So I've decided to take up a martial art, there's a lot of them out there but I'm thinking of Kickboxing. I was wondering does anyone out there do any martial arts and do they have any tips/stories to share?

Do you simply want to learn to defend yourself efficiently, or just have a great workout?

I took JKD for a couple of years, it's a very aggressive form of martial arts, but relies on making your opponent move first, and then counter-acting (a lot of the time).

JKD (Jeet Kun Do - sp?) is the martial art that Bruce Lee created. Its emphasis lies within being practical enough for street fighting, but also in being structured enough that you have a lot of self-discipline.

There are books Lee himself published regarding this martial art, and there are a lot of experts who have manuals on it as well.

Problem is JKD trainers are tough to find in some places, so good luck if you choose to go this route.

actually no JKD is NOT about that. yes the name means "way of the intercepting fist" HOWEVER most of the stuff in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do was taken out because it doesn't work in a real situation

JKD was about beating ppl fast and effectively and removing anything that didn't work against a resisting opponent

if you want really JKD go here http://www.straightblastgym.com

as for kickboxing, if you want good kickboxing take Muay Thai

other than that try brazillian jiu jitsu, however find out the lineage of the person teaching it, ie who they learned it from back to the Gracies

Take Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.

It's practical, it works, and it will get you into shape. I've been doing it about a year now and it's great stuff. I actually feel like I'm learning how to defend myself well, and it's great fun.

If I were coordinated enough, I would probably try Eskrima.

I took karate for a very long time. I actually advise against it because it puts an emphasis on basic strikes (at least where I learned it). It kind of seems like it is the style that every other style trains to fight. "If he throws a straight punch like people in karate do, use his momentum to set him on fire with your chi and throw him into a wall."

i took Aikido for a while and thats good for strictly self defense. but something that is the best for real world fights is Gracie Jiu Jitsu. think about it....all fights end on the ground anyway.

I do Tae Kwon Do and the occasional kickboxing class at my dojo. It's very worthwhile, but very demanding.

I took Jeet Kune Do for several years a few years back, and have lately started to take it up again.

As someone stated before me, its pretty much about taking out aggressors quickly and effectively, and thus doesn't look so fancy. I recomend you give it a try if you manage to find a club.

This^

It is a very efficient fighting style since most fights end up on the ground. You can subdue your opponent without sending them to the ER.

its not the art its the person
How is that supposed to help him find a suitable practice? Would you care to elaborate and come to a helpful conclusion?

I'd say TaeKwonDo, simply because it's the one I've experienced and it's great, but I imagine that- for self defence- a mix is best.
