Going to go with the ultimate Mary sue. The one that puts all others to shame (yes, even Bella swan)

Not even sure if it counts due to how blatantly obvious it is, but I figured I would post it nontheless.....

Enjoy!

Just read chapter 1.

You win.

Not sure if it counts though, as it's fan fiction.

You know, I'm going to be controversial here and say Marty McFly. I've only watched the first film - and don't get me wrong, I really liked it - but just stop and think about it for a second. He doesn't have a single character flaw.
Can't remember if it was in the first, but in the 2nd and 3rd, he's established to have a pretty big one. Call Marty a "chicken" and he'll do anything to prove he's not. It's established this is one of the reason his future self is messed up, because quite a few people know this and use it against him.

Also, I agree that The Doctor is a Gary Stu, River is a Mary Sue and a lot of the show is pretty much fanfiction. That being said, I enjoy the hell out of it.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but its incredibly popular, and she's the most hilariously blatant Mary sue ever. So let's just go with it.....for the sake of humour :D

I can't stop reading it... it just keeps going...

It's like the Titanic just hit the iceberg head on and put on full speed towards Greenland.

See if you can complete the great internet pilgrimage and make it to the end.

Disclaimer: I do not take any responsibility for a severe drop in IQ that may be caused by reading it.

Ash fucking Ketchum and his team. They are incapable of losing to opponents who are massively overpowered against them. Swampert and Arcanine were clobbering Ash's Swellow and Corpish, only for Swellow and Corphish to turn around and knock Swampy and Arcanine out in one hit. What a load of bullshit. I wish Ash would fall into a trash compactor.

Funnily enough, if the Titanic did that, it would have had a better chance of surviving than if it had tried to turn.

I don't get it. That Pikachu that should be level 100 by now lost to a water-type Panpour at the first gym in the newest season.
It's not a Mary Sue in every sense of the term, but Ash and Pikachu will ALWAYS overcome in the end, and everyone knows it. Any obstacle or difficulty they face is token - put up simply to try and poorly conceal the Mary Sue.

The writers will never run him into a wall he simply cannot overcome, or at least one he can't oversome by a timely evolve or heretofore unknown power.
Didn't he lose when he got to the pokemon league? Also, I'll just leave this here...

OT: Artemis Fowl from... Artemis Fowl, the kid is just unbeatable (still enjoyed the book back in the day though)

he's too scared of rejection to really try at following his dreams...

then theres the whole "don't call me chicken" thing which...kind of comes from nowhere

anyway I think he's too normal to be considered a mary stu....I think it has to be more (and painfully) obvious
Doesn't really come from nowhere. If you watch the first one again he's pretty confrontational and showboaty. They only made it a big deal in the other two.

... I'm throwing Light Yagami out there. He just... did he fail? Up until the end of the show, did he fail at all? Cuz, just... yeah. Irritates me the nonsense he got away with.

Yugi Moto from Yu-Gi-Oh

I mean seriously, he has just the right card for ANY occasion?!? His Dark Magician doesn't get worse but BETTER when the Time Wizard's effect takes place?

Definitely a Gary Stu. Sorry Yug.
I was under the impression Pharoah cheated and either stacked the deck and was good at pretending to shuffle, or magically transmuted cards.

The term Mary Sue means to many things to too many people and thus is meaningless.
This.

For example, I would say that identifying POPULAR Mary Sues, like Bella Swan, is an inherent contradiction.

While she fits the most simplified definition in that she is an overtly perfect heroine, she doesn't fit the original PURPOSE of the Mary Sue tag in fanfiction communities, that was a way to warn amateour writers that they are going off on a tangent with blatant self-insertions that's petty wish fulfillments would bore everyone else.

That obviously doesn't apply to Twilight, or to any of the franchises listed above, since they already have huge fanbases that don't consider them too boring.

Most of those are not really writer avatars, but audience avatars, that is a completely different thing. If you start bludgeoning general escapist characters with the term "Mary Sue" just for being too perfect, you are no longer complaining about bad writing, just forcing your random literary theories, about how protagnists should act, on others.

Aigis from Persona 3. I really don't understand why she's such a popular character with the fan base, although I guess a little pandering goes a long way.

Every goddam character you play in video games... well almost everybody. Bioware being the worst offender.
You are the effing messiah in a world filled with sycophants that can't function with out your greatness. Those who don't become villains

Yeah, and Ash is still ten. Even though if you count every episode as one day, not even taking into account stated times and dates in the show, he should be twelve. He has somehow spent more time being ten than is theoretically possible, even within the confines of the show.
Hell, even the other characters have aged. Misty is two years older, so is Gary. Brock seems to be getting younger, so that's even weirder.
Pikachu is the least perplexing part of the whole show.
