I am thoroughly outraged with the Dragon Age: Origins DLC and the way it will cost ridiculous amounts of hard earned cash to play the product they intend for us. I refuse to buy it as a result. However, I absolutely adored Mass Effect and really want the sequel. However, their insistance of DLC on the way is making me uncertain. Will it be the same. Will i end up spending £100 just playing the game they want me to play?
What do you guys feel about the DLC issue? Do you like? Do you hate? Or are you a rich millionaire who doesn't mind shelling out the dough for more content?

Well. I'm a rich bastard, so I'm usually the guy that goes "DLC? Score!", no matter what the circumstance.

However. Day 1 DLC. Never understood that. I mean, DA:O had the whole excuse with the second hand thing, but others do it shamelessly.

I didn't buy DA:O but releasing day 1 DLC is really lame IMO. I also heard that the only way to have a storage chest for your items was to buy DLC as well? That is fucked up.

I like DLC as it extends the length of a game, but only if it is extra content that was not excluded from the game in order to make a quick buck. Mass Effect 2 will probably have the same sort of DLC, I mean this is EA we're talking about.

Despite the second pack being bad, i though the original had it right. Once a year or something. Or an expansion like Shivering Isles. But Warden's Keep, Stone Prisoner, Awakening, Return to Ostagar. When does it end?

I dont mind shelling out for DLC of a decent standard. It's developed separately, after the main game. I dont mind paying dev's for their extra work. It is kinda their job, after all.

Day 1 DLC is just pure ass. If you're releasing something alongside a game, but for an extra charge, thats wrong. It should be in the fucking game to begin with.

You realize that the DLC for Dragon age was developed AFTER the game was finished right?
It just made it out in time to ship with the game.

Exactly. The process of printing and shipping games takes a long time and just because the DLC was released the same day that the game was does not mean that it was competed at the same time. Digital distribution is a much faster process so, chances are, the DLC was in fact completed after the full game and happened to be ready for release at the same time.

I think the new expansion thats coming out is going to be well worth my money.

The day 1 DLC however, acutaly wasnt too bad. Think of it this way. You buy the game new, you get 1 DLC for free and that DLC gives you an awesome partner. The other DLC you get for getting the super special PC version, which give you a quest, and a storage crate I will never use (i know, I have it). If you dont buy th game new, it costs about 15 bucks for the 1 DLC (which is fine, since alot of people probably bought the game new). As for the 2nd DLC, i think its annoying, but it was about half the 1st DLC's price, with half the fun and length.

As for the other item DLCs, you could have gotten them for free too.

In my opinion, I think day 1 DLC is fine, as long as I shouldnt have to pay for most of it (one thing I can see, like with DA:O). If Mass Effect does this, i better get 80% of it for free, for buying like a limited edition, or just for buying/reserving it).

The game has 100+ hours of content. Its completely finished. DLC is optional, and it was offered as free premium content to the people who bought the game new rather than used.

Wardens keep was made after the game had been made.

Ostagar was delayed, and Awakening is a full fledged expansion (like Shivering isles)

And as said Stone Prisoner was FREE to those who bought the game new. The only DLC they really had is Warden's Keep!

It's a bit off-putting to hear a developer talking about DLC for a game that has yet to be released. Even if it isn't actually the case, it's hard to shake the feeling that it was originally meant to be included on the disc and later pulled so they can tweak it a bit and then sell it to you later. I guess that's mostly because I fear a world where all games are like what they did with The Sims 3: give you less content than they used to and then nickel and dime you for the rest. Yes, I know games cost a lot more to make than they used to, but the price of has only really changed (outside of a few exceptions) with this console generation, where the price went up a whole 10 dollars. The 50 bucks I spent on an NES game as a kid was worth a whole lot more in terms of the value of the dollar and the profits they made than the 60 bucks I spend on a PS3 or 360 game today. Hopefully digital distribution takes off on the consoles like it has on the PC, since cutting the huge expense of pressing, packaging and then shipping discs first to a distributor, and then from the distributor to the store would make the publishers more money meaning they wouldn't necessarily have to resort to my nightmare, as much at least.

That doesn't justify charging $23 for a fuck party member.
You mean the party member that comes free with every new copy?
The one that actually costs 15$?

I usually hate DLC, but it worked well for fallout 3. I didn't buy any dlc for mass effect one, so I probably won't buy any for ME2.

Damn DLC to hell.

I don't want Condrad Verner telling me his family's been kidnapped by Batarians and I can only rescue them if I download some fucking DLC.

For some games is justifiable. Such as with Fallout 3, but shit like costume packs in SFIV? Fuck off.
Nah, I would rather get those DLC all packaged in one expansion pack which would likely be cheaper. Not to mention operation Anchorage, Mothership Zeta is the same price as Broken Steel and Point Lookout.

On a different point I would rather not deal with Microsoft points, why the frak do I have to buy 1k points when I want something for 800 points? Why do I have to buy points at all, why can't I just get a dollar amount?

Actually, the above says the party member is free. In my opinion though a game isn't complete until the creators have finished making content for it.
