Have you ever bought a game purely on the marketing hype that surrounded it?
So you just had to check it out for yourself, rather than it being a game you would normally buy.....

No I would never ever go for something purely on the marketing. I may get some info on it if it looks interesting enough. But for some reason everything that is hyped gives me a bit of the chills.

I bought Final Fantasy X-2 because of the hype. Felt a bit played after realizing how bad it was.

Well I had no intention on buying Starcraft II when it came out, but this countless barrage of ads makes me want to buy it so they would just shut up.

That, and it looks like a good game. Marketing does at least get my interest, doesn't make up my mind about a game though.

Short answer: No, I don't buy games purely based on marketing. I'm not going to go out and spend my money just because some ad told me to.

However, I am susceptible to marketing techniques to a degree. For example, I considered buying Starcraft 2 just because of how much people seem to like it (even though I can't stand RTS games). So yes, if the ad made it look like a fun game then I would definitely check it out; though probably not buy based purely on that.

Starcraft II was what got me thinking about this. I haven't played an RTS game since the original Command & Conquer back in (I think) 1996, but the hype around Starcraft is making me think about buying it.

Never. If anything, marketing at times leads me to not buy games. I turned down Saints Row 2 at least 3 times because of how boring the cover looked, despite people whose opinions I trust telling me it was good.

Same here. I was considering getting Starcraft, but I don't think my laptop can take it. It barely can take TF2. Starcraft's ads have come the closest to actually convincing me to buy the game, so for that, I guess Blizzard deserves a cookie or something.
