If I don't get Tali in number three I will cry. All night. Forever. Also I hope Garrus is there, but he's expendable.
I think your squad will depend heavily on your final decision in the game. I'm certain that there are a few members who would not be too willing to stand behind you handing over such a facility to the Illusive Man.
Not to mention that this act would further distance you from the Citadel, the council and the rest of civilized space.

They've got a couple years to work it all out, but it's safe to say that with the sheer number of different choices and potential character deaths, Bioware will have a heck of a time on 3.
My guess is that they'll bring back a few, maybe 2 or 3 additional characters from ME1, a few more from ME2 (4-ish), and throw in around 6-7 new characters. They'll probably keep the total squad limit the same as ME2, but they'll have to have enough for the poor souls who killed both Wrex in 1 and their whole team in 2. Unfortunately, the easiest thing they could do would be to get rid of almost all old characters and bring in a whole new crew. This, however, would negate the ending of ME2, what with all the hyped bloodbath, and would also be uncharacteristically lazy for Bioware.
In terms of what characters I think/hope they bring back, I'm almost certain Legion is returning because he came in late for ME2 and is too interesting a character to lose. I'd bet that Ashley/Kaiden, Garrus, and Tali will be back as squadmates, but not Liara or Wrex. Zaeed is expendable, as is Sanera (Justicar shit), Thane (disease), and Jack (instability). Though I'd like to see Mordin and Grunt return, I wouldn't be too sure. Miranda and Jacob have the highest chance of making it from 2 to 3.
I remember reading somewhere that Bioware had people scouring forums, blogs, and review during ME2 development to fix complaints and fufil fan desires. I'd hazard that they are either in or entering the stage in planning ME3 for choosing squadmates, and that a large factor will be fan response. So, Bioware, if you're reading this, MY DREAM TEAM IS GARRUS, TALI, MORDIN, LEGION, WREX, AND KAISHLY PLUS SOME NEW RAD DUDES KTHNXBAI.

I am a Vanguard so my party is probably gonna be Tali (Damn Bioware to hell if she isn't in the third game) and whoever the combat/biotic party member is (Better be Wrex or another Krogan...).
I like to have Tali around because she amongst my favorite characters who also happen to complement my class and the combat/biotic because they usually are pretty cool and again they work well with my class.
If the combat/biotic is lame then probably Garrus or Legion.

But I was thinking that how the second game would go is that any surviving members from the second game would be told by Shepard to "form their own teams" because "12 people aren't going to do that much against the reapers and you've been forged into experienced and skilled people by fighting The Collectors".

No matter what they decide, I think should have some way bigger fights that allow to take all of your squad members into the mission and form them into teams to do objectives, like at the end of ME2. It would also make it harder to keep them all alive, which would make the choice aspect of the game become even more important.
Any way my squad would be (in a random order):
-Legion (Awesome)
-Liara
-Miranda
-Tali
-Zaeed
-Cart- I mean Kaidan (I mean, let him use two pistols and he's Carth with the Force!)
-Mordin (not for combat, just on the ship for entertainment)

I am hoping we get to have an Asari matriarch on the team, another (male) quarian, and Saren's half-brother Dave. I also want all the old squad members. And Captain Anderson, who's only weapon are his bare fists. And lets have a moral dilemma where we can either order a Turian drink or let Udina fall prey to a Thresher Maw (complete with a cutscene of the devouring). That jerk will die every single time.
The team will consist of 100 people who will all have their own dialogue and loyalty and recruitment missions.

Seeing how potentially any squadmember in ME2 could die, I'm not sure how they're going to work it. Supposedly one of the reasons Wrex/Kaiden/Ashley weren't companions is because it was possible not to have each of them survive ME1, so they all only got cameo, easy to do rolls. Not sure if there's any truth to it of course, but if this is the case, ME3 might have difficulties.
I want to see Jack, Legion, Mordin, Morrinda, Tali, Garrus and Liara still there. Samara/Morinth would be cool too, but I was growing a little tired of Samara near the end, and Morinth - well, I'm not sure I could see her hanging around if you aren't going to put out (which ends it anyways obviously). Not really fussed about the others - Jacob especially just annoyed me during the game.
I also really want to see Urz in there as well, even if he can't be a proper companion.

It's a pretty solid bet that Ashley and Liara will be squadmates. I also figure Wrex/Wreav will be back on the table also. as for the ME2 characters, I can see how they can be used as squadmates, but only Tali & Legion appear to be essential storyline wise. it'll be interesting to see how Bioware handles it if both those characters died in the suicide mission.

1. Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams - I like Ashley. Yeah she was racist, however she DID compliment Tali during elevator rides, so I think that could easily be remedied in ME3 when/if they expand on her.
2. Captain David Anderson - Come on, Capt. Anderson was awesome. Who wouldn't want him on the team and out of the office? OK, sure, he even says he's too old for this crap, but so what. I can dream...
3. Doctor Liara T'Soni - Liara will be back on the team I'm pretty sure. She was my favorite character in ME1 so at least I hope she will be. My bet is she'll figure out the Illusive Man is the Shadow Broker and hook up with you to find him
4. Urdnot Wrex - Wrex was awesome. I loved all the things he used to say. Grunt is a hollow shell compared to Wrex IMO, couldn't stand him. Wrex will probably make an appearance with the Krogan Army, but I doubt you will be able to recruit him, so sad.
5. Tali'Zorah vas Normandy - To be honest I think Tali will return to her fleet and Garrus will go somewhere else in ME3 and be replaced with your ME1 love interest. I just don't see them being used a 3rd time over other possible characters.
6. Garrus Vakarian - "See Above"
7. Mordin Solus - He cracked me up and his back story was one of the best IMO. I really hope he returns in ME3. Not much to say that hasn't been said already.
8. Thane Krios - This guy, to me, was one of the best characters in either game. I don't care if his flashbacks were overly dramatic, they were awesome. I hope he's in the next game and not dead.
9. Legion - He was intriguing. Personally I feel he'll return to the Geth to prepare to go to war against the reapers though.
10. Zaeed Massani- No one liked Zaeed? Man, talking to him was a trip. His war stories were great. I hope he plays a bigger part in ME3.
Jack/Subject Zero, Miranda Lawson, Urdnot Grunt, Jacob Taylor, Samara/Morinth and Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko... I didn't like any of them. I don't care what happens to them.

Just by how many teammates don't make it into the sequals really makes you wonder who will make it all the way through.... based on your decisions some characters make it in mass effect 2... Garrus and Tali are the only ones that had no way of death in ME1.... makes you wonder how the no previous file new game will go(might get to play as an alien). Anywho I hope that make it to the 3rd game as companions.ma55ter_fett said:
