I thought not texting while driving was just simple common sense. Who is so desperate to have a conversation that they'd risk crashing? Funnily enough I'm reminded of this quote:

"Who do you mean, dashboard-face?"

"Yeah, I think she prefers Miss Myers."

"Well then she probably shouldn't be checking her e-mail while she's driving ninety miles an hour."

I actualy see how this is a good idea.

as satted in the article, Mario Kart Wii is obviously not like real life but the concept is still the same.

While using a car sim would have been more realistic, the students would probably be more interested in playing Mario Kart Wii. Since they actually get enjoyment out of the game, they would understand the lesson as it detracts from their entertainment. If they used a realistic driving game then the students may simply not have tried to drive out of boredom.
