slot is either a) A Coin, b) 3 mushrooms, c) a single mushroom, or d) a banana peel. I've gotten the whistle a few times, but blue shells have been so few and far in between with me having that thing that I've only ever destroyed 1 blue shell.

I like getting the coins but I find that I mostly get them when I am in first place which is troubling because if you are in first then you likely already have 10 coins because there is no one in front of you to snatch them up. When I was in 4th place or worse, I never got the coins.

The red shells seem to miss most of the time, in fact, I have better luck nailing a racer with the green shell than with the red. I am finding that the items annoy me more often than not (except the coin item) and I would rather just race and enjoy my power slides. Sometimes it feels like I spend most of a race recovering from being hit, that's not my idea of fun.

May I ask what the coins do? I didn't look up any pre-release stuff of MK8, I just jumped in and played it. I just finished playing a bit today for a bit before I head out, but I really wasn't sure what the coins did. I unlocked a jet bike because I have 50 coins, is that all they do?

They increase your max speed I think and they give you a slight boost every time you pick one up.

They are also a shiny and golden which makes you want to pick them up.

They do indeed up you max speed up to 10 coins.

It's less pronounced in 8 than in 7 though.

OT: Not had much issue so far, I get a lot of bananas and green shells but that said I tend to stay in poll position, and the rare occasions I drop back it tends to give me red shells or boomerangs or aa few greens.

I've been hit by way less blue shell bs to, and the megahorn is awesome.

The coins issue is exactly what my main complaint is with this game. I can understand it being one of the few items those in first get, but I've gotten races where after the mess of racers in the beginning is sorted out, I've only gotten coins. With green shells and bananas, I can at least defend myself somewhat. But coins? Nope, and I get 10 pretty damn fast so they're rendered pointless soon. I really wish they made it so you don't get any box-wise after you get 10. It's quite a change from my first race where I got to use the horn on a blue shell. Best first race ever.

Denying someone the satisfaction of their blue shell by using the horn in defense is the BEST. There's nothing like crushing the hopes of whoever threw it and all the other players who watch it fly past them, who think "YES! We're finally gonna catch up!".

OT: You know, I'm more peeved that the coin is even in item boxes. It's so unnecessary, given the amount of coins on each course. From what I've seen, I normally only get them when I'm in first or second, along with banana peels and the occasional green shell.

I also noticed that it is much easier to dodge red shells if you keep you're speed up with boosts and power slides. With that being said, it's also a lot harder to use them against players that aren't right in you're visible range. Not too sure how I feel about this just yet.

Linked at the right time and shown are wumpa fruits, basically just increasing the potency of everything when brought up to 10. Same system?

And in case I screwed up the time, 3:09 he picks up fruit

I haven't been having the problem too much, but the idea is that you don't get as many offensive items the closer you are to first place, it keeps the game even and give other racers a chance to catch up, in theory.

What I want to know is how to play with Miis. I can't find the spot on the character roster that lets you pick them.

The original Mario Kart on the SNES also had coins. The brought them back on Mario Kart 7 and now 8.

I've been happy with item dispersal so far, I've had one race where I got triple red shells while I was in first place, it seemed excessive but made me happy. Other than that I usually have a banana or green shell covering my ass so I tend to ignore other boxes. I just have to remember that you can't have a trailing item and have a spare in the item box like you used to. It keeps throwing me off >_<

Yeah, the item system is wonky at normal rates. After I unlocked all the characters, I switched to VS Race because I can edit what items appear. While I can't get rid of coins permanently (grrrr, it says Mushrooms only, why in blazes am I still getting coins!), limiting the item list (or switching to frantic) seems to make most of my item complaints disappear.
