So, I've been seeing this all over the internet ever since New Super Mario Bros. Wii came out.
"Nothing groundbreaking or new; exactly the same game as old Super Mario Bros."
"It's the same thing over and over; WHY DON'T THEY CHANGE IT?"
"Nintendo's so lazy!"
Now, first of all I'd like to acknowledge those claims. They DO have a hint of truth. NSMB Wii isn't meant to be something new completely. Nintendo knows that just as well as anyone. It was meant to be a return to the old 2-d gameplay of the old Mario games with new multiplayer gameplay. They promised cooperative hop-in/hop-out gameplay, new levels and powerups, and they delivered. Super Mario Galaxy was Nintendo's way of innovating Mario and really making something unique, but you can't say NSMB Wii didn't do anything different than the old games. I personally saw a lot of new and interesting ideas in that game that I never saw in other Mario games before it, and most importantly, it was fun to play.
Yet despite the game adding plenty of new features, like offering a chance to let the game "play itself" through parts that you can't beat, people tore it apart for being the "same thing" all over again. I'm all for innovations, but I can't even think of one way to improve NSMB Wii, aside from adding online. (I actually understand what Miyamoto meant when he said it's really a "living room" experience. I can see the need for online, but not outside of playing with friends far away) In my experience, that means Nintendo had to have done SOMETHING right.
Now, seeing all the hate against NSMB Wii, I happen to wonder:
What about Mega Man?
I don't see nearly as many people complaining about the series that's seen too many sequels to count. Capcom is now working on Mega Man 10, the TENTH game in the series working on the limitations of the NES. (if I got my math right) That's 10 games, and from what I've read, the only innovation coming to 10 is the easy mode. And 9? A female robot master? Why does it seem like more people are excited for the same game the 9/10th than those that are disappointed because Capcom isn't putting more effort into the game?
It's not like I don't like the idea of revisiting a great old series in a way that will bring out some serious nostalgia. I just wonder why it seems as if there's more support for Capcom actually doing the same thing once again than there is for Nintendo bringing 2-d Mario gameplay into the current generation?
