Wow, nice to see the "OMG it isn't RPG enough I'm not going to buy it but I'm going make sure EVERYBODY knows how bad it is" crowd is already out.
Look, Mass Effect 1 was a great game in many ways, but the gameplay, inventory and levelling systems were simply bad. No, having decent combat mechanics does not somehow make a game any less of an RPG. ME2's inventory had far more choice than the first, which consisted of 'choose gun with biggest numbers, sell rest'. In ME2, using shotguns as an example, you could have the 'single blast blow face off' Claymore, the rapid fire Scimitar for tactical fighting or a choice of 3 happy mediums. No such choice in 1. And a game in which you have to wait a dozen levels before you can shoot a gun straight is JUST NOT FUN.
Mass Effect has never pretended to be an old school RPG. Go and play Dragon Age or KOTOR if you want that. If you want an epic blend of fast, fun (you know that thing) combat with a story involving you Role Play through a ridiculously dramatic series of events, then load up Mass Effect.
Ok, now that is out of my system...
This looks like a pretty cool screen, blending the best parts of MEs 1 and 2. Keeping the feel of 2 in that each upgrade will feel tangible rather than "Ooh yeah 2% radius increase SCORE", though I am disappointed they kept the ammo system. I hope they at least return weapon mods to the field.
Grenades back, excellent (I loved the flash/inferno grenades from the DLC but they were pretty clunky to use), and the option to give Shepard team-mate boosting powers also makes a lot of sense.
But we already know they nailed good gameplay with ME2, and slipped slightly with the story. Let's hope they can bring it back to ME1 levels of epicness (and relevance... I couldn't help feeling most of ME2 was fluff leading to a mission Cerberus could have sent anyone to do...) and make the best game ever!
