Mass Effect 3 character? (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)

So by now everybody knows that you might sacrifice Commander Shepard at the end of ME2. What do you suppose that means for the third installment? If you do lose Shepard, who will replace him?

I've seen some speculation that, since Joker fills in for Shepard in the final cutscene if he died, you would control Joker in the next game. But that doesn't sound quite right; I mean, the whole brittle-bone-disease thing is pretty central to that character, and I don't think anyone in their right mind would send a guy with breadstick femurs into a pitched battle.

Than again, I don't think any self-respecting dev team would repeat the same "back from the dead" frankenstein experience after having used it to such dramatic effect here.

Maybe we'll find out Shepard has a long-lost sibling... or a clone. With a goatee. Who's evil.

EDIT: I've changed the title to something more ambiguous. I've added a spoiler warning. A helpful mod put the "spoiler" behind a spoiler screen. But seriously, if anything is being spoiled here for you in this thread, it's because you've isolated yourself from knowing anything about Mass Effect 2 before playing it, yet paradoxically are here reading about the next game which exists only as a hypothetical. I've done all I can.

I think they said that if your Shepard dies, you just roll a new Shepard for ME3.

EDIT: hehe, rolling a Shepard. Sounds drug-related.

C'mon. It's common knowledge that Shepard and your crew members can die in the end.

For me, it won't be a problem. That suicide mission was my *****.

Also, I think that most players will restart the game, if they lost Shepard.

I'm promoting you to Public Speaker of the Obvious House.

It would be a dick move to kill Sheppy off at the end, since you could use him for the past two games. Also, self sacrifice Bioware, really? REALLY? Find a better way to start ending your games.

Also, thanks for spoiling it.

No it isn't. I didn't know.

There's another spoiler, I didn't know about the crew either. You guys are just tearing this game apart for me =/

This made me LOL and now I have to use it in real life.

OT: I don't really see any appeal in taking the option to kill off the character if they are making another game. This couldn't be an option they save to the very end?

Don't you think that a suicide mission could be a little...I don't know...suicidal?

Or maybe that's just me.

Awww, Sheppy sounds so cute. I'm going to call him like that now.

Hey, you clicked on the post. The first trailer they released for the game stated Shepard was dead. Don't blame us for your willful ignorance of every other piece of marketing the game has done over the past year.

I've placed a spoiler warning in the thread title to keep the dreadfully uninformed from accidentally joining in a discussion with those in the know.

Now run along.

I didn't know about that either. *facepalm*

Even if I did, most films/games have their main characters survive things described as suicide missions.

This is the reason I made the ME2 discussion thread, it stops things like the spoiler of the game for others, and you can ask questions. I don't see how you missed it, it's been on the first page all day

Sadly, probably not. I kind of... um... Killed Wrex on Virmire in ME 1. He was being a dick, I had to. I don't think they'd hang the third game on a character that may not have even been present in the second.

I like your way of thinking though.

Son? Wha...have I missed something?

You don't have a son. Birth control has advanced in 2185.

Don't worry, to kill Shepard at the end you really have to not give a fuck about the game.

Keeping all squadmates alive - now that requires some effort.

I didn't miss it. This thread isn't a discussion about Mass Effect 2; rather, it is speculation about the continuation of the series. Thus, it didn't belong.

I've decided to forgo sleep in favor of wondering about these things.

I am sure in OXM I think it was. It says something like if your character dies at the end of mass effect two then you will play mass effect 3 as a Sheppard. Just not your Sheppard.

I feel as if it could have been allowed in as it pertains to discussion after the events of ME2
