Yes, I know, yet another mass effect thread... but the game deserves every single thread made for it god damn it.

Anyway, moving onto the point, is it just me, or would you LOVE to see a Mass Effect MMORPG? I know, I know, lots of people hate them, Yahtzee hates them (I think) but I was just thinking about this all day and couldn't get it out of my head.

I just beat Mass Effect 2, and I was pissed as hell... because it ended. I know that it's a trilogy and all, but what if Bioware made a MMORPG of it a few years after the trilogy ended? It has an awesome premise for it, and near limitless potential. Just like the Star Wars universe, expanding on it could be so easy considering the vast unexplored planets and whatnot...

It would be a fresh change from the usual Tolkien based fantasy, and focus on a good Sci-fi setting that hasn't been seen in years. (I thought Star Wars Galaxies kinda sucked... just me)

So that's that. Just thought that perhaps a Mass Effect online along those lines would kick the shit out of any other MMO I have ever played before...

Well I hope they do pull through with Star Wars: The Old Republic. It's still a shame (or a stroke of luck for some) that a franchise with such excellent potential was left unexplored. (Or those same some may think, unexploited!)

What would you think about it?

Very unlikely

Mass Effect is all about the story, and as we've seen with pretty much every MMO, the story has to take the trunk (not just the back seat) over grinding your brain into a pool of gelatinous blood.

It could work despite what people say. It could kinda be like guild wars. instanced zones. that would also help its combat to stay the same.

If it is like Guild Wars then it would cease to be an MMO, and just be an online cooperative game. To keep with the gameplay of the Mass Effect games it would have to be a MMOFPS, which to date have all failed, not to say that a well made one couldn't be commercially successful, but making an MMO in this current environment with such an industry giant taking up so much attention, I would find that to be quite difficult, unless a publishing company decides to drop an enormous investment to bring one off the ground.

And having played MMOs myself I would agree with the statement that story takes a serious backseat (or trunk space) to gameplay and grinding. There is no such thing as the kind of narration, storyline, and character development in MMOs that exists in your standard single-player RPG.

It depends entirely on how BioWare does with The Old Republic. If they can manage to pull of a good story-driven MMO with that, I can easily see a Mass Effect MMO in the future. We shall see.
