Got a copy of ME2 recently but haven't played yet due to never having played the first. Does it make a huge difference if you've never played the original, by that I mean does it mess up the story?

Not really. Some of the major choices I think you can decide after the tutorial level. If you pay an extra $7 (I think) you can get an interactive comic that lets you make the major decisions. Other than that, you can play the whole thing without needing much backstory.

Got the PS3 version like I did?

If so, there's an intro comic thing that gives you a super fast summary of the first game and asks you to make all the major decisions that your character would have made in the first one. It does a pretty good job, all things considered.

Although, after beating Mass Effect 2 on PS3, I went and got ME1 on Steam just to see what I was missing. I liked ME2 better overall, but it was nice actually getting to see the story unfold.

So, to sum up - ME2 is totally playable without ME1, but ME1 does add something. However, it isn't necessary to play ME1 first. At least it wasn't for me.

Did you purchase the game for Xbox or Ps3?

If you purchased it for Ps3, you get an interactive backstory comic when you enter in your cerberus code in the box.

If you obtained it for anything else, no, the story wasn't massisively plotty. This can pretty much sum it up right. Unless, you want to play it for your self.

There's a few things that link between the two but not much.

Yes. Yes it does. I tried playing ME2 without transfering data, just to see what its like. I swear, the default is all the terrible decisions. Or atleast the opposite of all mine. If you can (not a PS3 gamer that is) play 1 first.

If you want to customize ME1 choices without playing it and you have it on PC, by the way, you can download a save from masseffectsaves.com

I never played the first one, and thoroughly enjoyed the second.

It was making the transition towards playing the first ME that was an issue. Different tech, interface, squad commands, enemy tactics, combat, etc. It was painful. ME2 is a bit more simplified.

No. I played and enjoyed the second without playing the first.

Conveniently most of the default choices were the ones I would have picked anyway. Renegade Shep Forever.
