So, I've been seeing this all over the internet ever since New Super Mario Bros. Wii came out.
"Nothing groundbreaking or new; exactly the same game as old Super Mario Bros."
"It's the same thing over and over; WHY DON'T THEY CHANGE IT?"
"Nintendo's so lazy!"

Now, first of all I'd like to acknowledge those claims. They DO have a hint of truth. NSMB Wii isn't meant to be something new completely. Nintendo knows that just as well as anyone. It was meant to be a return to the old 2-d gameplay of the old Mario games with new multiplayer gameplay. They promised cooperative hop-in/hop-out gameplay, new levels and powerups, and they delivered. Super Mario Galaxy was Nintendo's way of innovating Mario and really making something unique, but you can't say NSMB Wii didn't do anything different than the old games. I personally saw a lot of new and interesting ideas in that game that I never saw in other Mario games before it, and most importantly, it was fun to play.

Yet despite the game adding plenty of new features, like offering a chance to let the game "play itself" through parts that you can't beat, people tore it apart for being the "same thing" all over again. I'm all for innovations, but I can't even think of one way to improve NSMB Wii, aside from adding online. (I actually understand what Miyamoto meant when he said it's really a "living room" experience. I can see the need for online, but not outside of playing with friends far away) In my experience, that means Nintendo had to have done SOMETHING right.

Now, seeing all the hate against NSMB Wii, I happen to wonder:
What about Mega Man?
I don't see nearly as many people complaining about the series that's seen too many sequels to count. Capcom is now working on Mega Man 10, the TENTH game in the series working on the limitations of the NES. (if I got my math right) That's 10 games, and from what I've read, the only innovation coming to 10 is the easy mode. And 9? A female robot master? Why does it seem like more people are excited for the same game the 9/10th than those that are disappointed because Capcom isn't putting more effort into the game?

It's not like I don't like the idea of revisiting a great old series in a way that will bring out some serious nostalgia. I just wonder why it seems as if there's more support for Capcom actually doing the same thing once again than there is for Nintendo bringing 2-d Mario gameplay into the current generation?

People complain because it's a popular game. Megaman is well known, but I doubt many people outside of regular gamer circle has played it for any meaningful length of time.

Mario cops flack because it is popular and often people tout it as an amazing series, people get irritated and want to bring it down a few notches.

Its because its on the Wii and many hardcore gamers hate it for its "casual" nature. Personally I was a bit disappointed by it but I understand it does not serve as the Wii's premier Mario title (that's Galaxy's role, which it filled and then some) and is pretty good fun on its own merit. What is funny is how this argument can also be made about titles such as MW2 which is guilty of everything but innovation.

Maybe that Megaman was something completely unexpected, a Mega man game with new levels under the NES engine.

Whereas Super Mario Brothers Wii is basically Super Mario brothers 3 in 3d and playable with 3 others?

Off topic:Wait a minute...SMB3? 3D? 3 players? 3+3+3 equals 9, the game that has been released is Mega Man 9. it's a conspiracy.

Here's an analogy for you. One of the biggest complaints against rap music is that it is too repetitive, that all raps sound exactly the same. Rap aficionados, on the other hand, will tell you that raps don't all sound exactly the same. Most likely, the problem here is that the differences are subtle and require some level of background in the style to appreciate.

I'd guess that the same can be said for video games. People who don't play 2-D platformers that much and haven't cultured an appreciation for the genre are on the outside looking in; they therefore can't see the differences between titles that are so obvious to people who are more familiar with platformers.

As for why Mega Man gets a pass when Mario doesn't, I'd chalk it up to a combination of Mega Man's relative obscurity and the "hardcore" gamers feeling that Nintendo has abandoned them with its recent strategy.

AND the reciprocal of 3 is 1/3. Multiply that by the number of "New" Super Mario Bros. games, and that's 2/3. AKA, 0.666(666666666666667) ZOMG. :O

Basically, that's what it is. Since when was that a bad thing, though? Last time I checked, gamers love Super Mario Bros. NSMB Wii offers a lot of new monsters, concepts, and more. They add in features that really make the game feel more complete than previous Super Mario Bros games. And of course, there's multiplayer, which in my honest opinion, is more of something for the lulz than anything else. 2 player is fun and doable. 3 is a bit crazy. 4 is insane. But the point is, it's co-op; something we've been asking for for years and now we have it. It's not great for perfectionist players who want to make it through with as few deaths as possible and be SO PROH. It's for the fun of it, and I can say from experience... that's what it is.

And on Megaman, it may be that it's just the fanbase coming up, I guess. Xbox/PS players can get on Nintendo's back about NSMB but the only people who care about Megaman are likely the people who will play it.
