Title says it all, the first Phase Four movie for the MCU will be Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (most likely being titled "Volume 3"). This was something we all likely saw coming given the Guardian's braking out as a team that no one knew to being a smash hit that got a sequel prepared in the works before the movie even came out.

What is interesting is that Phase Four will be, in producer Kevin Feige's own words, "Distinctly Different" from what he refers to as the Saga that is the first three phases. Whatever this means, it seems Disney and Marvel are aware of the fact the superhero craze has its limits and are already making plans to deal with the fact that superheroes can be written into any genre (and technically already where before what we today consider superheroes to be where created) and is acting accordingly.

God damn Marvel, Volume 2 isn't even out yet.

I know you like canon building, but slow the hell down.

I'm confused. What phase are they on right now?
Civil War will mark the start of Phase Three, with Ant Man being the end of Phase Two. The television series aren't considered part of the phases since that would make things far too hard to synchronize into decent box sets.

II hope to god Joss Whedon will stay away from Thanos as humanely possible.
Joss is done with Marvel. He quite after Age of Ultron, and the way he did it assures he won't be back. On the bright side, the two brothers who directed Winter Soldier as well as Civil War are set to direct both Infinity Wars movies.

That'd be the Russo Brothers. They've got a really good handle on the characters and chemistry so I think they're up for it. Especially if the Civil War reviews are anything to go by, they can handle the huge ensemble.

What happened between Whedon and Marvel?
He burned out. Marvel wanted his opinion on pretty much everything they did, but he felt like they didn't actually use his opinions as often as they should. So he felt like he was sinking a massive amount of time into the Universe, with very little to show for it. And he felt like the only way out was to completely break free, otherwise he'd be sucked back in and never escape.

Seems fair enough to me.

Marvel told him he couldn't make Age of Ultron 210 minutes long like he'd originally wanted (or three and a half house, also known as an hour too many) and forcing him to put the 30 second "Thor in the water hole" scene that people complain way to much about given how little presence in the film it actually had.

Or to put it simply, his original movie idea way far too long and he forgot this was a Marvel movie.

I think you're mixing him up with his studio. He and his brother had collectively been asked too much, but the interference in Age of Ultron's production was what broke the camel's back for him.

I'm just going by what I read. He said he was burning out, he never had time for his own things, they'd ask him for input on Marvel things he wasn't directly in control of and ignore him. He even said he was already sure he was quitting really early in the process of Age of Ultron, and that executive meddling just made it easier for him.

Can we please wait until we've got Guardians 2 at least CLOSE to finished? Or maybe, if I'm being a completely crazy individual, until after people have seen it?

So if the current phase ends with the Infinity War, what would be the next big event to stretch through multiple phases, Secret Wars, The Illuminati, Incursions, the Builders? They could do Siege or Fear Itself but both those events would end entirely too quickly. And WWH would last through one set of films tops. Though seeing Asgard get KOed by the Sentry would be crazy fun on the big screen, especially if the Greek pantheon was introduced to put in his damage path.

God damn it Marvel. Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the few films of yours I like. Now you've got me hoping that GotG 2 bombs so you can learn some god damn humility.

...okay, maybe that's a bit harsh. But still...

Also, minor point, does GotG even count as a superhero movie? I'd sooner lump it more in the category of sci-fi or sci-fa. After all, a group of scruffy outlaws sticking it to the man while having adventures in space has been done before (Blake's 7, Farscape, Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, etc.), and I wouldn't call any of them superheroes.

Despite what people seem to believe, superheroes have long stopped being a genre. Outside of someone wearing a suit and doing a bit of vigilantism there's nothing that connects Spiderman, The Dark Knight, Iron Man or Days of Future Past outside of the formate of the source material.

I would love seige now that they got spider-man back, and since Gunn wants to keep gaurdians away from the main movies I always hoped for an annihilation arc for them but apparently Annihilus is under fox right now along with the Fantastic Four stuff.

I don't know why some of you are so bothered, I mean they announced Infinity War, Parts I and II, before Age of Ultron came out.

I...honestly didn't know that. I feel more of a sad puppy now. :(

Speaking personally though, the personal difference for me is that I don't care about the Avengers, while I at least partially care about Guardians of the Galaxy, so am therefore more likely to be aggravated. Planning sequels this far in advance doesn't exactly fill me with confidence in regards to quality control.
